Sendai is a city and prefecture in northeast Japan most devastated by the March, 2011 earthquake and tsunami. In the Japanese language, Sendai – when not a place name – has a variety of meanings: among them, curiously, are “forever” and “a shipbuilding berth.” These disparate meanings are united in my empathy for the victims of one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory: among me, and the people of Japan, the images of loss will live within my mind for so long as I live, and as the region slowly mends, Sendai will indeed become a place for rebuilding – homes, livelihoods, lives, all in the shadow of grief. The texts are not directly jisei – traditional Japanese poems written by monks and poets at the hour of their death – but the poems do speak of loss, of empathy, and of the ephemeral nature of our life on the planet, though in incredibly subdued and beautiful ways. Texts – with transliterations, verbatim translations, and poetic translations into English by my hand – follow on the next page and are accompanied by an American English pronunciation guide.

* The piano part may be treated as an optional – it is not meant to be showy, and may be excluded if seen fit to do so by the choral director. It is simply harmonic reinforcement and range extension. That said, it should not be treated as a rehearsal aide for the choir; it is its own quiet, simple actor in the work. Additionally, there is an alternate version that does not contain flute.

Pronunciation notes (footnotes overleaf): Modern Japanese phonology is not incredibly difficult; for performance purposes, all consonants (except for notes, below) maintain one sound consistently. One prime exception is R: there is no English equivalent, and it is a voiced alveolar flap halfway between L and R in English . An approximation is the RR in the Spanish word burro, though untrilled. The letter F is also problematic: it is best described by the halfway-point between voicing English F and H. Letters B and P – character variations on the letter H – are very soft compared to English and barely aspirated. Consonant clusters in Japanese are extremely rare. Those that appear in this piece are limited to tsu and shi – tsu is pronounced by pronouncing a light “t” before “su” as though saying “hot soot.” Shi is pronounced like the pronoun “she.” Vowels are of the one-letter, one-sound variety (with, again, a few exceptions below) with diphthongs being extremely rare (and not present in this work), and can be regarded thus by speakers of Standard American English: A – between father and aloha E – like beg, but closer to the front of the mouth I – like key or steel, except closer to the front and top of the mouth O – like toll or cobra, and quite rounded U – similar to new, except no rounding at the end; similar to French mousse but slightly more rounded Notes continue:

The E in “tatoen” should be closer to a schwa in pronunciation; it should also be lightly aspirated.

2.

The word “yamabiko” is troublesome: an irregular pronunciation, the closest approximation is ya*ma*shko.

3.

The first U in “kotauru” should be lightly aspirated.

4.

The first I in “munashiki” should barely be voiced, as in colloquial Japanese this sound may be suppressed. In performance, it should be less nasal than the final I in the word.

5.

In “tohoto,” the H is barely aspirated.

6.

All G’s in Japanese transliteration are like hard American G’s: gas, gutter, gate.

7.

The second I in “kikitsureba” is often suppressed in spoken Japanese; here, it should be less nasal, more rounded, than the first. Also observe rules regarding letters H, B, and P.

8.

All P’s in “apiomopu” should more closely resemble soft B’s.

9.

All syllables are enunciated; some Japanese words (suru, Fukushima) suppress U’s in colloquial speech.

10. The W in “masurawo” is barely pronounced. 11. “Shite” is pronounced “shteh,” making it one syllable. The I is suppressed. 12. As in note #1, the “e” in “tatoemu” should be just lightly aspirated. 13. In performance, the word “kogiinishi” is treated as “kogi ‘nishi;” in pronunciation, there would be little to no differentiation between the first two I’s in the word. 14. See previous comments about pronouncing the letter F. Also, the E at the end of “fune” should be slightly flattened.
