Take a good look at the cover of this catalogue. We would like to introduce you to our friends of the Nightwatch, proudly showing off their latest purchases and giving their precious vinyl a listen on the good ol’ record player. You might recognize this painting as a world famous Masterpiece by Dutch artist Rembrandt Van Rijn – a name that doesn’t need further introduction. For this year’s catalogue, we added a little ‘vinyl magic’ to celebrate the Dutch Vinyl Masters, a collection of Dutch albums that have conquered the world. You can find these in the centrefold of this catalogue (p16-17). The past 12 months we have not been sitting still: earlier this year we celebrated our 500th release, by the end of 2012 our catalogue will have grown to about 700 titles. We released a diverse range of classic albums by Rory Gallagher, Electric Light Orchestra, B.B. King, Miles Davis, Live, White Zombie, The Who, Iron Butterfly to mention only a few. Live At The Carousel Ballroom (2LP) The June 23, 1968 show of Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Carousel Ballroom would prove to be legendary on a number of levels. Janis would leave the band only two months after the show to pursue her solo career, making this one of the last times the ensemble worked together. The show was recorded by Augustus Owsley Stanley III a.k.a. ‘Bear’: soundman of The Grateful Dead and a masterful LSD-cooker, who also supervised the re-mastering of the recordings shortly before his death in March 2011. This is to be the first in a series of releases from his archive titled ‘Bear’s Sonic Archive’, and it promises to be one hell of a ride. Though some of these songs have appeared on a 1972 Janis Joplin collection before in a very raw form, this is the first time these recordings are being released on vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve.

Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band at their peak in the late sixties and early seventies, gaining major cross-Atlantic success. With their single “Venus” (1969) they became the first Dutch band ever to reach the Number 1 spot on the American Billboard Hot 100. Although considered a singles-band, they released several very high quality albums.

One of the best albums, in many ways, is 1970’s Scorpio’s Dance. The cover artwork alone is recognised as one of the most legendary LP sleeves in Dutch Pop history. The Music On Vinyl issue boasts the original gatefold sleeve and contains 4 bonus tracks not available on the original LP edition.

Pulp came, saw, and recorded one of the best albums of the genre with 1995’s Different Class. The inspiration for the title came from a friend of Cocker who used the phrase ‘different class’ to describe something that was ‘in a class of its own’. Cocker liked the double meaning, with its allusions to the British social class system – a theme of some of the songs on the album; ‘We don’t want no trouble, we just want the right to be different. That’s all.’ Two of the singles on the album – “Common People” and “Disco 2000” (reaching #2 and #7 in the UK Singles Chart respectively) – were especially notable for propelling Pulp to nationwide fame.

Daub a bit of glitter on your cheekbones and become a star; Marc Bolan of British Glam Rock band T. Rex did just that. It wasn’t only his flamboyant personality, eerily good looks and enigmatic stage presence that made him one of the most popular artists of his time, he was a prolific songwriter, poet and an inventive singer/guitarist to boot. In 1972 EMI signed this remarkable artist and created a dedicated label for him called T. Rex Wax Co. through which he released six albums in as many years until Bolan’s fatal car crash in 1977.

This is a collection of all the singles he cut for the label, and Music On Vinyl is the first to release this compilation on vinyl. With excellent artwork and liner notes by Mark Paytress, The T.Rex Wax Co. Singles A’s and B’s is a great introduction for those less familiar with these British pioneers, and it’s “T.
