Treat your taste buds at Mussiene Eloise Walton
Mussiene is the brainchild of Head Chef David with the support of his partner Tania, who is completing a doctorate in psychology. The restaurant itself is named after a local Moorish castle, which folklore has it was called Mussiene. Its concept is to provide clients with a dining experience, comprised of fresh local produce prepared with new culinary techniques in a Mediterranean and French style of cuisine. To add interest and ensure that meals are produced with seasonal products, Chef David
This week, Good Food reviews Mussiene, a delightful restaurant with five star quality food, excellent service and very reasonable prices located near the town of Messines. changes the menu every three months as well as organising regular wine dinners and taster menus. On 27 May, Mussiene held one of its wine dinners in cooperation with the Algoz-based wine producer João Clara . The restaurant was fully booked with both Portuguese and foreign residents who have discovered its delights and kept the atmosphere buzzing with jovial conversations. The menu included a four course meal as well as a couvert of fresh rustic bread and home made pâtés. This was followed

by beautifully presented skewered mussels with bacon on a bed of Algarvean salad with roasted peppers served with chilled João Clara Rosé 2010 to whet the apetite. This was followed by a colourful and flavoursome tiger prawn cocktail with exotic fruit accompanied by João Clara Branco 2010. The main course was roast kid (locally reared) on baked potatoes and sautéed vegetables served with a full bodied João Clara Tinto 2009. Finally, the meal was complete with a homemade Algarvean goat’s cheese and honey ice cream with crispy filo pastry and strawberry sauce served with a generous glass of Porto Krohn Lágrima Branco Doce. Simply describing the meal does not do it justice. Not a single fault could be found as the Mussiene team served the most delightful meal I have eaten in a long time. As well as being cooked to perfection and beautifully served (at the right temperatures), the waiting staff were always on hand to
Skewered mussels with bacon on a bed of Algarvean salad with roasted peppers refill glasses with the correct wine for each course, so that guests were neither left thirsty or with a full glass of the wrong wine. To complete the experience, the walls of the restaurant are currently adorned with black and white photographs of Algarve architecture as part of an exhibition by a local graphic designer and photographer. This is part of the restaurant’s concept, which will feature exhibitions of artists work on a regular basis to inspire diners. Mussiene, which is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, is located at Monte de São José near the town of Messines.
