( TOWARDS A REGENERATIVE APPROACH )

DISSERTATION

https://www.academia.edu/s/08f0489a98

Our cities today are rapidly urbanizing and, in this rut, to keep building huge massive structures the urbanization has taken a toll on our environment thus deteriorating our surrounding and our health in the long run, as a result we have somewhat disconnected ourselves from the true beauty and functions that the nature offers us, which was initially not the case, both nature and architecture have co evolved but the beginning of urbanization started pushing the two apart into categories of ‘built mass’ and the ‘nature’ surrounding it. The idea is to understand why cannot both of these ‘coexist’ why cannot there be a building that makes oxygen, fixes the nitrogen, reduces carbon, purifies water, replenishes soil, uses solar energy as fuel, produces complex food, changes colours with the seasons and self-replicates it by using nature as a model and a mentor, not as an inconvenience. The idea is to incorporate biomimicry techniques to help make regenerative architecture and not end our exploration to sustainability i.e. looking at buildings as closed loops and not just making it sustainable during its life but also after it and not just using the resources efficiently but also exploring if these can be regenerated and given back during the cycle completed by the building, thus seeing if biomimicry can be a way forward for sustainability.
