Welcome Musica Viva’s 2019 concert season is such a glittering array of treasures that it’s hard to know where to start. Arguably the most famous choir in the world, the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge makes an eagerly awaited return in a poignant year that marks the farewell performances of Stephen Cleobury after 37 years as the group’s Director of Music. Also an exceptional event is the appearance of legendary American ensemble the Emerson String Quartet on its first visit to Australia in 19 years. Other familiar faces in the year are those of the most exciting string quartet in Britain today, the Doric String Quartet. The Doric has appeared previously at the Musica Viva Festival and at the Huntington Estate Music Festival, but this will be its first national concert tour. The rest of the season comprises stunning debut appearances, headed by rising superstars the Skride Piano Quartet. Thrilling British cellist Natalie Clein has appeared Down Under before, but this will be her first
tour for Musica Viva. Early music has rarely sounded as chic and brilliant as when played by the young French ensemble Nevermind. Our final debut ensemble is the ZOFO piano duet from the USA in awe-inspiring multimedia performances built on newly commissioned music by fifteen international composers accompanied by paintings from the leading artists of their homelands. The year’s program covers an immense range of repertoire which also features world premieres commissioned from Australian composers Natalie Williams, Brett Dean, Ross Edwards and Graeme Koehne. Chamber music at its best is a unique and sublime expression of human achievement that reminds us all of the beauty in our world and everything worth preserving. We look forward to sharing it with you. Carl Vine ao Artistic Director

Natalie Clein & Katya Apekisheva
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Natalie Clein plays the cello with a unique combination of passion and delicacy. It’s as though the cello becomes her voice, and she is simply telling us a story through music and emotion. Such direct, open communication is more often experienced from singers and actors, but this leading British cellist allows no technical challenge to get in her way. For her first full Australian tour she has chosen to work with pianist Katya Apekisheva, a talented chamber musician of great sensitivity. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Every work on this program speaks to the heart. Whether it’s the mature elegance of Beethoven’s masterful last cello sonatas, or the charm and deceptive simplicity of Vaughan Williams’ folksongs, or the expressive honesty and vitality of Bloch and Kodály, each work is an emotional journey. Rebecca Clarke’s richtoned Sonata makes a 20th-century counterpart for an exciting world premiere, tailor-made for the artists by Australia’s Natalie Williams.

ZOFO ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
Playing one piano with four hands – but a unified artistic mind – is about the most intimate form of chamber music there is. Colleagues Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi are a ‘20-Finger Orchestra’, from which they take the name of their duo, ZOFO. For the past decade their amazing, quirky, musically gripping performances have enthralled audiences around the world: now it’s Australia’s turn! PROGRAM OVERVIEW
ZOFO commissioned a ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ for the 21st century, seeking out composers from 15 countries and asking them to choose a piece of visual art from their own culture, then write a short piece inspired by it. The result is ZOFOMOMA, a celebration of marvellous pianism set against an enthralling background of international artworks, creating an imaginary tour of a brilliant modern gallery to intrigue and engage the ears and eyes. Each short composition has an entirely unique character for the listener to discover, from gently beautiful to edge-of-the-seat thrilling. No two are alike and the result is an unforgettable concert experience.

Doric String Quartet ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The Doric String Quartet was founded in 1998 and has grown into Britain’s leading quartet. Audiences around the globe are irresistibly drawn into their intense, finely detailed playing. Whether tackling the delicate nuances of earlier composers, or embracing the dramatic gestures of contemporary ones, the Dorics meet every artistic challenge with a captivating blend of sophistication and passion. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Early critics of Haydn denounced his ‘debasement of the artform with comic fooling’, but generations of adoring listeners have proved them wrong. The trick ending of the ‘Joke’ Quartet gave it its nickname; and its cousin, op 33 no 4, is no less delightful, mixing playfulness with an especially lovely slow movement. Haydn’s successors to the quartet-composer crown, Schubert and Beethoven, are represented with two glorious undisputed masterworks; and each program presents the new piece from celebrated Australian Brett Dean, written for this, his favourite string quartet, with whom he has collaborated many times.

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The distinctively pure tone of this legendary British choir has been honed over centuries in the vaulted stone arches of the College Chapel. Comprising 16 boys (the youngest aged seven) and 15 male university students, the Choir has a highly competitive audition process, and requires commitment to singing daily religious services. These special performances mark the Choir’s final tour with Stephen Cleobury, after 37 distinguished years as Director. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This Choir remains a major force in the choral world by balancing unmatched history and tradition with continual growth and vibrancy. The repertoire in these programs reflects this breadth. The best of British music is showcased from the Renaissance to the present day, alongside gems from other lands including the most recent addition to their repertoire, a work from Australia’s own Ross Edwards.

Emerson String Quartet ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Perhaps the most celebrated string quartet ever to emerge from the USA, this season the Emerson String Quartet makes its first Australian tour in over 19 years. Founded in 1976 and with only one personnel change in all that time, the ensemble has stacked up more than 30 recordings and countless awards. With such a pedigree, it is no surprise that the Emersons play with masterly warmth and ease: a spontaneous confidence and joy that radiates to their listeners. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Naturally enough, a master string quartet has chosen to play two programs of great masterpieces. Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven were writing with their audience very much in mind, and their quartets are full of attention-grabbing highlights and dreamy slow movements, while the vitality of folk music shapes the quartets of Dvořák and Bartók. Shostakovich’s Fifth Quartet did not appear until after the death of Stalin, when its icy, wintry darkness could at last be safely brought into the light.

Nevermind ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Nevermind is an extraordinary group of early music specialists, friends who connected at the Paris Conservatoire, and who are rewriting the rule-book on period-instrument concerts with a thoroughly engaging mix of virtuoso expertise and unpretentious charm. Delighting audiences across Europe in prestigious festivals and concert series and making their Australian debut with Musica Viva, Nevermind are dedicated to the universal appeal of good music. As they say, ‘Never mind who you are – this music is for you.’ PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Nevermind breathes new life into these gorgeous, gilt-edged Baroque masterworks. Program 1 celebrates the great German composers Bach and Telemann, born in the same year and the acknowledged masters of effortlessly engaging counterpoint. Program 2 puts Nevermind on their French home turf with all that is brilliant and beautiful about this era of music: works which are elegant, songful and full of imagery and life.

Skride Piano Quartet ABOUT THE ARTISTS
A new classical supergroup of four leading European soloists, the Skride (‘skridd-eh’) Piano Quartet is sweeping through the northern hemisphere like a breath of fresh air – and is now bringing its dazzling energy to Australia. Sisters, soloists and regular duo partners, Baiba and Lauma Skride sought out two of their favourite chamber music colleagues in Lise Berthaud and Harriet Krijgh. Together these stunning virtuosi play with a palpable sense of joy, mutual respect and endless invention. PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Piano quartets are less often heard than piano trios, but the simple addition of a rich-toned viola seems to inspire composers to create music of outstanding lyricism. Richard Strauss wrote his as a mere teenager, but it already shows all his hallmark instinct for melody and emotional depth. Mozart and Beethoven relished the opportunity to write fleet-fingered virtuoso piano parts in the clear-textured Classical style, while Brahms took what he learned from them and added his own gift for tunefulness. The Skride Piano Quartet specifically asked Graeme Koehne to write a piece for them: a composer renowned for colourful, rhythmic flair, he is indeed the perfect match for this wonderfully exciting group.

Natalie Williams
Carl Vine ao
Natalie Williams is a composer, academic and orchestrator, born in the Barossa, who after studying and teaching at major colleges in the USA is now resident in the ACT. Critical acclaim highlights the ‘richly expressive’ character of her wideranging catalogue of music, written for film, theatre, dance, orchestra and chamber ensembles, including her substantial string octet Saudade, premiered by the Doric and Pavel Haas Quartets at the 2015 Musica Viva Festival, and pieces for most of Australia’s major orchestras, as well as for soloists around the world. For the 2019 season, Natalie will create a cello sonata for Natalie Clein and Katya Apekisheva.
Carl Vine is one of Australia’s bestknown composers, with a catalogue including eight symphonies, 12 concertos, music for film, television, dance and theatre, electronic music and numerous chamber works. His Piano Sonata no 1 has for many years been the most-performed Australian work internationally. Recent compositions include a concerto for two pianos, premiered by Piers Lane and Kathryn Stott; Five Hallucinations, a trombone concerto for Michael Mulcahy and the Chicago and Sydney Symphony Orchestras; and The Enchanted Loom (Symphony no 8) for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The Arrival of Implacable Gifts, inspired by the artwork of James Gleeson, is the Australian contribution to ZOFO’s multinational ZOFOMOMA program.
Brett Dean
Ross Edwards am
Graeme Koehne ao
Following studies in Australia, Brett Dean travelled to Germany in 1985 and joined the violas of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1988 he began composing, and came to public attention through worldwide performances of the ballet One of a Kind and his award-winning clarinet concerto Ariel’s Music. He now keeps a busy schedule as a freelance composer, performer and conductor, with recent highlights including the acclaimed opera Hamlet, presented at Glyndebourne and at the Adelaide Festival. Leading interpreters include Sir Simon Rattle, Markus Stenz, Simone Young, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Daniel Harding and the Doric String Quartet, for whom he has written a new work to mark Melbourne Recital Centre’s 10th Anniversary.
Ross Edwards is an acclaimed composer whose distinctive music is deeply connected to its roots in Australia, celebrating cultural diversity and drawing inspiration from the natural environment, especially birdsong and the mysterious patterns and drones of insects. Ross has composed prolifically in most musical genres. His latest works include Zodiac for the Houston Ballet, Entwinings for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Bright Birds and Sorrows, a quintet for Amy Dickson and the Elias String Quartet premiered at the 2017 Musica Viva Festival. His new work for the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, features his trademark rhythmic buoyancy and sense of joy.
Graeme Koehne’s music has attracted a warm following for its brilliant synthesis of Classical tradition, contemporary vitality and an appealing popular touch. One of Australia’s most notable composers, especially praised for his peerless ear for instrumental colours, his achievements include the first full-length work commissioned by The Australian Ballet; orchestral pieces including Powerhouse, Elevator Music and Inflight Entertainment (his amplified oboe concerto for Diana Doherty and the Sydney Symphony); and a collection of chamber music in various forms. Currently Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide, Graeme was the Skride Piano Quartet’s first choice to create a new piece especially for their 2019 tour.

More on Musica Viva MUSICA VIVA AUSTRALIA
MUSICA VIVA FESTIVAL
Artistic Director Carl Vine ao
Presented in association with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, our biennial chamber music festival showcases the best local and international chamber music artists in four days of concerts, talks and masterclasses.
Musica Viva is Australia’s oldest independent professional performing arts organisation. Our story began in 1945 as a chamber music organisation focused on just one ensemble. Over the years we have evolved to embrace ensemble music of all styles and genres, presenting leading Australian and international artists to concert audiences and school students across the country. Today, our activities embrace digital technologies to reach an even wider audience, and we are at the forefront of artist development – inspiring musicians and audiences alike in a shared passion for ensemble music of quality, diversity, challenge and joy.
MUSICA VIVA IN SCHOOLS Artistic Director Michael Sollis Musica Viva In Schools (MVIS) has been setting the standard in music education since 1981. We are dedicated to ensuring all Australian children have the opportunity to experience the joy of music, and we support teachers with professional development and curriculum-linked resources.
MORNING CONCERTS A morning concert series, presented in Sydney and Melbourne, featuring performances by leading Australian and international ensemble artists, including pre-concert tea, coffee and cake. 30

FUTUREMAKERS Artistic Director Genevieve Lacey Musica Viva’s artist leadership initiative FutureMakers discovers and enables Australia’s musical leaders of tomorrow. By offering them extensive mentoring and extraordinary opportunities, FutureMakers equips these brilliant and curious musicians with advocacy tools, entrepreneurial skills, platforms, audiences and a global network,
providing them with the foundation to create new work that will shape and inspire cultural life in the 21st century.
HILDEGARD PROJECT
The Hildegard Project in support of women in composition was launched in April 2015, and was made possible by generous initial funding given by Katherine Grinberg in honour of the late Adrienne Nagy and her sister Yolanda (Nagy) Daniel. Together with the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composition, and the support of many kind donors around Australia, Musica Viva is able to continue its proud tradition of creating new Australian work across all of its activities.
REGIONAL TOURING Musica Viva’s innovative regional touring program partners with performing arts centres, volunteer music societies and conservatoriums to deliver a range of exceptional music experiences to thousands of regional Australians each year.
MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION Artistic Director Wilma Smith In partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre and the Australian National Academy of Music, Musica Viva is the presenter of Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The Eighth Competition was held in July 2018.
