May 17th
Without a doubt, I set foot on the doorstep of my new life, Clear, fresh, and eager for independence
The sun always shining on my face, the wind at my back
I await my new orders.
But sometimes, when the orders do not come, when the sun does not shine, and the wind does not blow,
The silence slowly cracks through, chipping away at the walls of my new room.
But look!! The sun is back, the wind sweeps me off my feet and my purpose has returned!
I am ready for a new day.
Cottleston Pie
Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie, A fly can’t bird, but a bird can fly.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”
Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie, A fish can’t whistle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”
Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
Why does a chicken, I don’t know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”
Sinking
Sometimes reality can seem far away, only a mere photograph of life itself
Dreams become an escape, the lucidity and detail which draw you closer to the truth
Possibilities of the future sprinkled in, a veil, desperately trying to shield you from a reality you seek so relentlessly.
Sleep too much and the reality you love is lost,
Because nothing is more real than your own thoughts.
—Gianna Pedregon —Gianna Pedregon —A. A. Milne from Winnie the PoohMy Tangram
Even though some dreams turn somber,
My image of you has never spoiled, never turned
And through the years I start to ponder
If you’re the one in the picture that I’ve so carefully preserved.
I know that life is unpredictable, but I thought this time I might ask a favor
That maybe I could get a glimpse of a future that I can savor.
But here and now I understand if wishful thinking paints me a fool
Because it’s only true if you love me, just as much as I love you.
—Gianna PedregonA Single Promise
We live and we die, and for what?
Our own purpose falls to the ones we love
I’d like very much to enjoy my life,
Holding hands with my one and only love, brimming with light
And after some time, when I’m old and tired,
I figure I might sit for a while
And look at you, with the same sparkle in your eye
And thank you kindly for such a beautiful time.
—Gianna PedregonIn My Mind
Through the madness and the tears, the one thing that fails to disappear
Are the remnants of time, the seasons, the sun
The sweet smell of the sea and the laughter of one
Myself, just small, without many worries
Observing the world with big eyes and curiosities
Finding the world so obvious and apparent
That nothing could ever make her discontented
Giggling at a bee tickling her tummy
Or the way her parents applied sunscreen to her tiny body
She set off on the sand, waddling to her heart’s content
As the waves gently crashed ashore at no end.
All she wanted was a shell,
One that was so special, you could tell,
It not apart from the others,
But one that looked more like itself than anything else.
And although she never found it,
After searching for hours until the sun set behind the mountains
She still believed that one day,
She would come back to find it hidden away
And bring it home to put it in a box
Full of souvenirs colored by her own thoughts.
—Gianna PedregonThis recital is presented as a degree requirement for a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies.
Gianna Pedregon is a violinist and composer who grew up in Whittier, California. She started playing violin at the age of four through the Suzuki method, studying with Liz Arbus. When she was around seven, she joined String Project LA, a program that taught string players different styles of music such as rock, funk, and bluegrass. As she discovered the diversities of music, improvisation seemed to be a common theme among all of them, and she started studying jazz with violinist Robert Anderson. She knew music was something she loved on a deeper level than anything else, so she continued her career, learning from many impressionable mentors such as Tamir Hendelman, Katie Thiroux, Mark Massey, and currently Joe Mazzaferro. At Pacific, Pedregon is part of the Pacific Jazz Ambassadors, a tight-knit community of jazz musicians who travel together to play across the country and internationally. She plans to further her education by pursuing a graduate degree in music performance with an emphasis in jazz studies.
