Patrick Langham is an experienced educator and performer with a 20-year career at University of the Pacific where he serves as professor and director of jazz studies.
During his time at Pacific, Langham developed the university’s jazz studies degree programs and traveled with student performers in the U.S. and abroad.
Langham has traveled to Spain as a visiting jazz conductor, overseen student performances in Paraguay, and directed groups at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival, and Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
As a saxophonist, Langham has performed with distinguished jazz artists including Lewis Nash, Bob Hurst, Donald Brown, Tom Harrell, Essiet Essiet, Terell Stafford, and Louis Hayes.
Pianist Gary Motley embarked on a solo career in 1994 and is at the forefront of jazz in the southeastern United States. Based in Atlanta, he has captivated audiences in venues around the world.
Motley’s career achievements as a recording artist, composer, performer, arranger, educator, and piano virtuoso led to his induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 2015. Making artistic expression his life’s work, he has performed with notable artists of the jazz world ranging from Dave Brubeck to Regina Carter and Kenny Barron, and was featured on NPR’s Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland.
Recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, Motley explores many genres of music while maintaining a relentless standard of excellence. His most recent recording, Spectrum, was released in 2024.
Motley is professor of practice and founding director of jazz studies at Emory University. He is also a member of the Jazz Education Network and the National Academy of Recording Art and Sciences.
Pacific Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning big band in the tradition of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The ensemble performs classic big band literature and embraces the music of contemporary composers and arrangers. They have an impressive list of credentials having been invited to perform at jazz festivals around the West Coast.
