Welcome! Pacific Prism is a breathlessly fast-paced concert highlighting the breadth and depth of Pacific’s Conservatory of Music in performance. The styles, tempi, lighting, performing forces, and even the locations of the musicians are juxtaposed throughout the hall for maximum contrast. The pieces move immediately one to the next for 50 minutes. You may want to clap after each piece – even so, we ask that you hold your enthusiasm until the end of the show. This will be difficult! Tonight more than 150 students, faculty, staff, and alumni take part in our new annual Conservatory tradition of Pacific Prism. The Conservatory offers our performances today as a gift during homecoming, and as a celebration of Pacific’s commitment to the arts.

SOLOISTS, CONDUCTORS, AND DIRECTORS Dr. Vu Nguyen is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Bands at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. He conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and teaches courses in conducting and music education. Dr. Nguyen maintains an active schedule as a clinician and has served as guest conductor with the United States Air Force Bands of the Golden West and Mid-America, as well as regional and all-state honor bands throughout the country. Ensembles under his direction have been invited to perform at state and national conferences, most recently at the 2020 College Band Directors National Association Eastern Division Conference. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Nguyen holds degrees in conducting from the University of Washington and the University of Oregon, and a BM in music education from the University of the Pacific. Prior to his appointment at Pacific, he served as Director of Wind Ensembles and Conducting at the University of Connecticut. Conducting at the University of Connecticut. He began his career teaching in the public schools of San Ramon, CA. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Nguyen continues to serve as an officer in the Air National Guard (ANG) where he is the commander/conductor of the ANG Band of the West Coast, one of five such bands in the United States covering an eightstate area of responsibility. Luis (Tito) Talamantes has been a Mariachi educator for Stockton Unified School District for over five years. Since joining SUSD, his ensembles have been invited to The White House (2016), performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2018), and have placed in many national competitions. In 2017, a video Mr. Talamantes released of his high school Mariachi ensemble garnered the attention of Gerald Slavet, CEO of NPR’s From the Top. Prior to teaching, Mr. Talamantes was a professional studio musician performing and recording with El Regimen Sinaloense under the
Sinacal Label where some of his tracks made placements on to FX Network’s “The Bridge.” While a member of El Regimen Sinaloense, he toured with top Regional Mexicano acts such as Banda MS and Chuy Lizarraga. It was while working as a studio musician in Montebello, CA, that he arranged music for Alfredo Olivas’s sold out “Dos Mundos una Historia” tour. Ricardo (Ric) Campero is a Visiting Lecturer of Choral Conducting at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. He received a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music in 1979. Mr. Campero taught instrumental and choral programs at Ceres High School for 25 years, and recently retired from Ceres Unified School District in 2018 after 38 years in elementary, middle, and high school settings. Previously assistant director of The Stockton Chorale and Master Chorale, today Mr. Campero serves the Stockton community as director of The Stockton Singers, in affiliation with The Stockton Chorale, and as director of the Central United Methodist Church Chancel Choir. Mr. Campero is in demand as a choral singer and soloist, as well as a clinician. He will be conducting the San Joaquin and Stanislaus County Jr. High School Honor Choirs in Spring 2022. Leo Yi Chang, from Taipei, Taiwan, is a Music Performance major studying piano with Dr. Sonia Leong at Pacific’s Conservatory. He started playing piano at the age of five. Prior to attending Pacific, his teachers included En Wang at National Taiwan Normal University and Dr. Phillip Young in Pasadena, CA. He has performed in numerous master classes with such pianists as András Schiff and Dang Thai Son. Leo has won the National Piano Competition in Taiwan and was a finalist in Taipei International Piano Competition. Dr. Nicolas Waldvogel conducts University Symphony Orchestra and teaches conducting and music history at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music since 2001.
SOLOISTS, CONDUCTORS, AND DIRECTORS He has guest conducted the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande (Switzerland) and the State Philharmonic “Dinu Lipatti” (Romania). He was a Conducting Fellow at the Tanglewood Festival, where he studied with Gustav Meier, Seiji Ozawa, and John Nelson. He also assisted Horst Stein in a production of Wagner’s Der Ring der Nibelungen at the Deutsche Oper, in Berlin. Dr. Waldvogel has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, with Anonymous 4, and with Alan Gilbert. His recent credits include a performance of Ives’s immense Fourth Symphony, Verdi’s La traviata, Mozart’s Così fan Tutte, Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony and the complete symphonies by Jean Sibelius. He also contributed to the “Symphony” article for Oxford Bibliographies Online. Dr. Brittany Trotter is an Assistant Professor of Practice of flute at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. As a flutist, Trotter has been awarded first prize in numerous national and regional competitions including the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Competition in woodwinds in the states of West Virginia (2017, 2016), Wyoming (2015, 2014), and Mississippi (2009). She has also competed as a semi-finalist in the 2017 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Trotter has performed in the flute sections of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, and Colour of Music Festival Orchestra, among others. Equally versed in post-classical contemporary and experimental music as well as electro-acoustic music and interdisciplinary works, she has performed and premiered new works with Pittsburgh based new music ensemble, Alia Musica. Patrick Langham is a Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. He holds the Bachelor of Music and the Master of Music both with a concentration in jazz studies from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Langham has taught at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg and Tusculum College in Knoxville, TN. As a saxophonist, Professor Langham has
performed with distinguished jazz artists and on numerous jazz festivals throughout the southern United States. As a director, he has developed and taught courses in jazz history, theory, improvisation, and performance, and has created and operated a jazz camp at USCSpartanburg. At Pacific, Professor Langham directs the Pacific Jazz Ensemble, the jazz combos, teaches courses in improvisation, jazz history and theory, as well as in the Pacific Jazz Ambassadors program, the Summer Jazz Colony and Pacific Music Camp. Joe Mazzaferro is the Associate Director of Jazz Studies and Associate Professor of Practice in Jazz at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. As a Trumpeter, Educator, and Composer, Mazzaferro is active in the Northern California jazz scene and in demand as a guest artist and clinician. In November 2017, Mazzaferro released his debut album In Terms Of... (Joe Mazz Music) which features saxophonist Jeff Clayton along with special guests, drummer Carl Allen and pianist Donald Brown. The album has been described as “vintage hard bop with maturity” (George Harris, Jazz Weekly) as well “a little bebop, a little swing, and a lot of tenderness, heart, and passion come together on this intriguing debut” (Tom Henry, Toledo Blade). His forthcoming album Only Time Will Tell (due out Spring 2022) will feature vibraphonist Warren Wolf, drummer Carl Allen, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown. Mazzaferro has arranged compositions for big band for including SF Jazz Collective Pianist Edward Simon, drummer Carl Allen, trumpeter Terell Stafford, vocalist Jazzmeia Horn. In 2019, he contributed arrangements to the Smoke Session Record’s release Bird at 100, commemorating the centennial birth of Charlie Parker and featuring alto saxophonists Vincent Herring, Bobby Watson, and Gary Bartz. His July 2020 Big Band release Talk About It! Live @ The CLARA (July 2020) features arrangements and compositions exclusively by Mazzaferro himself.
SOLOISTS, CONDUCTORS, AND DIRECTORS Michael Downing, Assistant Professor of Practice at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, performs as percussionist with the Sacramento Philharmonic and the Stockton Symphony. He is the founder of Orphic Percussion Quartet. An active freelance musician throughout Central California, Michael has performed as a soloist at the prestigious Music al Parcs concert series in Barcelona, Spain, and with the Phoenix, Stockton, Adrian, and Sequioa Symphonies in works of Ewazen, John Williams, and in the 2012 premiere of Avner Dorman’s double percussion concerto. Gracie Liaw, from Sunnyvale California, is a second year double major in music therapy and piano performance. She is the secretary of Pacific Music Mentorship Program and Vice President of University Chorus. In her free time, Grace enjoys playing with her dog and playing guitar. Dr. Ricardo Martinez is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Saxophone at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Martinez has performed concerts internationally in France, Scotland, and Japan. He has performed frequently at major conferences including the International Saxophone Symposium, North American Saxophone Alliance, American Single Reed Summit, and World Saxophone Congress. An avid chamber musician, Martinez was Grand Prize Winner in the 2019 9th Plowman Chamber Music Competition and First Prize Winner in the 2017 Chicago Woodwind Ensemble Competition as well as national finalist in the MTNA Chamber Music Competition and North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition. At University of the Pacific, Martinez has collaborated with the Pacific Arts Woodwind Quintet, artists-in-residence at the Conservatory of Music. A supporter of new music, Martinez frequently participates in consortiums, collaborates with composers, and has performed at Society of Composers, Inc., and Midwest Composers Symposium.
Chanell Crichlow is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Tuba and Euphonium at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Chanell is a low brass multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and educator. She formed PitchBlak Brass Band in 2010 at the start of what became a vibrant brass band movement in New York City and across the globe. The group received high acclaim in both Downbeat Magazine and The Source Magazine during their tenure. A 2021 Sundance Composers Lab Fellow, Chanell had the opportunity to work closely with Film and Television composers on her craft. Creative Advisors for the intensive included Laura Karpman, Blake Neely, Heather McIntosh, George S. Clinton, Mychael Danna, Kathryn Bostic, Jeff Rona, and Christopher Willis. As a tubist, she has performed with Yuga Cohler (YEETHOVEN, K-POP), Ludwig Göransson, (Wordless Music Orchestra), Solange (Governors Ball Music Festival), Andy Grammer (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Today Show), Shamir (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), Pharoahe Monch (The Ecstatic Music Festival, Duke University), and more. Chanell has released two projects under the moniker tubafresh and composes using jazzpop structures while incorporating vocals and a custom King 1130 Flugabone designed by Scott Sweeney. Performance at Pennsylvania State University under the tutelage of Velvet Brown and her Bachelors in Classical Tuba Performance at The Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Toby Hanks. Named Art of Practice Fellow for September 2021-August 2022 through the Sundance Institute, Chanell plans on exploring the depth of sound the tuba has to offer combined with electronic effects to create a series of compositions and soundscapes for the instrument. Chanell received her Masters in Classical Tuba.
SOLOISTS, CONDUCTORS, AND DIRECTORS James Haffner is a Professor of Opera at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. He is a graduate of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing and an Artist’s Diploma in Opera Stage Directing. He is also a certified teacher of the Michael Chekhov acting technique and an Artistic Associate with the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium. His production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola took first place in the 2001 National Opera Association Production Competition and was a finalist both at the regional and national levels in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. La Cenerentola holds the distinction of being the first opera to be invited to perform in the KC-ACTF national festival. Haffner’s work has been further recognized by the KC-ACTF with encore productions of his reworking of Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill and the west coast premiere of Glen Roven’s musical Heart’s Desire. Recognition from the National Opera Association includes Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Additional significant credits include the German premiere of Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day; Das Mahagonny Songspiel, which was presented as part of the premiere Brecht Fest at the Berliner Ensemble; and Dido and Aeneas with the first annual Museumsinsel Fest, Berlin. Professor Haffner has served as the Producing Artistic Director of the Stockton Opera Association since 2007 and has worked with boththe Bay View and Bear Valley Music Festivals. He is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab-West and has served as an adjudicator for the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition (Opera San Jose). A Fulbright Scholar, he has taught at the Technische Universität, Berlin, as well as the University of Kentucky-Lexington, Miami University (OH), Webster University and the California State University, Fullerton. At the Conservatory of Music, Professor Haffner teaches Opera Theatre Workshop
(beginning and advanced sections), Introduction to Lyric Diction, Opera Literature and Opera Production. He also produces and directs the Pacific Opera Theatre productions. Eric Dudley is an Associate Professor of Practice at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music. Dudley leads a multifaceted career as a conductor, composer, vocalist and pianist deeply engaged in the performance and creation of contemporary music. Since its founding in 2009, Eric has been a member of the genre-defying vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, touring worldwide and recording a wide array of newly commissioned works with the Grammy Award-winning ensemble. Artistic Director of the nationally regarded San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Eric served as principal conductor for the Bendigo Festival of Exploratory Music in Australia, where he has appeared before on the Melbourne Festival, and led Roomful of Teeth and Ensemble L’Instant Donné in a production with Peter Sellars at the Paris Festival d’Automne. Previously assistant conductor for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi and the Princeton Symphony Orchestra under Rossen Milanov Dudley’s recent guest engagements include the Ojai Festival in California, International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in New York and Finland, Adelaide Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. As a pianist and chamber musician, he has performed with members of Novus New York and the Cincinnati and Princeton symphony orchestras, and his own music has been premiered and recorded by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Quey Percussion Duo, and by Roomful of Teeth.
ENSEMBLES The Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) is an auditioned group of wind and percussion players on campus and includes students from the various music specialties as well as many players from other majors. The SWE has gained a national reputation for creative programming, polished performance and a uniquely positive esprit de corps that serves as a lifelong influence on its members. The ensemble recorded their second compact disc at the famed Skywalker Ranch Studios in 2013. SWE travels extensively, performing recently as invited headliners at the California All State Music Education Conference and the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle. In March 2019, SWE performed at Stanford University and in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. The Pacific Singers is a select, mixed-voice chamber choir that collaborates with the University Chorus for two choral concerts each semester and performs at major university events and ceremonies. ENSEMBLES The University Symphony Orchestra provides a full range of performance experiences. In addition to the standard repertoire, the orchestra performs literature from the Baroque through the twenty-first century. It collaborates with the Pacific Opera Theatre in fullystaged operas and musical theater, and performs major choral and orchestral works with the University choral ensembles. The orchestra also performs concerti with faculty, guest artists, and with student winners of Pacific’s annual Concerto Competition Concert. ENSEMBLES Pacific’s Jazz Ambassadors are a jazz combo comprised of students pursuing a threeyear accelerated Bachelor of Music Honors Degree in Jazz Studies at the Conservatory of Music. In addition to their studies with Pacific’s Jazz faculty, Pacific’s Jazz Ambassadors perform in concert alongside Jazz luminaries including Eric Reed, Joel Ross, Lewis Nash, Terrell Stafford, and Orin Evans. Exemplars of Pacific’s historic commitment to the artform, Pacific’s Jazz Ambassadors tour internationally and nationally, including engagements in Asunćion Paraguay, New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, at Jazz Education Network Conferences, and for the Reno Jazz Festival. Pacific Saxophone Ensemble is directed by Ricardo Martinez and is an ensemble comprised of music majors playing saxophone at the Conservatory of Music. The ensemble is committed to promoting the popularity of the instrument and utilizes the full family of saxophones from bass to sopranino. The Pacific Saxophone Ensemble provides students a large ensemble music making experience and performs a variety of music including transcriptions and original works. ENSEMBLES Pacific Opera Theatre is the Conservatory’s resident student opera ensemble. The program boasts a long history of successfully training singers for the professional arena.
