Located just two hours north of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, a visit to Muskoka is like being transported to a different place and time. The region’s endless rocky backdrop of exposed granite – known as the Canadian Shield –

Discover Muskoka National Geographic’s Best Of The World – Must-See Places. The region’s beginnings as a modern day vacation destination can in fact be traced back to the mid-1800s with the arrival of thousands of immigrants from Europe. Lured by the promise of free land, they tried their best to farm the land, an all but impossible task due to the ever-present Canadian Shield. Some of the savvier settlers, however, made the best of things, encouraging sportsmen from Toronto and the US to travel north to hunt and fish. For almost 150 years Muskoka’s been one of Canada’s top tourist destinations, keeping pace with ever-evolving demands as people’s travel habits change. Since the region’s early beginnings as a hunting and fishing destination, Muskoka has consistently topped the list of the very best places in the world to spend vacation time. Discover Muskoka Endless Miles Of Water Lure Adventurers. Comprising more than 600 sparkling lakes along with 14,000 kms of shoreline – not to mention countless rivers and waterfalls – Muskoka is a paradise for water enthusiasts. Watercraft of all shapes and sizes scurry across Muskoka’s endless waterways, whether classic wooden motorboats, powerboats or sailing vessels, as well people-powered craft like canoes and kayaks. To satisfy the demand for the casual boater, the region’s many marinas provide rentals and tours, as well as boater licenses and training. When it comes to exploring Muskoka by water, the region’s bigger lakes – Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph, along with Lake of Bays and Lakes Peninsula, Fairy and Mary – are all easily accessible. All are perfect for day-trips or even weekend getaways by boat, with plenty of places to dock for a meal or a spot of sightseeing. Muskoka’s lakes are also popular for wakeboarding and waterskiing, as well as for extreme water sports like knee boarding or parasailing. Another great way to enjoy Muskoka is aboard a cruise vessel. The best known is the Royal Mail Ship Segwun, North America’s oldest still operating steamship. RMS Segwun offers short sightseeing tours, longer lunch and dinner cruises, and even overnight adventures including accommodations at an historic resort. Three other vessels offering excursions on Lake Muskoka are the

300-passenger Lady Muskoka, and Sunset Cruise’s two historic vessels: the decades old Peerless II, a 45 passenger vessel and her sister ship, the elegant 12-passenger M.V. Idyllwood. These classic vessels are available for charters for special occasions such as weddings and family reunions.

Equally popular are cruises around the spectacular 30,000 Islands on Georgian Bay aboard the Island Queen out of Parry Sound, and many smaller vessels provide cozy cruises aboard pontoon boats, classic wooden launches or vintage yachts on the Muskoka Lakes. Fisher-folk, too, won’t lack for great reasons to head north to Muskoka. Whether you prefer lake or river fishing – even ice fishing or fly-fishing – cottage country offers first rate angling experiences. Muskoka’s fish, including bass, trout and pike, are so abundant that even the least experienced fishermen won’t go home empty handed.

Magnificent Metal – Muskoka Artist Sculpts Wildlife Out Of Steel. Muskoka has long been home to creative types. From artists to writers and all stops in between, the region and its stunning beauty has proven both a draw and an inspiration to people with an artistic streak ever since those first intrepid travellers visited over 150 years ago. One of the most fascinating of Muskoka’s current crop of artists is sculptor Hilary Clark Cole. A resident of the region since 1971, Clark Cole’s spectacular metal sculptures grace many private collections, as well as public and corporate locations both in Canada and overseas. From her realistic life-size depictions of wolves, bears and moose – magnificent creatures made all the more real by the weathered, rusty finish provided courtesy of mother nature – to three-dimensional depictions of everything from people to trees and flowers, Clark Cole’s work is a celebration of a deep-rooted connection to the environment around her. Working predominantly in hand built welded steel, as well as in cast limited edition bronzes, her unique metal sculptures come in all shapes and sizes, and cover all manner of subject matter – a fact that allows Clark Cole to include, on occasion, a variety of different metals in addition to the predominant steel, including copper and brass. One of Clark Cole’s most spectacular works – and one of her most recent – is an incredibly detailed full-size Muskox. Taking a year and a half to complete, this piece weighs in at a hefty 1600lbs.

Discover Muskoka Muskoka Chautauqua. Whether you’re a literary buff, music lover or just enjoy good conversation, Muskoka Chautauqua’s Signature Event is not to be missed. Held annually, this exciting threeday event includes talks and interviews with big-name (and local) authors, musical and dramatic performances, poetry readings, and presentations from young participants from the group’s arts in education programs. The theme for 2013 (May 31st - June 2nd) encompasses “Humour, Health and Happiness” and will again be hosted by TVO’s Steve Paikin. This year’s event will be held in the heart of the historic and lively community of Port Carling, with events occurring in different venues throughout the village. Muskoka Chautauqua is an arts and learning organization providing year-round creative, multi-disciplinary arts-based programming for entertainment, life-long learning and community engagement. In Muskoka during the 1920s and 30s, summer-long Chautauqua assemblies were held on Tobin Island, Lake Muskoka, where some of Canada’s literary greats of the time spoke, earning the group the title of “Canada’s Literary Summer Capital”. Small Town Feel – Muskoka’s Communities Charm Their Guests. Nestled amidst its never-ending forests and perched on the shores of its pristine lakes, Muskoka’s exciting small towns and communities all have something special to offer vacationers. In all, this vast region boasts 17 towns and villages, each with its own distinctive flavour, each unmistakably Muskoka and each just waiting to be explored. Port Carling is a great place to start your small town Muskoka adventure. Situated between lakes Muskoka and Joseph, this picturesque two-time winner of Canada’s Communities in Bloom community is as popular with cottagers as it is with day-trippers and resort guests. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger as you take in the busy locks – especially when the historic RMS Segwun passes through – and eclectic stores, galleries and eateries along its long, always busy main street. Over on the north western tip of Lake Muskoka, Bala, too, has many art studios and galleries, including Iroquois Artisans, a unique gallery devoted to works by First Nations artists. Bala is also famous for its ever-popular Cranberry Festival, a celebration of the

wonderful fruit that draws crowds each fall from across Ontario. A little further east sit the hamlets of Honey Harbour, MacTier and Port Severn located on the edge of Georgian Bay and its 30,000 islands. It’s extremely easy to take in more than one Muskokan community in a day, regardless of the season. Why not visit in the fall and spend a day visiting places like Baysville, Dorset and Dwight as you take in the spectacular colours and don’t forget winter. As part of its ongoing efforts to protect the resort’s natural surroundings, Foxwood has committed to practice a number of earth friendly policies, including 11

Severn Lodge – A Historic Cottage Resort In Muskoka. Severn Lodge dates back to the mid-1800’s when it served as the location for the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. When the logging era concluded, the location was purchased by a group representing a private club from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania known as the Mordolphton Club.

The Mordolphtons arrived by private Pullman coach to the CNR train station in Waubaushene on Georgian Bay where their luggage was transferred to an awaiting steam ship which took them to Port Severn. From there they portaged over the waterfalls and rapids to an awaiting boat for the final leg of their journey to the northern shores of Gloucester Pool. What takes approximately 15 minutes today by car, took nearly a half day by boat.

Members of the Mordolphtons visited during the summers for many years, being attracted to the fine fishing that could be had in the pristine waters of Gloucester Pool. Then, in the early 1920’s the property was purchased by Glen Crummel and George Barrick of Akron, Ohio. They named it Severn Lodge, and opened it to the public.

In 1928 William H. “Bill” Breckbill, then a high school student from Canton, Ohio, began working summers at the Lodge. His life-long love affair with Severn Lodge had now begun. Returning each summer, he eventually became the manager, and then

purchased it in the fall of 1936. In 1940 he married Jeanne E. Krammes. In 1973 their son Ron joined the family business, and later married Cindee. In 1977 their other son Rick and his wife Sue joined the business.

During the early years, guests arrived by train and steamer, but as time passed and the road systems were developed, guests could drive to Port Severn. From here our launch would take them on a 45 minute boat ride to the Lodge. Pick-ups were at 11 am and 5 pm. Some times, there were so many guests arriving that a second launch was taken to Port Severn just for their luggage.

In the early 1960’s Hwy 69 (Hwy 400 today) and the White’s Falls were built allowing guests to drive even closer. Since White’s Falls was only 10 minutes by boat, our launch made more frequent pickups. In the fall of 1983 the White’s Falls Rd was extended to the Big Chute giving the resort road access. The start of a new era had come!

Discover Muskoka Clevelands House Renewal Continues Muskoka Tradition Of Excellence. A funny thing happened on the way to the printers when Charles Minett opened his resort in Muskoka in 1883. Asked to label the resort’s first guest register “Cleeve Lands” after Minett’s birthplace in England, the printer inadvertently changed the name to Clevelands. Courses Offer Unique Steam Train Experience

Casey Jones, eat your heart out! Visitors to Muskoka now have an exciting opportunity to fulfill that childhood fantasy of driving a steam train of their very own… at least for a day. This unique opportunity to be an engineer takes place at Muskoka Heritage Place in Huntsville aboard the historic 1926 Portage Flyer steam locomotive (or, alternatively, a 1949 diesel electric locomotive), once part of the world’s shortest commercial railway operating between North and South Portage near Dwight from 1904 and 1959. Participants in the Engineer for a Day program receive full training aboard the historic engine, learning everything from engineer procedures to railway protocol to handling the controls. All would-be engineers are required to first pass a pre-screening interview, as well as a written exam (study materials are supplied in advance) before receiving professional practical instruction and learning the ropes. The big day begins at 9 am with an orientation session followed by the exam. Once that’s done, the real fun starts when your certified engineer instructor allows you to take the controls – before you know, it you’ll be chugging along with a train full of passengers in tow. The whole awesome experience wraps up at 4 pm, by which time you’ll be more than a little sad your time as an engineer has come to an end. The cost for the day-long course is $200, and participants must be at least 16 years of age. Muskoka Heritage Place’s rail season runs from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, and registration opens on March 14th (Casey Jones’ birthday).

Muskoka Has It All Muskoka – a rare gem in the Canadian landscape with its indicolite blue lakes and uvarovite green towering pines, supported by the vast Canadian Shield with its outcroppings of hardened grey and red granite. Muskoka reaches from the crystal blue waters and rugged islands of Georgian Bay on Muskoka’s west coast to the forest covered terrain of Algonquin Park on its northeastern point and then from the Severn River which bounds Muskoka’s southern extremity to its rolling highlands landscape to the north. Covering an area of 4761 sq km and dotted with 600 lakes, it has six municipalities comprised of a number of towns and villages which make up the tapestry of Muskoka. Muskoka has been recognized as an vacation destination for 150 years playing host to thousands of outdoorsmen, hunters, fisherman, social clubs, cottagers and resort goers. By the late 1800’s Muskoka had evolved to become the place to go to be pampered by the staff at one of its 80 many fine 28

Even the most cursory of glances at their work leaves little doubt that they were all greatly affected by Georgian Bay’s stunning vistas, crooked pines and endless rock. Muskoka’s Gateway – All Roads Lead to Gravenhurst Best known as the ‘Gateway to Muskoka’ – there’s even an archway to prove it – Gravenhurst is the first of Muskoka’s big three towns you’ll want to explore. Not only is it the first community you’ll come across when entering the region from the south, it’s also home to one of the liveliest waterfronts… well, make that two waterfronts. Gull Lake Park is a popular family gathering spot due to its safe beach and safe swimming, as well as for its excellent Sunday evening Music on the Barge program. Now in its 54th year, musicians perform everything from the big band swing sound to jazz, folk, and classic rock from a specially designed stage suspended over the water just a few yards off shore. Across town, Muskoka Wharf with its’ meandering board walk by the restaurants, retail stores and the museum all along the shores of Lake Muskoka is a wonderful way to pass the day. The wharf is also the home port of the RMS Segwun, the oldest steamship still operating in North America. The Segwun and its sister ship Wenonah II, offer some of

the best views of Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph. The steam-theme is very much in evidence throughout the Wharf, from the architecture to the steamship themed playground. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre. This year-round celebration of Gravenhurst’s rich boat building history contains numerous displays of sleek mahogany launches in slips at the museum docks. The Wharf, along with its 615 metre long boardwalk, is a focal point for a number of other great events including the Gravenhurst Farmers Market, the Antique and Classic Boat Show, Ribfest and the Dockside Festival of the Arts. Gravenhurst also just so happens to be the birthplace of humanitarian Dr. Norman Bethune, and the house in which he was born is now a national historic site and museum. Another heritage building to visit is the Gravenhurst Opera House. Built in 1901, this majestic building graces the community’s uptown shopping area and is a venue for both musical and theatrical events throughout the year. 33

The “Big Three” Lakes – Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph Whether you visit the Township of Muskoka Lakes for a leisurely day-long car trip or spend weeks listening to loons at a cottage or a lodge, you will never forget the experience. Lakes Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau offer breath-taking vistas of scenery that cry out for your camera. Antique shops, restaurants and special attractions compete for your attention. One of the best kept secrets about Muskoka is that Lucy Maud Montgomery, beloved author of “Anne of Green Gables”, loved its rivers, its lakes and its pines. She based one of her best books called “The Blue Castle”, upon a two-week holiday at a Bala lodge in 1922, setting the love story in Muskoka rather than Prince Edward Island. Bala’s Museum with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery, which tells the story behind “The Blue Castle”, has attracted well over 100,000 visitors from every corner of the globe since it opened in July, 1992. The Township of Muskoka Lakes has many other surprises, including the annual Cranberry Festival in Bala each 36

October, walking trails, artists’ studios, cranberry marshes, the Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling, antique and craft shows and postcard scenery. You can disappear into Hardy Lake Park for half an hour or a whole afternoon to hike its nature trails. Bala, known far and wide as Ontario’s cranberry capital, is well worth visiting. Families can picnic and relax beside its falls, looking down the Moon River. The world’s best dance bands, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Guy Lombardo, once came here to Dunn’s Pavilion which is now the Kee to Bala, offering concerts through the summer. A newly created theatre company attracts patrons from as far away as Toronto. Meanwhile, just outside of town are two cranberry marshes. Port Carling, which prides itself on being “the hub of the lakes”, links Lakes Muskoka and Rosseau through historic locks where you can see a regular parade of pleasure craft and larger cruisers. If you’re lucky, you may even see the R.M.S. Segwun or one of the many cruise boats passing from one lake to the other. Not far from Port Carling are a series of villages with their own attractions and special features, including Glen Orchard, Minett, Windermere and Milford Bay which are all worth a visit.

Muskoka’s Cultural Capital – Huntsville celebrates the arts with numerous festivals Muskoka’s largest municipality may also be its liveliest.
