A big band in the tradition of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, the Pacific Jazz Ensemble performs classic big band literature while also embracing the music of contemporary composers and arrangers. The Ensemble’s impressive list of credentials includes having competition winning performances at the Reno Jazz Festival and being invited several times to play at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, California. Recent guest artists performing with the group have included Gretchen Parlato, Lewis Nash, Terrell Stafford, Carl Allen, Eric Reed, Samara Joy, and Sullivan Fortner.

A versatile jazz trumpeter based in New Orleans, Ashlin Parker is sought after for big band, small ensemble, and solo performances. He has played with various ensembles at jazz festivals and clubs in Australia, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and Wales. Parker leads the Trumpet Mafia and plays regularly with ensembles in New Orleans, such as the Ellis Marsalis Quintet, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and Bill Summers and Jazalsa. He has played with musicians such as Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Herlin Riley, Roland Guerin, Leroy Jones, Derek Douget, Adonis Rose, Dr. John, Karl Denson, Igor Butman, and Nicholas Payton, as well as vocalists Rafael Saadiq, the O’Jays, Anthony Hamilton, PJ Morton, Aretha Franklin, Quiana Lynell, Tiffany Austin, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Parker has played on more than thirty albums with other musicians and has featured solos on albums such as the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint (2019) and Live at Newport (2017), Tiffany Austin’s Unbroken (2018), Ellis Marsalis’s Ellis Marsalis Quintet plays Ellis Marsalis (2017), and Jason Marsalis’s Heirs of the Crescent City (2016).

In addition to teaching private lessons and leading masterclasses at many high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the U.S., Parker teaches children and teenagers at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music (2015–present) and serves as a professor of practice at Tulane University (2018–present). He previously taught applied jazz trumpet lessons at the University of New Orleans (2011–18).

Langham has performed as a saxophonist with distinguished jazz artists and at numerous jazz festivals throughout the southern United States. As a director he has developed and taught courses in jazz history, theory, improvisation, and performance, and he created and operated a jazz camp at the University of South Carolina–Spartanburg.

Patrick Langham joined the Conservatory of Music in the fall of 2003 as associate professor and director of jazz studies. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, both with a concentration in jazz studies, from the University of Tennessee–Knoxville. Langham previously taught at the University of South Carolina–Spartanburg and Tusculum College in Knoxville, Tennessee.

PERFORMER BIOS

At the University of the Pacific, Langham directs the Pacific Jazz Ensemble and the jazz combos, and he teaches courses in improvisation, jazz history, and theory. He also teaches in the Pacific Jazz Ambassadors program, the Summer Jazz Colony, and Pacific Music Camp.
