Pacific Opera Theatre is the resident student opera ensemble at the University of the Pacific. The program boasts a long history of successfully training singer-actors for the professional arena.

MEET THE ARTISTIC AND PRODUCTION STAFF

James Haffner (stage director/producer), professor of opera at the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, is a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing and an Artist’s Diploma in opera stage directing. He is also a certified teacher of the Michael Chekhov acting technique and an artistic associate with the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium.

James’s production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola took first place in the 2001 National Opera Association Production Competition and was a finalist both at the regional and national levels in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). La Cenerentola holds the distinction of being the first opera to be invited to perform in the KCACTF national festival. His work has been further recognized by the KCACTF with encore productions of his reworking of Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill and the West Coast premiere of Glen Roven’s musical Heart’s Desire. The National Opera Association has also recognized his productions of Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. His additional significant credits include the German premiere of Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day; Das Mahagonny Songspiel, which was presented as part of the premiere Brecht Fest at the Berliner Ensemble; and Dido and Aeneas with the first annual Museumsinsel Fest, Berlin.

James has served as producing artistic director of the Stockton Opera Association since 2007 and has worked with both the Bay View and Bear Valley Music Festivals. He is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab–West and has served as an adjudicator for the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition (Opera San Jose). A Fulbright Scholar, he has taught at the Technische Universität, Berlin, as well as the University of Kentucky–Lexington, Miami University (Ohio), Webster University, and California State University–Fullerton.

At the Conservatory of Music, James teaches Opera Theatre Workshop (beginning and advanced sections), Introduction to Lyric Diction, Opera Literature, and Opera Production. He also produces and directs the Pacific Opera Theatre productions.

Eric Dudley (music director/conductor) leads a multifaceted career as a conductor, composer, vocalist, and pianist immersed in the creation of music both past and present. An original member of the Grammy Award–winning vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, Eric toured worldwide with the group for over twelve years and appears on numerous acclaimed recordings. He came to the Bay Area in 2016 as interim music director of the orchestra program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is currently the artistic

director of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the largest and most longstanding ensemble dedicated to the performance of new music on the West Coast.

While living in New York, Eric performed with organizations as diverse as the Ekmeles and Tenet vocal ensembles, the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Ensemble Signal, Bard Summerscape Opera, the American Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Previously, he was an assistant conductor for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi, and recent guest engagements include the Ojai Festival in California, Ensemble L’Instant Donné in France, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in Australia.

As a pianist and chamber musician, Eric has worked with members of Novus New York and the Cincinnati and Princeton symphony orchestras, and his own music has been premiered and recorded by Roomful of Teeth and Quey Percussion. He taught at Mannes College/The New School for Music in New York and is in his fifth year as a member of the voice and ensembles faculty at the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music.

Carl Pantle (assistant music director/rehearsal accompanist) is a lecturer and collaborative pianist at the University of the Pacific and a recent graduate earning his bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. As a collaborative pianist and vocal coach, he brings to life dozens of operatic and musical theater scores, and his collaborations include those with Tony Award winners Patti LuPone and Laura Benanti.

As a pianist, arranger, and orchestrator in affiliation with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, he performed and recorded commissioned works by Stephen Schwartz and Jake Heggie. Pantle maintains a successful voice studio in Oakley, California, and is enthusiastically involved in the arts and arts education in his community.

Jennifer Johnson (hair and makeup design/assistant costume design) has been involved with theater in the Central Valley since 2003. She has worked more than ten years as the costume shop coordinator for San Joaquin Delta College and continues to enjoy her employment there. Jennifer received her Bachelor of Arts degree in theater arts and Masters of Arts degree in education from the University of the Pacific. Before her employment at Delta, she spent time in Utah as an apprentice to a master tailor. She has designed costumes, hair, and makeup for several venues including Delta College, University of the Pacific, Livermore Shakespeare Festival, Stockton Opera Association, and Stockton Civic Theatre. Some of her costume designs include those for A Little Night Music, Forbidden Planet, Animal Farm, The Glass Menagerie, Hansel and Gretel, and The Winter’s Tale. Jennifer’s hair and makeup designs have been seen in shows such as Dido and Aeneas, Beggar’s Opera, and Brigadoon. Jennifer has been nominated for several SARTA Elly Awards for creative works in the past and has received recognition for work from the

National Opera Association. She is supported and loved by her wonderful family, including her rambunctious children and amazing husband.

Jonathan Singer (costume design), a native to Stockton, has been working as the costume designer at the Delta College Theatre program since 2017. He received his Associate of Arts degree and was a part of the actor’s training program as a student at Delta before continuing to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from CSU Stanislaus. Jonathan earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in costume design and technology from the University of Minnesota and returned to the Central Valley and Bay Area where he has designed numerous shows over the years. Some of the more notable ones include Livermore Shakespeare Festival’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Importance of Being Earnest. His recent shows at Delta include Working, Baltimore, Pippin, The Winter’s Tale, and Cinderella.

Brian Johnson (scenic design), since first volunteering to do some scenic painting on Stockton Civic Theatre’s stage in 2007, has designed and built over a hundred stage productions in Stockton. He is honored to have joined James Haffner’s amazing creative team at the University of the Pacific in 2015 and is thrilled to still be a part of it. The collaboration on Sondheim’s Into the Woods has been truly magical! Brian wishes to thank Jim Haffner, Don Myers, and James Gonzales, for the many years of great adventure, and his mom and dad for their love and support. (I love my family!)

Don Myers (lighting design) has served as lighting designer for the Stockton Opera Association and the Faye Spanos Concert Hall since 1989. He has also designed for a number of theater companies including the Woodland Opera House, Sacramento’s 24th Street Theatre, Light Opera Theatre Sacramento, Davis Musical Theatre Company, Stagedoor Comedy Playhouse, and the Sacramento Community Opera Theatre. As an actor, some of Don’s favorite roles include Alain in The Amorous Flea, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, Clive in See How They Run, Geoffrey in Stepping Out, and John Box in Box and Cox. For the enjoyment of his granddaughter, he performs regularly with the Chautauqua Children’s Theatre Company.

James Gonzales (production manager, sound design) joined the staff of the Conservatory of Music in the fall of 2006 as stage and technical director. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in oboe performance from the University of the Pacific and has worked as audio engineer and sound designer in the Stockton, Modesto, and Sacramento areas. He recently received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Sacramento Area Regional Theater Alliance. At the Pacific Conservatory, Gonzales manages all concerts and events in the performing facilities, and he trains and supervises the staff responsible for facility and event management.

Charlotte Han (stage manager), deescribed by professors as a “future leader in the industry,” has garnered a notable presence for her exceptional ability to

manage within the arts. As both an avid musician and a natural leader, she has collaborated with musicians, arts administrators, and recording engineers from across the industry, including Daniel Ho, Meghan Umber (Martineau), Philip West, and Christian Amonson. Charlotte has held a multitude of titles for countless arts organizations, including Artistic Planning Assistant for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Junior Advisor and Public Relations Intern for Crescendo Young Musicians Guild, and Assistant to the CEO for the Stockton Symphony. Always looking to pursue her passions to the fullest extent, Charlotte presently serves as the stage manager for the Pacific Opera Theatre program, senior engineer and social media manager for the Owen Hall Recording Studio, social media coordinator for the Stockton Symphony, concertmaster of the University of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, vice president of the University Chorus, and president of the Conservatory Student Senate. She is also an active member of 28/78 New Music Ensemble, Mu Phi Epsilon, and Pi Kappa Lambda, and was a founding member of A String Quartet. Charlotte is currently a graduating senior at the University of the Pacific pursuing a major in violin performance with a minor in music management and will be pursuing a master’s degree in record production in the fall at the University of West London.

Finley Shields (stage manager) is a senior studying to be a stage manager. This is their second show with the Pacific Opera Theatre, following The Threepenny Opera last spring. They directed Stop Kiss earlier this semester, in addition to previous directing, playwriting, and acting experiences. As a graduating senior, they look forward to what the future holds and where stage management will take them.

Isabella Edwards (assistant stage manager) is working for her first time as assistant stage manager for Pacific Opera Theatre, but she is no stranger to the performing arts. As a “female tenor” in regional musical theater since the age of twelve, she has been praised for her versatility in ensemble and supporting roles, most recently in Ghostlight Theatre Ensemble’s Guys and Dolls. Isabella is a first-year honors student studying to be a theater engineer, with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in theater arts. She is thankful for the offstage experience she has received with Into the Woods, and looks forward to further adventures with the Opera Theatre.

Samantha Perrego (assistant stage manager), in her third year of university, is a passionate advocate for the arts. After seven years of being involved in theater productions on and off stage, including University of the Pacific’s production of The Threepenny Opera last year, she’s excited to be returning as an assistant stage manager for this year’s production of Into the Woods. She’s pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and hopes to continue to be involved in theater production while inspiring her students in the classroom as a music educator after graduation.

Nadia Chlala-Lubbe (properties coordinator) is a second-year sociology major at the University of the Pacific with a focus on queer studies. They have been

involved in theater for eight years and have had a focus on props since high school. From 2015 to 2021, they were involved in productions in Palo Alto Unified School District, mainly Henry M. Gunn High School. They acted in and worked on crew for many plays and musicals including King Lear, Metamorphoses, In the Heights, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Romeo and Juliet. They were the props manager for The Laramie Project and Something Rotten! in their senior year of high school. This is their first Pacific production and first time working with the Conservatory.

Andie Reposa (wardrobe assistant) is a third-year music therapy major. This is her second time costuming for Pacific’s opera program. Her experience working in the costuming department has been artistically fulfilling and she hopes you enjoy the magic of the opera.

Aiden Berchtold (wardrobe assistant) is very excited and immensely happy to be working with Pacific Opera Theatre on Into the Woods. He most recently served as head of wardrobe for Delta Drama’s productions of Love Sick and Frankenstein, stage manager for their production of Lysistrata, and will be the costume designer for their upcoming Student Rep Show in May. He is set to receive his Associates degree in technical theater this May and will be heading to Southern Oregon University to further his education in the fall. Aiden would like to thank James Haffner, Jonathan Singer, and Jennifer Johnson for all the help, teachings, and opportunities they have given him and is extremely grateful that he has gotten to meet and work with them.

MEET THE CAST

PACIFIC OPERA THEATRE ENSEMBLE

Alexis Bondoc (Little Red Riding Hood), “one of the shortest, yet strongest members in the company,” enjoys a life of fitness, both at the gym and in the practice rooms. She is a twenty-four-year-old vocalist who transferred to Pacific as a music therapy major. While at Pacific she has enveloped herself in Opera Theatre, Choir, and voice lessons, and spent a lot of gas money while doing it. Playing Little Red Riding Hood is a dream come true since she gets to have a knife and bread. She is grateful for her friends, family, Frenchie, and especially her boyfriend for always supporting her no matter what.

Riley Brearton (Cinderella’s Prince/The Wolf) has been passionate about music since his childhood. Through high school, he was active in the instrumental and vocal ensembles and is now a scholar at the University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music as a classically trained guitarist and operatic bari-tenor, expecting to earn a degree in music management in 2023. As an active chamber musician, soloist, songwriter, and private instructor, he seeks to encourage the newest generations of up-and-coming artists to become active in the current music industry.

Rose Dickson (Lucinda) is a fourth-year music therapy major and music theory minor at the University of the Pacific. Her previous roles include Dolly in The Threepenny Opera for last year’s Opera Theatre production and Mattie in her high school’s production of Stage Door. She currently studies classical voice as a soprano with Virginia Kelsey and classical piano with Sonia Leong. The other University ensembles she is involved in are Pacific Singers and a soprano/violin chamber duo. Rose is also a member of the international professional music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota where she serves as music director for this school’s chapter.

Kailey Diggs (Jack’s Mother), a soprano currently studying at the University of the Pacific under Daniel Ebbers, presents agility and dramatic vibrancy in her singing. In 2022 Kailey was named first-place winner in the Fresno State Art Song Festival’s Vocal Showcase. Recently she won the PRO concerto competition, sang in the honors recital at Pacific, and has advanced to the second round of the Classical Singer Competition. An avid ensemble singer, Kailey joined the Sacramento Master Singers as a soloist on tour in Europe in the summer of 2022. Kailey is excited to make her stage debut with Pacific Opera Theatre.

Filo Ebid (The Baker) is a singer/actor currently studying vocal performance at the University of the Pacific. Throughout his journey he has ventured into many genres ranging from pop/R & B to opera. He has been cast in many musicals and has performed across the country with choral ensembles, most notably in Carnegie Hall. He was also cast as Macheath in Pacific’s 2022 production of The Threepenny Opera, which received the award for best production in its division at the National Opera Association’s National Conference, and he was invited to perform a scene at the conference along with his castmates. Filo is immensely grateful for the time he has spent at Pacific and is eager to begin his professional career post-graduation.

Brylan Finley (The Baker’s Wife), spunky twenty-two-year old mezzo-soprano and vocal instructor, is a passionate vocal performance major studying with Daniel Ebbers at Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Brylan considers music her escape from reality and a meditative way to enjoy each day to the fullest. This enthusiastic musician craves immersion in the world of professional operatic performance and challenges conventional age stereotypes. She made her professional solo operatic debut as Julia Bertram in Mansfield Park with Opera Modesto in 2020 and also won first place in the Stockton Opera Guild’s eighteen- to twenty-five-year-old category.

Juliette Frediere (The Witch), third-year vocal performance major, is performing in her third production with Pacific Opera Theater, her most recent being cast as Lucy in The Threepenny Opera. A young coloratura soprano, Juliette hopes to continue working in musical theater and opera, as music has already taken her to hallowed stages such as Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

Hanna Grossenbacher (Florinda) is a fourth-year English and Media X major at the University of the Pacific. She has had the distinct pleasure of being a member of the Opera Theatre ensemble for her duration at Pacific. She has recently been seen in Stop Kiss and The Threepenny Opera. Hanna would like to thank her father and friends for their consistent support, as well as the entire team of Into the Woods for this opportunity.

Elaine Hanley (Cinderella’s Mother/Giant’s Wife) a United Kingdom native, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a voice concentration. She also has an Associate degree in music and over fifteen years of vocal and choral experience. Elaine is a recording artist who has toured the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, and South Africa. She has performed as a soloist with the Delta Singers Chamber Chorale, the Delta Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the University of the Pacific Singers. Elaine has also appeared as a soloist in the Opera Theatre Follies performances and the fall 2022 Prism concert. Elaine is currently studying voice with Virginia Kelsey.

Leo Hearl (Steward) is a sophomore music therapy major with his primary instrument being voice. He has been a part of the Pacific Singers and Opera Theatre ensemble here at Pacific for the last two years. As well as singing as a part of the Pacific Stocktones, the on-campus a cappella group, and the coed music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon. Leo played Crooked Fingered Jack in The Threepenny Opera last year and is excited to be a part of Into the Woods this season.

Mia Janosik (Stepmother) is a second year music education and vocal performance major studying voice with Virginia Kelsey. She is thrilled to be performing in her fourth production with Pacific Opera Theatre. Mia is eternally grateful for all of the opportunities that she has been provided with at Pacific. She is also especially thankful for the support she has received from the entire cast and crew as well as the entirety of the voice faculty for continuing to inspire her to grow as both a performer and as a person every day.

Jonathan Latta (The Narrator/The Mysterious Man), after a long career of focusing on the drumming and conducting side of musical theater, is grateful for the chance to be on the stage. In his early days, Jonathan was seen on stage in public school performances of Once Upon a Mattress (Wizard) and Dancing at Lughnasa (Gerry Evans) in his hometown of Santa Rosa, California. Since then Jonathan has performed as a musician and conductor in musical theater productions throughout California, North Carolina, Arizona, and Colorado. Most recently he served as conductor for Something Rotten! and A Christmas Story: The Musical at Stockton Civic Theatre.

Gerardo Lopez (Cinderella’s Father) is a senior music composition major. He is performing in his first-ever stage production as Cinderella’s Father in Into the Woods. He had his debut with the University of the Pacific Opera Theatre program in the

Opera Follies. He has really enjoyed his time in the opera theater program and considers it a highlight of his college years. Outside of the rehearsal hall and off the stage Gerardo can be seen composing, with a particular interest in opera and works for voice. Gerardo studies voice with Eric Dudley.

Isabella Martinez (Granny) is a fourth-year music major at the University of the Pacific. She has had the pleasure of working with Eric Dudley for three years. This is her first year working with Pacific Opera Theatre, and she is grateful for the opportunity to learn new techniques and thankful for the entire Into the Woods team. Isabella would like to thank her family and friends for their constant support throughout the years.

Michael Megenney (Jack), a tenor in his second year at the University of Pacific, is working toward his degree in music performance and is super excited to bring this production to life as part of his training. Michael has been involved in musical theater for about seven years, most recently performing the role of Jimmy/Filch in last year’s Threepenny Opera. A student of Daniel Ebbers, Michael plans to be able to share his music with the world and travel after graduating from Pacific.

Seth Neves (Milky White) is a junior music education major who is super excited to be playing Milky White! The role is a little out of his comfort zone since Seth usually plays trombone or sings bass in the Pacific Stocktones. Being part of Into the Woods is a dream come true for his younger self, as he grew up with a desire to act. He has volunteered to be in multiple skits, videos, and other projects as an actor throughout his life, but this will be his first large-scale onstage performance. He is grateful to James Haffner and the Opera Theatre Ensemble for being so welcoming and supportive!

Ian Orejana (Steward) is excited to be in his first production at the University of the Pacific. He is a first-year music composition major with an emphasis on voice. He has always loved musical theater since he was a kid, and it has been an honor for him to be a part of this community. He would like to thank the cast and crew for being so welcoming to him in this new chapter.

Ria Patel (Rapunzel), effervescent soprano, is in her second year as a vocal performance major studying with Virginia Kelsey. She has previously performed with Pacific Opera Theatre in The Threepenny Opera and the annual Follies. Ria is also a member of the Pacific Singers, Pacific’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the professional music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon. After spending several months obsessing over and making theoretical cast lists for the show, she is beyond thrilled to bring it to life with this astounding cast and production team. She is also an enjoyer of beans (both refried and magic).

2022

Charlize Price (Sleeping Beauty/Birds) is a second-year transfer student from Modesto Junior College. She found her love for music through singing in several bands throughout high school, and she is currently the lead singer for the Modesto Area Music Award winning band Portrait of Elysia. This is her first year participating in university musical theater and opera, and she plans on continuing in her future years at the University of the Pacific. Charlize is a music education major with a primary focus on voice/choral education. Her plan was always to teach, but she has recently found a love for vocal performance as well.

Michael Robertson (Steward) is a third-year composition student as well as a singer. They have been learning music for a long time, taking piano and singing lessons since the first grade and initially picking up composition for fun in their spare time. Michael always enjoyed having a more theatrical style when singing, and they did musical theater all through high school, but after starting college, musical theater fell by the wayside for them. This year Michael joined the University of the Pacific’s Opera Theatre program in hopes that it would reinvigorate that passion.

Jordan Bell Souza (Snow White/Hen) is a third year music education major with a choral emphasis. She is a lifelong lover of choral singing, and this is her third production with Pacific Opera Theatre. In the spring of 2022, she was an assistant stage manager for The Threepenny Opera at Pacific and was also a part of the Follies in the fall of 2022. Bell is an active member of Pacific Singers, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the National Association For Music Education, as well as a proud member of the professional music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota.

Ryan Vang (Rapunzel’s Prince) is an enthusiastic lover of music in all its forms. His journey began in the choir room of his high school days with his friends, which cultivated his love for making music with those around him, something that has continued since. He is currently seeking to obtain his bachelor’s degree in music education and is also interested in being a singer/songwriter of independent and pop music. Ryan is also involved as a voice teacher in the Stockton School of Music and as a private instructor..

Jordan Yang (Cinderella) is a third-year vocal performance major at the University of the Pacific and recently played the role of Polly in Pacific's production of The Threepenny Opera last spring. She currently studies the technique of classical singing but has had a history with pop, R & B, and rock. With her experience in multiple genres of music, Jordan has performed at countless events ranging from family gatherings to concerts with other artists such as the Sounders. She strives to become a professional opera singer after her time at the Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific.
