[Sunan al-Nas a'i, 1641] «...‫ وﻻ ﺻﺎم ﺷﮫﺮا‬، ‫ وﻻ ﻗﺎم ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ﻛﺎﻣﻠﺔ ﺣﺘﻰ ا ﻟﺼﺒﺎح‬، ‫وﻻ أﻋﻠﻢ أ ن ﻧﺒﻲ ﷲ ﻗﺮأ ا ﻟﻘﺮآ ن ﻛﻠﻪ ﻓﻲ ﻟﯿﻠﺔ‬ ‫»ﻛﺎﻣﻼ ﻏﯿﺮ رﻣﻀﺎ ن‬ ‫ﺳﻨﻦ ا ﻟﻨﺴﺎﺋﻲ‬ The words "s t ay up at night " may me an t hat he s pe nt mos t of t he night in wors hip, or t hat he did not s t ay up for t he e nt ire night , but he did t hat at t he t ime s of 'Is ha' and Suhur, and ot he r t ime s , in which cas e it would me an t hat he s t aye d up for mos t of t he night . It is known t hat he (pe ace be upon him) us e d t o wake his wive s all ye ar round, but he us e d t o wake t he m t o s pe nd part of t he night in qiyam. In Sahih al-Bukhari it is re port e d t hat t he Prophe t (pe ace be upon him) woke up one night and s aid, "Subhan Allah! What t ribulat ions have come down t onight ! What t re as ure has come down t onight ! Who will wake up t he dwe lle rs of t he apart me nt s ? The re may be wome n who are clot he d in t his world and nake d in t he He re aft e r." The fact t hat he (pe ace be upon him) did t his indicat e s t he import ance he at t ache d t o wors hipping his Lord and making t he mos t of t his s pe cial t ime . The Mus lim s hould follow t he e xample of t he Prophe t (pe ace be upon him) for he is t he be s t e xample , and he s hould s t rive hard in wors hipping Allah. He s hould not was t e t he hours of t he s e days and night s . For we do not know, pe rhaps t his t ime will ne ve r come again, for t he s poile r of ple as ure s , i.e ., de at h, which mus t come t o all me n, may come and s nat ch him and his life will e nd; t he n he will fe e l re gre t at t he t ime whe n re gre t will be of no avail. Ve rily, We are e ve r s e nding (t he Me s s e nge rs ), (5) (As ) a Me rcy from your Lord. Ve rily! It was re port e d from a group of t he companions of t he prophe t (pe ace be upon him) Salaf - including Ibn 'Abbas , Qut adah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, 'Ikrimah, Mujahid and ot he rs - t hat t he night on which t he Quran was s e nt down was Laylat al-Qadr. doome d, who will be de s t ine d for Paradis e , who will be de s t ine d for He ll, who will be grant e d honor, who will be humiliat e d, whe re drought and famine will occur, and e ve ryt hing e ls e t hat Allah wills in t hat ye ar. What is me ant by t he ide a t hat t he de s t iny of all cre at ure s is writ t e n on Laylat al-Qadr is - and Allah knows be s t - t hat on Laylat al-Qadr t he y are t rans fe rre d from al-Lawh al-Mahfooz. Ibn 'Abbas s aid: "You may s e e a man furnis hing his home or plowing his fie ld, and he is one of t hos e who are going t o die ," i.e ., it has be e n de cre e d on Laylat al-Qadr t hat he is one of t hos e who are going t o die (in t he coming ye ar). And it was s aid t hat on t his night , t he de s t iny of pe ople is s hown t o t he ange ls . The me aning of "Qadr" is ve ne rat ion or honor, i.e . it is a night t hat is ve ne rat e d be caus e of it s s pe cial charact e ris t ics , and be caus e t he one who s t ays up during t his night be come s a man of honor. And it was s aid t hat Qadr me ans cons t rict ion, in t he s e ns e t hat t he knowle dge of pre cis e ly whe n t his night is , is hidde n. Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad s aid: it was calle d Laylat al-Qadr be caus e t he e art h is cons t rict e d by t he gre at numbe rs of ange ls on t hat night , and Qadr me ans cons t rict ion. Allah s ays (int e rpre t at ion of t he me aning): “But whe n He t rie s him, by s t rait e ning his me ans of life , he s ays : "My Lord has humiliat e d me !"” [Al-Fajr 89:16], i.e ., by cons t rict ing or re ducing his provis ion. َ َ {‫ھﺎﻧ َِﻦ‬ َ ‫} َوأﱠﻣﺎ ِإَذا َﻣﺎ اْﺑَﺘَﻼ ُه َﻓَﻘَﺪَر َﻋَﻠْﯿِﻪ ِرْز َﻗُﻪ َﻓَﯿُﻘﻮُل َرﺑﻲ أ‬ 16 :‫ﱢا ﻟﻔﺠﺮ‬ Trans literation: Waamma it ha ma ibt alahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbe e ahanani PDFmyURL.com


And it was s aid t hat Qadr me ans Qadar, i.e ., t hat on t his night t he de cre e s for t he coming ye ar are ordaine d, as Allah s ays (int e rpre t at ion of t he me aning): “The re in (t hat night ) is de cre e d e ve ry mat t e r of ordainme nt s ” [Ad-Dukhaan 44:4] َ ‫ﱡ‬ ُ ‫} ِﻓﯿَﮫﺎ ﻳ ُْﻔَﺮ‬ {‫ﺣ ِﻜﯿٍﻢ‬ َ ‫ق ُﻛ ﻞ أْﻣٍﺮ‬ 4 :‫ا ﻟﺪ ﺧﺎ ن‬ Trans literation: Fe e ha yufraqu kullu amrin hake e min And be caus e Allah's de cre e s are de cide d and writ t e n down on t his night . So Allah has calle d it Laylat al-Qadr, be caus e of it s gre at value and high s t at us wit h Allah, and be caus e s o many s ins are forgive n and s o many fault s are conce ale d during t his night . For it is t he night of forgive ne s s , as it was re port e d in al-Sahihayn from Abu Hurayrah t hat t he Prophe t (pe ace be upon him) s aid: "Whoe ve r s t ays up during Laylat al-Qadr out of fait h and in t he hope of e arning re ward, all his pre vious s ins will be forgive n." [Se e Tafs ir Ibn Kat hir, 4/531] The Spirit [al-Ruh] is Jibril (pe ace be upon him) who is s pe cifically me nt ione d in t his manne r as a s ign of re s pe ct for him. This night is de s cribe d as pe ace , i.e ., it is s afe , for t he Shayt an cannot do any e vil or caus e any harm on t his night , as Mujahid s aid. [Se e Tafs ir Ibn Kat hir, 4/531] . Kat hir, 4/137, 138] All of t his is alre ady known t o Allah be fore it is e ve n writ t e n down, but He make s known t o t he ange ls what is t o happe n, and commands t he m t o do what e ve r t he y are e njoine d t o do. [Sharh Sahih Mus lim li'l-Nawawi, 8/57] Allah forgive s t he pre vious s ins of t he one who s t ays up and prays during t his night out of fait h and in hope of e arning t he re ward from Him. It was re port e d in t he hadit h of Abu Hurairah t hat t he Prophe t (pe ace be upon him) s aid: "Whoe ve r fas t s t he mont h of Ramadan out of fait h and in t he hope of e arning re ward, all his pre vious s ins will be forgive n, and whoe ve r s t ays up during Laylat al-Qadr out of fait h and in t he hope of e arning re ward, all his pre vious s ins will be forgive n." [Agre e d upon] « ‫ ﻏﻔﺮ ﻟﻪ ﻣﺎ ﺗﻘﺪم ﻣﻦ ذﻧﺒﻪ‬، ‫» ﻣﻦ ﻗﺎم ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ا ﻟﻘﺪر إﻳﻤﺎﻧﺎ وا ﺣﺘﺴﺎﺑﺎ‬ ‫ﻣﺘﻔﻖ ﻋﻠﯿﻪ‬ The phras e "out of fait h and in t he hope of e arning re ward" me ans , be lie ving in Allah's promis e of re ward for t his , and s e e king t he re ward, wit h no ot he r aim or purpos e , s uch as s howing off e t c." [Fat h al-Bari, 4/251] Allah has re ve ale d a s urah conce rning t his night which will be re cit e d unt il t he Day of Re s urre ct ion, in which He me nt ions t he honor and gre at value of t his night . This is t he s urah in which He s ays (int e rpre t at ion of t he me aning): “Ve rily! [Narrat e d by Mus lim 2/268] « ‫ ﻣﻦ ﻳﻘﻢ ا ﻟﺤﻮل ﻳﺼﺐ‬: ‫ إ ن أ ﺧﺎ ك اﺑﻦ ﻣﺴﻌﻮد ﻳﻘﻮل‬: ‫ ﻓﻘﻠﺖ‬،‫ﺳﺄ ﻟﺖ أﺑﻲ ﺑﻦ ﻛﻌﺐ رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ‬ ‫ وأﻧﮫﺎ ﻓﻲ‬. ‫ أﻣﺎ إﻧﻪ ﻗﺪ ﻋﻠﻢ أﻧﮫﺎ ﻓﻲ رﻣﻀﺎ ن‬. ‫ ر ﺣﻤﻪ ﷲ ! أراد أ ن ﻻ ﻳﺘ ﻜ ﻞ ا ﻟﻨﺎس‬: ‫ ﻓﻘﺎل‬. ‫ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ا ﻟﻘﺪر‬ ‫ ﻓﻘﻠﺖ‬. ‫ أﻧﮫﺎ ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ﺳﺒﻊ وﻋﺸﺮﻳﻦ‬. ‫ ﺛﻢ ﺣﻠ ﻒ ﻻ ﻳﺴﺘﺜﻨﻰ‬. ‫ وأﻧﮫﺎ ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ﺳﺒﻊ وﻋﺸﺮﻳﻦ‬. ‫ا ﻟﻌﺸﺮ اﻷوا ﺧﺮ‬ ‫ أو ﺑﺎﻵﻳﺔ ا ﻟﺘﻲ أ ﺧﺒﺮﻧﺎ رﺳﻮل ﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﷲ‬، ‫ ﺑﺎ ﻟﻌﻼﻣﺔ‬: ‫ ﺑﺄي ﺷﻲء ﺗﻘﻮل ذ ﻟﻚ ؟ ﻳﺎ أﺑﺎ ا ﻟﻤﻨﺬر ! ﻗﺎل‬: ‫ ﻻ ﺷﻌﺎع ﻟﮫﺎ‬، ‫»ﻋﻠﯿﻪ وﺳﻠﻢ أﻧﮫﺎ ﺗﻄﻠﻊ ﻳﻮﻣﺌﺬ‬ ‫ر و ا ه ﻣ ﺴ ﻠﻢ‬ Many marfu' ahadit h we re narrat e d which s aid t hat it was on t his part icular night . The fact t hat it is us ually t he night of t he t we nt y-s e ve nt h - and Allah knows be s t - doe s not me an t hat t his is always t he cas e . It could be t he night of t he t we nt y-firs t , as me nt ione d in t he hadit h of Abu Sa'id quot e d above , or it could be t he t we nt y-t hird, as me nt ione d in t he re port of 'Abd-Allah ibn Unays quot e d above . According t o a hadit h narrat e d by Ibn 'Abbas , t he Prophe t (pe ace be upon him) s aid: "Se e k it in t he las t t e n days of Ramadan, whe n t he re are nine days le ft , and s e ve n days le ft , and five days le ft ." [Narrat e d by al-Bukhari, 4/260] « ، ‫ ﻓﻲ ﺳﺎﺑﻌﺔ ﺗﺒﻘﻰ‬، ‫ ﻓﻲ ﺗﺎﺳﻌﺔ ﺗﺒﻘﻰ‬، ‫ ﻟﯿﻠﺔ ا ﻟﻘﺪر‬، ‫ا ﻟﺘﻤﺴﻮھﺎ ﻓﻲ ا ﻟﻌﺸﺮ اﻷوا ﺧﺮ ﻣﻦ رﻣﻀﺎ ن‬ ‫» ﻓﻲ ﺧﺎﻣﺴﺔ ﺗﺒﻘﻰ‬ ‫ر وا ه ا ﻟ ﺒﺨ ﺎ ري‬ Some of t he s cholars t hought t hat it is more like ly t hat Laylat al-Qadr move s and doe s not come on a s pe cific night e ach ye ar. Al-Nawawi s aid: "This is t he appare nt me aning be caus e of t he conflict be t we e n t he Sahih ahadit h on t his mat t e r, and t he re is no way t o re concile t he ahadit h apart from s aying t hat Laylat al-Qadr move s ."
