HE WHO KNOWS HIMSELF, KNOWS GOD. (ḤADĪTH)

8

MINDFULNESS (MURĀQABA) God created humans for a specific purpose: so that they serve him (51:56) and do good deeds on this earth (3:148). However, from the Quran we know that our lower driving spirit often dictates the bad (12:53) and therefore works against God‘s pleasure. As a result, the human-being should understand this world as a chance to improve one`s own character traits according to the role model of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and to seek and achieve God‘s pleasure. In exchange, being mindful is described as (murāqaba) by the scholars and regarded as very important . Regarding this matter, the Prophet (pbuh) said : „Take account of yourself before you’re taken account of.“ While we deal with our actions with mindfulness, we should not forget that God also watches over our actions (89:14). On judgement day all of our deeds will be asked three questions 1. Why did you do it? 2. How did you do it? 3. For whom did you do it? You can use the Murāqaba part of the planner to recall your previous and furture deeds with these questions.

STATEMENT OF INTENT (NIYYA) „Actions are by intentions.“ This is how the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) expressed it at one time. In order to receive God‘s pleasure it is important to grasp our intentions. After you have become aware of your previous and current actions, you can start asking youself the question what you would like to do and change in the near future. At the same time, the following questions are essential:Warum möchte ich etwas erreichen/ändern? 1. Why do I want to achieve/change something? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages? 3. What do I have to do to implement my intentions? You can use the Niyya part of the calendar in order to always recall these questions when making your future plans regarding the individual areas of life or your weekly to-do-list.

YOUR LIFE-COACH RECOMMENDS VOLUNTEER WORK Helping others is the fastest and easiest way to make yourself happy. Humanbeings are not created just to take care of themselves- and this is something we instinctively feel. We want to actively shape something that is greater and more important than ourselves. HEALTH As long as it doesn‘t hurt, we like to take our health for granted and therefore tend to take less care of our body. This is something we want to do „ when we have time for it“- which means never. Take one thing at a time: Two minutes just for the tooth floss in the evenings or five minutes for sit-ups in the mornings. Bake a sugar-free cake every Sunday for the whole week or take a daily walk, such as the path you take to work. One small deed for yourself and your body. You both deserve it! Always (even on the weekends) try to get up and go to bed around the same time . A more regular rhythm in doing things is not only good and important for children but benefits everyone. This becomes clear with the five fixed daily prayers. These help you have more structure and energy for the entire day.

30

KREATIVITY – ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY Try to practice the letters with a Sharpie marker (3.5 mm) on a glossy sheet of paper (flyer paper). Once you have practiced the letters, you can eternalize it on one of the notes pages at the end of your planner.

THE GREAT MOSQUE IN CORDOBA

Cordoba, Spain (167/784)

42

The building of the Great Mosque in Cordoba, also known as La Mezquita in Spanish, started under the reign of Emir Abd al-Rahman I. in 784 after Christ and took over twohundred years to be completed. During this time period the mosque was subject to several changes and expansions. The last expansion was implemented approximately 987 after Christ. The building itself, which is famous for its numerous pillars and huge arcs, flaunts with a magnificent

maqsura that the Caliph al-Hakim requested during the 10th century and needed several years to complete. The mosque imitates the architectural styles from the Syrian Umayyadens (661-750) and the early Abbasids in Iraq (750-1258), who overthrew the Caliph of Umayyad. The rectangular-shaped prayer halls and the enclosed courtyards are characteristic for this mosque.

YOUR LIFE-COACH RECOMMENDS RELATIONSHIPS Good, warm relationships are one of the main factors for happiness and satisfaction. People who have many supportive relationships with others are healthier, feel they have more balance in their lives and appear more positive. They can also handle strokes of fate better and live longer. You should also use this precious resource by investing in relationships: Call your parents even though you don‘t need anything from them. Wish a friend lots of success for a test that they mentioned during a conversation or surprise your neighbor with a small present. Have lots of fun doing these things! FAMILIY Oftentimes we treat our family and those who we love the most, the worst. They are the ones who always see our face being in a bad mood, they receive no responses or unfriendly responses and have to beg us fifteen times to do something before we actually take care of it. In contrast, those who are foreign to us, we encounter with a smile and a joke and take care of their concerns. Ask yourself: Who are the people who also stand by me during difficult times? Who deserves more my friendliness, help and support? Take a day to do something good, especially for those people. And in everyday life try to show yourself more often from your good side

CREATIVITY – ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY The „Kufic script“ is one of the oldest calligraphic forms of the Arabic script and is named after the city Kufa (Iraq). There is a special form called „square Kufi“ in which the slurs of the Arabic letters are simplified in a way that makes them remain in a square shape. This type of decorative writing is often found in architecture structures in Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan. Do you recognize all of the letters in the salutation „As-Salāmu ʿalaykum“? Try to trace the words!

YOUR LIFE-COACH RECOMMENDS SMARTPHONE Get used to handling your smartphone in a better way. Here are some examples in doing so:

• • • •

Put it away by 9 pm´the latest and do not keep it next to your bed. Do not look at your phone until after you completed your morning routine. Turn off all of the message alerts that are not absolutely necessary. Consciously allow yourself smartphone-free days or at least half days. This is especially possible while you are on vacation or on the weekends.

SELF-EDUCATION It requires a lot of patience, energy and effort to work on one‘s character or to pick up new habits. These are the exactly same things your parents have invested in you, since they have greatly contributed to raising and educating you. You basically just need to take over the „finetuning“ part. Take a minute to thank God and your parents and another minute to forgive your parents in case they have trreated you unfairly or weren‘t good to you. You can be sure they only want the best for you! GETTING THINGS DONE In case you do not feel like doing something and have been procrastinating it for ages, how about trying the following things: Turn it into a game! • Can you get all the plates and cups into the dishwasher? • Can you get groceries for the week within 7 minutes? • Can you get to the fitness studio faster than last week? Make it nice for yourself! • Listen to music or a presentation while dusting. • Talk to a friend on the phone while you sort out the receipts for the tax return. • Buy yourself nice boxes in order to organize your things from the closet. Concentrate on your strengths and use them. This is more effective and brings you further than if you use all the time you have to struggle with your weeknesses!
