PROGRAMME NOTE The Day Dawn is based on an old Shetland fiddle tune of the same name, which was traditionally played at the Winter Solstice to mark the dawn of lengthening days. Dedicated to my friend Christine McKemmie Jamieson, who was living in Shetland when her young daughter died, the piece recalls the sense of calm she felt on the day of the funeral - dawning bright after a week of rain. In the original version, commissioned by Contemporary Music Making for Amateurs, its eleven parts may be played by any combination of stringed instruments. At the instigation of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the composer has since made an elaborated version for professional forces, which still, however, stays within the boundaries of the seven "white" notes of the scale. The work was commissioned by Contemporary Music Making for Amateurs with the generous support of the Arts Councils of England and Scotland.
PERFORMANCE NOTES This piece is written to be as flexible as possible according to the forces available.
It is in eleven parts as follows: UPPER 1 UPPER 2 UPPER 3 MIDDLE 1 MIDDLE 2 MIDDLE 3 LOWER 1 LOWER 2 LOWER 3 LOWER 4 BASS
violin violin (may be doubled on viola, dropping out where necessary) * violin and/or viola violin and/or viola viola (may be doubled on violin or violoncello, dropping out where necessary) * viola and/or violoncello viola and/or violonello violoncello (may be doubled on viola, dropping out where necessary) * violoncello violoncello; if no double bass, this becomes the bass line and more cellos may be added for strength. double bass if available
At least two players per part wherever possible, except double bass where one player is sufficient, but instruments may be mixed as desired. * These doublings should be used if unavoidable.
