“Love,Seek,Serve”waswrittentocommemoratethe40thanniversaryofSt.Paul’sUnitedMethodistChurch inLenexa,KS,celebratedonSeptember29th,2024.Thetextwaswrittenwithinspirationfromthechurch’s welcomestatementwiththe firstversecenteredon‘Love,’thesecondon‘Seek,’andthethirdon‘Serve.’The textforthebridgewasmoregenerallycreatedwiththeideaoflookingforwardintothefuture.
Theintentionbehindthepremiereof“Love,Seek,Serve”wastocombinemusiciansfromthetraditionaland contemporaryservicesatSt.Paul’s,aswellastoincludethecongregation.Inthatspiritof flexibility,itismy hopethatcongregationsareabletousethecompositioninawaythatsuitsthembest.Thefullcompositionis includedintwokeyswithmatchingleadsheets.Thefollowingareideasandsuggestionsforhowto incorporate“Love,Seek,Serve”intoachurchservice:
Hymn: Pickany/allversestosing,separatingthemwiththechorus.Thebridgeisoptional.Ifitisnotused, endafterthechorusintheoriginalkey.ItissuggestedtousetheDMajorEdition,shouldthecongregationbe included.Thechoruscanalsobesegmentedandusedasabenedictionorsungresponse.
ChoirAnthem: Theversescanbesungbyanycombinationofvoiceparts,assolos,orincludethe congregation.Thechorusisthensungbya4-pt.choirwiththecongregationonthesopranoline.Asachoir anthem,itissuggestedtosingfromthebeginningtotheend(includingthebridge,)butmodificationscanstill bemade,suchasexcludingaverseorthebridge. TheFMajorEditionissuggestedforthisvariant.
PraiseBandAnthem: Includedrums,guitar,bass,etc,usingeitheredition’sleadsheetsascomfortable.As above,anyonecansingtheverses,andtheATBvocalpartsofthechoruscanbeomitted.Thecongregationcan easilybeincorporatedontheversesorthechorus.
VocalSolo: Eithereditioncanbeusedtosuitasoloist’sindividualvoice.Itcanbeaccompaniedsimplyby pianoorincludeotherinstrumentsasseen fit.Theinclusionofthebridgeisrecommended,butifthoughttobe toolong,oneoftheversescanbeomitted.Again,thecongregationcanbeincorporatedwherewanted.
