A FANTASY (2011) for SATB div. a cappella
Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet known for the lyricism in her works. A large number of her works talk about love and death and echo feminist traits of her time. She also has a number of works that talk about spiritism and the beauty of the natural world. A Fantasy is part of a collection of poem she wrote called Helen of Troy and Other Poems (1911) where it was categorized under Sonnets and Lyrics. e whole work was dedicated to a dear friend of Teasdale, American poet Marion Cummings Stanley. A Fantasy is an ethereal setting of Sarah Teasdale’s poem for a cappella mixed choir. It starts of with drones, in 5ths, stacked above each other, sung by the men, the women do echoes of the same motif right above it, painting the scene of a mystical forest. e piece uses whole tone scales and modal harmony to evoke mysticism and ‘dreaminess.’ It also uses a shapely melodic structure that mirrors the lyricism in Teasdale’s poetry. e poem’s central character, an abstract concept put to life, Quiet, weaves through the forest and goes about her mystical activities. e climax of the piece happens with this announcement: “Her kisses are the roses that glow while dusk is deep, in Persian garden closes, where Quiet sits and dreams.” A Fantasy was written for Mark Anthony Carpio and the multi-awarded Philippine Madrigal Singers. It received its premiere at the 9th World Choral Symposium in Puerto Madryn, Argentina 2011. .
