Claudia Montero

Argentinian composer, four-time Latin Grammy Award winner, Claudia Montero (1962–2021) served as the composer in residence at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona and on the faculty of the Conservatori Superior de Música Salvador Seguí de Castelló. She received commissions from countless international orchestras including the RTÈ Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, München Philharmoniker, Buenos Aires Chamber Orchestra, and the Taipei University Orchestra. She also served on the jury of competitions such as the Castellón International Bands Contest, INJUVE Awards, and the JOCME Composition Awards.

Clarice Assad

A powerful communicator renowned for her musical scope and versatility, Brazilian American Clarice Assad (b. 1978) is a significant artistic voice in the classical, world music, pop, and jazz genres. The Grammy Award–nominated composer, celebrated pianist, inventive vocalist, and educator is acclaimed for her evocative colors, rich textures, and diverse stylistic range. With her talent sought after by artists and organizations worldwide, the polyglot musician continues to attract new audiences both onstage and off.

Louise Farrenc

Louise Farrenc (1804–1875) was the only female professor of music to be hired in the nineteenth century at the famous Paris Conservatory. She was a great pianist who was also a composer, mainly of symphonies and chamber pieces. In her day she was greatly admired, and her fame is beginning to resurface in the twenty-first century. She was also the coeditor of a book on early music called Treasures of Pianists. She was a great admirer of early music, and its influence can be heard in her own musical compositions.

Fernanda Lastra holds the position of assistant conductor, Diversity Fellow for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. In this role, she also serves as cover conductor, main conductor for the BPO Family Kids series, Music for Youth concerts, and community engagement performances. Additionally, she serves for BPO as a member of their artistic team, the music education committee, and the Diversity Council.

Lastra is a passionate and creative conductor with a wide range of interests in repertoire, including symphonic, contemporary, and operatic works. She has collaborated with artists such as Aida Cuevas, Jay White, Jeans’n Classics, and Michael Grandinetti. In May 2025, Fernanda is scheduled to make her debut with the Buffalo Philharmonic.

As a guest conductor, Lastra has led professional and youth orchestras in the U.S., Argentina, and Brazil. Some of her previous engagements include conducting the Walla Walla Symphony as well as leading three performances of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale alongside musicians from the Boston Symphony at The Birch Festival, Berkshires, Massachusetts. As an assistant and cover conductor, Lastra has had the opportunity to work alongside esteemed conductors such as JoAnn Falletta, Giancarlo Guerrero, Maximiano Valdés, Gerard Schwarz, Mei-Ann Chen, Joseph Caballé-Domenech, and Michael Francis.

Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Lastra is committed to featuring diverse voices in concert halls. Lastra is an advocate for Latin American composers and is passionate about community engagement and music education. She believes in the transformative power of music to unite, heal, and to develop emotional intelligence.

UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

University Symphony Orchestra

Pacific’s University Symphony Orchestra (USO) performs an inclusive range of contemporary and historically significant symphonic works, performs annually with Pacific’s Opera Theatre in fully staged productions, and partners frequently with Pacific Singers in choral-orchestral works. Pacific faculty, students, and guest artists perform with the USO as concerto and aria soloists and as guest conductors. Pacific’s Conservatory faculty serve as coaches as the USO prepares each concert cycle. Participation is open to all Pacific students by audition.
