WALTHAMSTOW SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Y11 BAND

The Year 11 Steel Band have been playing together since they were in Year 7. Unfortunately, their lessons were cancelled during COVID so they had a break for 1.5 years but their enthusiasm for playing, and daily practices, have made up for every day lost astonishingly quickly. Their group leader, Richard Murphy, has been teaching Steel Bands at Walthamstow School for Girls, for 38 years.

BISHOP STOPFORD SCHOOL BRASS BAND

Bishop Stopford School Brass Band has been performing for over 40 years and are delighted to performing at the Music for Youth Proms for the first time. The band also has members who are members of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. Previous members of the school band include James Fountain principal trumpet of the London Symphony orchestra and his brother Thomas Fountain principal trumpet of the Ulster orchestra.

RUBIK’S CUBE

Rubik’s Cube are a pop/rock choir that sing and use Makaton sign language while performing. The choir formed at Osborne School in Winchester over 12 years ago and the group includes over 30 young people with a range of special educational needs. The performers support each other, and this was no more apparent than during the Covid-19 lockdown where the band continued to meet every Monday for rehearsals and performances online. Other achievements by the band include playing as the Olympic torch arrived into Winchester in 2012, supporting local charities and playing a show with Peter Andre!

GWENT MUSIC HARP ENSEMBLE

The Gwent Music Harp Ensemble was formed in February 2022. Since February, the ensemble performed their first concerts during April and May of this year, raising significant funds for the Ukrainian Appeal and other local charities. The ensemble at present consists of sixteen members ranging from the ages of eight to eighteen years old. The ensemble are enjoying performing and learning a wide range of traditional Welsh arrangements and Latin America compositions.

RAINBOW CONNECTION JUNIOR CHOIR

Students at Rainbow Connection Junior Choir all come from different schools in the City of Doncaster connected by a love of singing and performing. It’s an extra special event for the older members of the choir who are being rewarded for their resilience in sticking with zoom rehearsals week in week out through the pandemic. They would like to dedicate their 2nd piece to those who we lost during that time.

NORFOLK STUDENTS’ JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The Norfolk Students’ Jazz Orchestra aims to nurture jazz technique and improvisation giving aspiring young musicians the opportunity to play a wide variety of repertoire from Big Band to modern jazz. We have played alongside jazz stars Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Gavita and performed locally at the Norwich Jazz Club. Our conductor Geraldine Evans is an inspirational teacher of woodwind sharing her love of Jazz with not only our ensemble but young people all over Norfolk.

PEAR

East Anglian duo Pear (orig. Erin and Toby) makes and play acoustic folk pop, however the duo currently consists of Erin and DT, combining close-knit harmonies with sweet sounding acoustic guitar. Having both been involved in music from an early age, Pear takes inspiration from artists like James Bay, Kawala and Oh Wonder.

LOVE MUSIC TRUST PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

The Love Music Trust Percussion Ensemble has performed in many of the UK’s finest concert halls and in 2018 achieved a gold medal at the World Music Contest held in Kerkrade, Holland. We have commissioned and premiered numerous works by professional composers such as Jan Bradley, Stephen Whibley, Andy Scott and Anthony Kerr who have all worked with the students to develop their own style and are currently working on a commission by Stephen Whibley (BBC Concert Orchestra) for Percussion Ensemble and String Orchestra. Over the years many of the students have also written for the group and are currently working with Southern Percussion to Publish several works.

Lifeofkwasi is a musician residing in North London making predominately rap music. Those who’ve heard his music describe it as sentimental and happily sad for the most part. Lifeofkwasi has a cohesive blend of both playful & conscious lyrics, and a emotive tone is to be expected.

No Trixx is a three-piece Contemporary Fusion collective based in East London. After meeting in Music College, they have been working to cement their legacy in the industry. The distinctive sound they bring to the music scene offers unique licks and choppy grooves for all music lovers to enjoy.

MUSICA YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Musica Youth Orchestra (MYO), under the umbrella of Musica Kirklees, was founded in September 2000. Its aim is to provide high quality orchestral opportunities for the students in the area who have reached advanced standards of performance. Recent tours to Salzburg, Czech Republic, Lake Garda, Provence, Barcelona and even Stratford-upon-Avon have proved extremely popular and the orchestra has even performed many times at their conductor’s favourite venue: Disneyland, Paris!

MUSICA YOUTH STRINGS

Musica Youth Strings loves playing all different genres of music and they always have a voice in the repertoire we choose and work on. It is important to try and give the young people an opportunity to play a solo and feature them in the music we choose and today, we are able to feature our amazing front desk performing the Tango for you. We rehearse weekly during term time, and due to the students being mainly 16+ we always reach the summer term and clashes with exams, but somehow the students always manage to find time to commit to the orchestra and come to rehearsals.

CANTILENA FROM THE ABBEY JUNIOR SCHOOL

We are Cantilena from The Abbey Junior School in Reading. We are all from years two and three and we enjoy learning new songs, including songs in parts or with actions. Last year was our first time singing in a choir and we were really excited to perform at our local music festival and at the NFMY, in Birmingham, on the last day of the summer term. This was a fantastic way to end our first year of singing in a choir and we enjoyed being able to watch other live performances. We are very excited to perform today.

The Mountbatten Big Band was formed in 1997 and over the years the band has evolved and developed into its current line-up, using the standard Big Band format. From classic tunes by Count Basie and Duke Ellington, to contemporary works by cutting-edge composers such as Vijay Iyer, the band’s repertoire includes something for everyone. All of the members of the band are extremely dedicated, and many former members have gone on to study jazz at top UK conservatoires.

LINCOLNSHIRE MASSED ENSEMBLE

For many years, Lincolnshire Music Service has been proud to host a Music for Youth Regional Festival in Boston. To share the love, Boston Music Centre have invited schools from across Lincolnshire who have supported MFY to join them at this year’s MFY Prom, creating a spectacular massed ensemble. Lincolnshire is a large, diverse and rural county with pockets of isolation and deprivation with low cultural engagement. Many of the young performers have English as their second or even third language but are all united in their music. A lot of the young instrumentalists are beginners with many learning, free of charge, at Boston Music Centre.

The York Music Forum Youth Jazz Ensemble are based in York and perform music rarely performed by other youth ensembles in the UK. They play mostly jazz fusion with an emphasis on tight ensemble playing and exciting improvised solos.

CITY OF BELFAST YOUTH ORCHESTRA

The City of Belfast Youth Orchestra (CBYO) is the oldest Youth Orchestra in Ireland. On stage tonight, 21 schools from the Belfast area are represented. Everyone involved with the CBYO are very pleased to have been invited back once again to perform in the Prom concerts. Further information on the orchestra can be found at www.cbyo.co.uk. Tonight the Orchestra will perform Franz Herold’s overture to the Opera Zampa. This real tour de force showcases every section of the Orchestra, and everyone is looking forward to performing it in this amazing venue.
