Colony Director’s Letter 2018 Welcome to the 2018 Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony at University of the Pacific! This year’s colony continues the tradition of bringing talented high school musicians from around the globe to our beautiful campus for a week of immersion in jazz technique and performance. Students attend classes and performances from artists-in-residence who are luminaries in the field; together, the students and faculty learn and stretch the boundaries of the art form. The Summer Jazz Colony is an important part of the mission of both the Brubeck Institute and the Conservatory of Music, providing education and outreach on the work of Dave and Iola Brubeck and continuing the tradition of musical excellence at Pacific. I hope you enjoy the opportunity the colony provides to hear current masters and rising stars in jazz, and I thank you for your support of these talented young people.

Recent highlights of the flagship band’s concert diary include an annual residency at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, performing with Gregory Porter at Buckingham Palace, a major European tour with the German (BuJazzO) and Dutch (NJJO) National Youth Jazz Orchestras, a televised performance at the BBC Proms and repeat appearances at the EFG London Jazz Festival. NYJO celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. Learning and participation is at the heart of everything NYJO does. The weekly NYJO Academy in London offers access to jazz ensembles at all ability levels, while partnerships with schools and music education providers around the country allow NYJO to bring the highest quality jazz education to thousands of children and young people, especially in areas of low cultural engagement.

Formed in 1983, WAYJO is Australia’s premier youth jazz orchestra and strives to provide unparalleled opportunities for outstanding emerging jazz musicians and composers. Members benefit from career-defining experiences including performing, recording and touring under the mentorship of respected Australian and international artists. Thanks to recent associations with Kunstuniversität Graz (KUG) in Austria, Showa University of Music in Japan, and the Brubeck Institute in the USA, members also have the opportunity to travel and learn internationally. WAYJO alumni feature prominently in the international jazz scene, with past members Linda Oh, Troy Roberts, Daniel Susnjar, Graeme Blevins, Daniel Susnjar and Mat Jodrell all making waves at an international level.

Artists in Resi de Patrick Langham Patrick Langham is an experienced educator and performer with a 15-year career at University of the Pacific. As professor and director of jazz studies, Langham has developed the university’s Jazz Studies degree programs from scratch. He is a co-founder of the Take Five Jazz Club in Stockton, and he regularly performs at the club and throughout the region. During his time at Pacific, Langham has always worked closely with the Brubeck Institute creating a bridge with Pacific’s Conservatory of Music on many levels. He has taught core classes to Brubeck Fellowship students since 2003, served as education director for the Institute from 2005 to 2006, and as interim executive director since 2016. In 2017, he was awarded the California Music Educators Association Jazz Educator Award honoring excellence in jazz education and performance. Langham holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, both with a concentration in jazz studies, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. As a saxophonist, he has performed with many distinguished jazz artists, including Lewis Nash, Bob Hurst, Donald Brown, Tom Harrell, Essiet Essiet, Terell Stafford and Louis Hayes.

Randy Sandoli Randy Sandoli is a pianist, composer and lecturer in jazz studies at University of the Pacific. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in jazz studies from Pacific’s Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music Degree in jazz performance from California State University, Sacramento. His major teachers include Joe Gilman, Patrick Langham and Rex Cooper. He has also studied with Mark Levine, Robert Glasper, Taylor Eigsti, Christian McBride and Joshua Redman. In 2011, Sandoli became the jazz studies director at the Zion Academy of Music in Stockton, a K-12 performing arts school, where he leads the jazz ensemble, an audition-only group of high school students emphasizing excellence in jazz performance. In 2015, Sandoli released his first album, “Gettin’ Goin,” featuring members of the 2014-15 Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. He performs regularly with others and continues to lead his own group, ranging in size from trio to sextet.

Carl Allen Jazz drummer Carl Alllen grew up on gospel, R&B and funk. After hearing a recording by the legendary Benny Carter, he turned to jazz and studied with instructor Roy Snieder and band director Robert Siemele. Early on, he played with Sonny Stitt, James Moody and Freddie Hubbard. Allen served as a musical director for Hubbard and recorded with him such compositions as “Double Take” and “Life Flight.” Recently, Allen completed a six-year tenure as the artistic director of jazz studies at The Juilliard School, New York. Besides recording, touring, producing and teaching, he is a sideman with Christian McBride and Inside Straight, as well as with Benny Golson, plus a leader for The Carl Allen Quartet and The Art of Elvin.

Gemma Farrell Gemma Farrell is a jazz saxophonist based in Perth, Washington. After three years of study at the Washington Academy of Performing Arts, Farrell transferred her degree to the Queensland Conservatorium where she graduated in 2009. That year, she was invited by Sandy Evans to be a guest lecturer at her “Young Women in Jazz” course run by SIMA in Sydney. Farrell is now the course leader for this program in Perth, where it is run by WAYJO. In 2010, Farrell moved to the Netherlands to study at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, graduating with a Master of Music degree in 2013. She also released two albums, “Vicissitude,” which was her debut album under her own name, and “Get It Together” with her quartet “Say What?!” She returned to Perth where she now performs and teaches regularly. In 2014, Farrell toured Australia with her European group MFG and recorded their debut album “Live at the Brisbane Jazz Club.” Her composition “Requiem,” featured on that album, was nominated for 2015/2016 WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category.
Tim Garland Saxophonist and Grammy winning composer/arranger, Tim Garland has had an exceptionally busy international career. He is well known as a jazz saxophonist and for his celebrated association with U.S. piano legend Chick Corea. His highly varied writing skills have been sought after by major orchestras including the LSO, RPO, CBSO, Royal Northern Sinfonia, and BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as many jazz big bands. He has been the creative force behind several award-winning ensembles that have toured internationally such as Lighthouse and Storms/Nocturnes. Brought up in Kent, U.K., Garland studied at the Guildhall School of Music and has had a base in London ever since. He joined Ronnie Scott’s band at age 23, going on to win prizes from the BBC and Parliamentary Awards. Taking a position for several years as research professor at Newcastle University and The Royal Northern College Of Music, U.K., he has become known for merging the worlds of modern concert music and jazz, fusing idioms such as Celtic folk, classical and improvised styles into a convincing whole. He occasionally teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, U.K., and writes for the music production company Audio Network. Among his recent accolades are several five-star reviews for his CD, “Songs to the North Sky,” the 2016 Jazzwise Album of the Year for “One,” and outstanding reviews for “Weather Walker” in The Evening Standard or BBC Music Magazine.
Brian Kendrick Brian Kendrick, a percussionist and educator, maintains an active performance schedule playing jazz, contemporary, orchestra and chamber music, and Broadway on the West Coast. Kendrick is a director of the jazz and percussion programs at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton and teaches regularly at the Brubeck Institute, Pacific Summer Jazz Camps, and Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. He holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in percussion performance from Texas Tech University and a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University. He has performed throughout North America and Europe. He is active as a clinician and adjudicator with jazz honor bands, professional organizations such as Jazz Educators Network and Percussive Arts Society, summer camps such as Cazadero, and numerous festivals throughout the West Coast.

Artists in Resi de Joe Mazzaferro Trumpeter, educator, composer and arranger, Joe Mazzaferro has been active in the Sacramento and Central Valley jazz scenes since 2002. His formal studies include a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from University of the Pacific and a Master of Music in Jazz and Studio Music from the University of Tennessee. As an active freelance performer, Mazzaferro has had the opportunity to play with many jazz greats including Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Ingrid Jensen, Lewis Nash and others. He had the privilege of performing the Miles Davis masterpiece, “Birth of the Cool,” with Gunther Schuller at the 2013 Brubeck Festival, and participated in the series “Remembering James Williams & Mulgrew Miller” with pianist Donald Brown’s Quartet at the 58th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. Mazzaferro is the coordinator of jazz studies at California State University Stanislaus and serves as the musical director and cofounder of the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra.

Tony Milano Pianist Tony Milano, was born and raised in Chicago and has been studying music since age five. After blues and classical music, he turned to jazz under the mentorship of Willie Pickens, Chuchito Valdes, Jon Faddis and Dan Wall, to mention a few. Milano performed with the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Student Jazz Council and continued to study jazz piano at the Oberlin Conservatory, 20142017. He has performed at Green Mill, Room 43, Andy’s Jazz Club, Millenium Park, Hyde Park Jazz Fest, Jazz Showcase, Chicago Jazz Fest and Chicago Blues Fest. He also opened for acts such as James Carter, Willie Pickens, Ari Brown, Jamila Woods and many more. Currently, Milan is in his second year as a Brubeck Fellow.
Emmett Sher Guitarist Emmett Sher, grew up in Staten Island, New York. He first fell in love with jazz in high school and then attended the Brubeck Institute Fellowship program where he studied under Stefon Harris and Ed Simon. Sher received a Young Arts Finalist Award in jazz performance and composition, and attended the Young Arts finalist week in Miami. After studying at the Brubeck Institute, he was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory where he now studies with Bobby Ferrazza, Dan Wall, Billy Hart, and Jamey Haddad. He has just returned from touring Canada and the Midwest with Frisson, an Oberlin-based crossover jazz band. Next semester, he will be studying music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Holland.

Edward Simon Venezuela native Edward Simon has made a name for himself over decades in America as a jazz improviser, composer-arranger, and band leader. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area as a member of the all-star SFJAZZ Collective, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and was awarded multiple composition grants as part of the Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works initiative. Simon, a Yamaha artist, has recorded 15 albums as a leader or co-leader. His latest is “Sorrows and Triumphs,” released via Sunnyside Records in April 2018 and declared “unmissable” in Nate Chinen’s Take Five column on WBGO.org. His 2016 album “Latin American Songbook” won him an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album; a four-and-a-half-star DownBeat review also praised his fresh vision of classic Latin American songs as “grand and sophisticated.” Simon has taught at such institutions as the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and the New England Conservatory. Currently he is Artist in Residence at the Brubeck Institute, Stockton.
Kenny Washington Kenny Washington thrills audiences across the globe with soulful interpretations, seemingly limitless range, and rapid-fire scatting. The New Orleans native, now based in San Francisco, is described as one of “the Bay Area’s best kept musical secrets. ” Washington grew up singing gospel and playing saxophone in school bands. He went on to perform as a saxophonist with the honorary U.S. Navy Band, Guam, and the 7th Fleet in Japan. Discovering his singing talent, he became a featured vocalist with both bands, performing across Asia, Russia, Australia and the U.S. He settled in the Bay Area, and it didn’t take long for word of his astounding improvisational flights, inventive approach, and emotional intensity to spread beyond the Bay Area. In 2013, he appeared at Jazz At Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra to perform Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio “Blood On The Fields”, alongside vocalists Gregory Porter and Paula West. He returned in 2014, to perform Basie & The Blues with pianist Eric Reed and in 2016 as the featured vocalist in JALC’s tribute to Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday. In 2017, he performed with Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra and vocalist Roberta Gambarini to celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday. Washington maintains a busy touring schedule and is in the process of completing his first studio album as a leader.

Rodney Whitaker Rodney Whitaker is Michigan State University distinguished professor of jazz double bass, Mack Avenue recording artist, artistic director of the East Lansing Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, and Michigan State University professor of jazz. He performs with the Rodney Whitaker Quartet with vocalist Rockelle Fortin, the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra (Orlando, FL), and Gathering Orchestra (Detroit, MI). From his early acclaim as a bassist for the Roy Hargrove Quintet, Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, bringing forth new energy, mentorship and new audiences to the jazz art form, he has cultivated and developed his talents and perspectives as a musician, composer, bandleader and educator—a 21st Century essential of artistic and educational excellence. Dedicated to changing the future of jazz in the classroom, Whitaker has proclaimed to raise 1,000 mentors who will each raise 1,000 mentors. Whether he is on stage, in the recording studio, in the classroom or in the community, Whitaker embodies a commitment to musical excellence and fortitude to keep music in the forefront.

COLONISTS Joseph Bly Joseph Bly lives on the American River in Carmichael, California. He enjoys running and kayaking to school. As a freshman, he placed first chair in the world-class jazz ensemble at Rio Americano High School where he is a student. He has received numerous awards, like DownBeat Magazine’s “Best HS Small Jazz Combo” award. Bly also played at various festivals, including Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey Next Gen Festival and Swing Central in Savannah, Georgia.
Ben Devries Ben Devries is 18 years old and lives in Sydney, Australia, where he is a high school senior. He began playing alto saxophone at age 10, and moved on to tenor around age 13. He has played alongside such artists as Denis DiBlasio, Eric Alexander and James Morrison. He currently performs in big bands throughout the country. He hopes to continue studying music after school, whether in Sydney or overseas.
Harrison Dolphin Harrison Dolphin is a British guitarist who draws inspiration primarily from bebop-era pianists, especially Bud Powell. He frequently performs with his trio, duo, quartet or solo across London and in his home county, Essex, U.K..
Serena Geroe Serena Geroe is a 17 year-old guitarist named “One of San Diego’s most promising young talents” by the San Diego Union Tribune. She leads her own trio, performs with Andy Geib’s Ambassadors of Soul, and recorded on their albums “Keeping It Real” and “Just Make It Funky.” The latter one was nominated for a 2018 San Diego Music Award. Geroe also performs with Gilbert Castellanos’ Young Lions and has participated in a variety of all-state and honor bands.
Michael Gilbert Bassist Michael Gilbert, was born in Tarzana, California. He lived in the greater Los Angeles area until age 10, when he moved north to Elk Grove, California. He first cultivated his love for jazz while playing in his middle school’s jazz band, eventually branching out into jam sessions around Sacramento, California. Today, Gilbert attends Rio Americano High School, where he plays in the Outlaws Quartet and remains active in the Sacramento jazz scene.
Carson Grimes Carson Grimes is a drummer, and he is excited to attend the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. In the past, he also participated in Pacific’s Brubeck Jazz Camp, Stanford Jazz Camp, CBDA all-state jazz band, EXA, and others. He is passionate about recording and performance. Some of his favorite drummers are Mark Guiliana, Eric Harland, and Bryan Carter.

Dalton Hayse Dalton Hayse is a junior at Hamilton Academy of Music and Performing Arts studying jazz piano. He plays in Hamilton’s award-winning Jazz A-Combo and Lee Secard‘s Colburn Jazz Workshop Big Band, both recipients of DownBeat Awards. Hayne is also a classical pianist and orchestral timpanist, having played in concerts with the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic and the LA Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Hayse’s awards include the Steinway 2018 Competition and the LA Jazz Society’s Bill Green Mentorship Award.
Tal Kalman Tal Kalman is a saxophonist born and raised in Israel. He began playing piano at age 5 and saxophone at 11. Kalman was awarded several scholarships, such as the Israeli Conservatory Scholarship Competition and Berklee fiveweek jazz workshop. At age 14, he attended the prestigious Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts and the Israeli Conservatory Jazz Department, where he had the privilege to play with great musicians such as Aaron Goldberg and Joel Frahm.
Toby Keys Toby Keys attends Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, California. He began playing jazz in middle school and has been with Rio’s AM Jazz Ensemble for three years. His instruments of choice are piano and clarinet. Keys performed at the Mondavi Center, Ulster Hall in Northern Ireland, the 60th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, Swing Central Jazz Festival in Savannah, Georgia, and Charles Mingus Festival in Newark, New Jersey. His inspirations include Bill Evans, Christina Pato, Gerald Clayton and Kenny Barron.
Meghan Lock Meghan Lock is a 15 year-old drummer from Tampa Bay, Florida. She began playing drums at age 10 with the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts. She has performed at The Clearwater Jazz Holiday and the Telluride Jazz Festival, and was awarded full merit scholarships to the 2017 Telluride Jazz All Stars and the 2018 Berklee Newport Jazz Festival Institute. She was named the 2017 Week Three winner at the international drumming contest Hit Like A Girl.
Luca Manning Luca Manning is a jazz vocalist and a resident in London, U.K. He studies at the Guildhall School of Music. He has played in major London venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, leading his own Quintet and Sextet. He is also a vocal chair at the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and was a guest on Liane Carroll’s Christmas show at Ronnie Scott’s. Manning recently won the “Rising Star”award at the Scottish Jazz Awards in the “Best Vocalist” category.
Anmol Mohara Darji Anmol Mohara Darji is a drummer currently studying music performance at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, U.K. He is also completing a junior jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2013, he completed Rockschool’s Grade 8 on drum set, earning 97 percent, the highest mark recorded at the time. Darji also won the U.K. Young Drummer of the Year in 2017, which gave him a chance to perform at the U.K. Drum Show in Manchester.

COLONISTS Max Nierlich Max Nierlich is currently a rising senior at Berkeley High School, Berkeley, California, where he is a member of the Jazz Ensemble. He has been playing the trumpet since fourth grade and is currently studying with Steffen Kuehn, Chris Marquis and Erik Jekabson. He has participated in jazz festivals in Reno, Nevada and Folsom, California performing in the big band and combo divisions. Nierlich won first place at the 2018 Jazz Search West Competition. He is also a tutor and a teacher at the summer music camp in Berkeley.
Jonathan Paik Pianist Jonathan Paik is a senior at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, California. He plays in many groups inside and outside of school and has participated in a variety of festivals and workshops across the country. This year, he was awarded Outstanding Pianist at Essentially Ellington, and won first place with the Colburn Jazz Workshop Thursday Night Band at the Next Generation Festival. He currently studies with classical pianist Marilynn Roth and jazz pianist Matt Harris.
Long Tran Long Tran is currently in his fifth year of studying bass. He picked up the bass (and jazz) in 2013 under the direction of Aaron Garner and Brian Kendrick at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. Tran has played and studied with Brian Kendrick, Chris Amberger, Donny McCaslin, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Greg Tardy, David Friesen and others.
Maximillian Wickham Maximillian Wickham is a tenor saxophonist and composer studying at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). He has been a member of the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) since 2016, and has been commissioned to write two pieces for big band as the 2018 WAYJO Associate Composer in Residence. Through WAAPA and WAYJO, he has performed with artists Megan Washington and Mat Jodrell of Australia, and the Rodriguez Brothers and Guillermo Klein of New York City.
Emma Wilburn Emma Wilburn is a senior at Woodcreek High School in Roseville, California, and studies bass under the direction of Brad North. She also studies both jazz and classical bass through private instruction with Gerry Pineda. Wilburn performed at the 2017 and 2018 Brubeck Jazz Camp directed by Patrick Langham and with Mark Armstrong at the 2017 Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. In addition, she performs at jazz festivals with Parker and the Weis Guys.
Ryan Wixen Ryan Wixen is a trumpeter and a senior at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California. His accolades include two second-place finishes at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and a DownBeat Student Music Award with the Colburn Big Band. His school received honors from Monterey and DownBeat as well. Wixen participated in the All-State and All-Southern California Jazz Honor Bands. He has performed on tours in Japan, Canada and England. He also enjoys electrical engineering, programming and music technology.

Dave Brubeck’s Vision for the
Brubeck institute
Dave Brubeck’s letter below, which articulates his hopes for the Brubeck Institute, present and future, was written just six months prior to his passing on December 5, 2012. “The Institute is a realization of a dream. From the earliest days in my career, I sought the acceptance and recognition of jazz as a serious art form that reflected American ideals of freedom and individual expression balanced with group responsibility and interdependence. Like America itself, jazz has always drawn from many cultures and has been enriched by that cross-fertilization. The Brubeck Institute is not about jazz studies alone, however. It is also about social and philosophical issues. Over the years I have become more and more interested in applying these thoughts to classical composition for chorus and orchestra, chamber ensembles, and contemporary music in a variety of forms. I believe in the power of music to transform lives as well as to enlighten and entertain. Once when asked how I would like to be remembered, I answered, “As someone who opened doors.” The purpose of the Brubeck Institute is to provide the key that opens doors for all who participate, whether as a research scholar in the Brubeck Archives, a Brubeck Fellow or Colonist, a member of academic symposia, a classical performer or teacher, contemporary composer, or an interested member of the audience. The door is open. Welcome!”

The Brubeck Institute is made up of five core programs: The Summer Jazz Colony is a one-week, scholarship-supported,
intensive educational program in jazz performance for a very limited number of exceptionally talented students who have just completed their freshman, sophomore or junior years in high school. A portion of this year’s colony program is made possible by the generous support of colonists through the Warren and ZoAnn Little Dusenbury Charitable Trust, the Peter and Alexandra Ottesen Endowed Scholarship, and the Michael Brubeck Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Cost of current annual operations: $80,000. Current scholarship gifts begin at $3,000, endowed scholarships at $50,000 and a gift to endow entire program into perpetuity: $2,000,000. Gifts of any size designated for this program allow us to attract the best musicians.

The Brubeck Fellowship Program is a one- or two-year full-scholarship program in jazz performance for five of the nation’s best musicians who have just graduated from high school. These Brubeck Fellows comprise the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (BIJQ). More than 60 percent of the students who are accepted into the Fellowship Program have attended the Summer Jazz Colony.
Cost of current annual operations: $40,000 for each of five fellows, for a total of $200,000. Gift to fully endow into perpetuity: $1,000,000 per fellow. Endowed scholarship support for a fellow starts at $50,000. Gifts of any size designated for this program help with travel costs for performances around the globe.
The Brubeck Collection is one of the world’s largest and most
comprehensive collections from a contemporary musician. It consists of Dave and Iola Brubeck’s correspondence, legal and business documents, musical recordings, music manuscripts, photographs, printed programs, memorabilia and other important archival material. Cost of current annual operations: $100,000. Gift to endow into perpetuity: $2,500,000. Gifts of any size designated for this program keep this living archive accessible.
The Brubeck Festival is an annual event that celebrates and explores the musical, intellectual and philosophical ideas of Dave Brubeck, as well as his influence on the world of music and ideas. Cost of current annual operations: $80,000. Gift to endow festival into perpetuity: $2,000,000. Annual sponsorships start at $2,500. Gifts of any size designated for this program keep the festival open to the community.
The Brubeck Outreach Program is designed to encourage the performance, study and understanding of jazz in its many forms, explore contemporary concert music, enlighten and broaden the general knowledge and appreciation of music, and promote the understanding of the work and influence of Dave Brubeck. Cost of current annual operations: $20,000. Gift to endow outreach program into perpetuity: $500,000. Gifts of any size designated for this program allow jazz education to be presented by the BIJQ in schools around the nation.

The Brubeck Institute was established by University of the Pacific in 2000 to honor its distinguished alumni, Dave and Iola Brubeck. The mission of the institute is to build on Dave Brubeck’s legacy and his lifelong dedication to music, creativity, education, and the advancement of important social issues including civil rights, international relations, environmental concerns and social justice. The Institute maintains its five programs, including the Brubeck Collection, Brubeck Festival, Brubeck Fellowship Program, Summer Jazz Colony and the Outreach Program.
