JAZZ STUDIES AT PACIFIC CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
For over 140 years, the Conservatory of Music at University of the Pacific has been delivering outstanding music education with its unique brand of handson, experiential learning through a wide variety of degree plans. Our students are musically talented, intellectually gifted and inquisitive. In addition to studies within their majors, students take courses throughout the University as part of their general education program. The close relationship among all the academic units of the University ensures a broad range of educational opportunities. Jazz studies is among the newest degrees offered in the Conservatory, where one of our most distinguished alumni, Dave Brubeck, put Pacific on the map with his excellence in this great American art form. With coursework in improvisation, theory, and applied performance, the Jazz Studies program provides its graduates with real-life skills for a career in jazz. Through courses in music management and time spent in our own recording studio, students learn about the big picture of current industry trends and how to manage their careers as a business. Students have the flexibility to study independently with any jazz faculty, regardless of instrument, providing a breadth and diversity of musical exposure. The Jazz Studies program has been well-represented at festivals and competitions around the country, and our students study with accomplished faculty, guest artists, and clinicians.
