Best Winery
Tolosa & Edna Valley Michael Collari Both Edna Valley Winery and Tolosa have been voted Cal Poly students’ favorite winery in San Luis Obispo. Located in Edna Valley, these two wineries have set themselves apart from the competition. This is Tolosa’s second year in a row winning for best winery. Tolosa’s connection to San Luis Obispo and the university runs deep. Robin Baggett, a Cal Poly baseball alumnus, is one of the three founders of Tolosa. The other two founders are Jim Kress and Jean Hoefilger. “Due to [our] foundational connection to Cal Poly, Cal Poly and its students receive extra support and recognition from the winery,” said June McIvor, the General Manager of Tolosa Winery.
4 Mustang Media Group
Tolosa has a history of hiring many Cal Poly students for internships, especially during the harvest, and they are also involved with the athletic department at Cal Poly. In the last couple of years, Tolosa has made a real effort when it comes to the quality of their wines and their hospitality, according to McIvor. Making the customer experience as enjoyable as possible is their goal and making great wine is their priority. “We thought it would be fun to check out Edna because it’s so close,” said business administration senior Cayley Allen, who visited Edna Valley recently with her mother and roommates. “None of us had ever been but we consistently have at least three bottles of their Chardonnay in our household at any given time.”
Best Vegan Restaraunt
Bliss Cafe Lauren Hatter
When it comes to finding a healthy and high-quality vegetarian plate in San Luis Obispo, Bliss Cafe is the top pick for college students. The cafe, which is located on Higuera street in downtown San Luis Obispo, has a diverse menu of foods made with fresh, local, and organic ingredients. “Our greatest feature is the quality of our products,” head chef Palaka Sauer said. “We use 90 percent organic and local ingredients and we offer completely vegan plates. We make sure to not mix food products in the kitchen for those who might have food intolerances and we have a wide variety of menu items.” The Bliss Cafe menu offers smoothies, bowls, juices, gluten-free desserts and baked goods, in addition to protein bowls, salads, and sandwiches. The cafe recently changed its menu to include breakfast options, and a soup and salad bar. The extensive options make it the perfect place for anyone to dine. Students can call in an order for pick up or order and pay at a register when they arrive. There is indoor and patio seating available which allows for a perfect quick, casual, and delicious meal option. In addition, Bliss Cafe has a farmers market boot 6 to 9 p.m Thursdays in downtown San Luis Obispo.
Best Thai Restaraunt
Thai Boat Sunny Han
For the third year in a row, Thai Boat has emerged as San Luis Obispo’s Best Thai Food. With its authentic flavors and superb service, Thai Boat is known to create the best experience for every customer. This has made it a strong favorite among both Cal Poly students and the surrounding community. “I go to Thai Boat at least once a week. Sometimes, I go up to three times a week,” Howard Liu, a statistics senior said. Tucked away in a strip mall on Broad Street, Thai Boat serves a variety of traditional Thai food, including Pad Thai, Red Curry, and Tom Yum. Its prices range from $10.99 to $14.35, providing delicious dishes for reasonable prices. “I love the food because you can really taste the quality and care in the food,” business administration senior Jason Lu said. “But the service makes the experience even better. The people are so friendly, so personable, and actually try to create conversation with you.” To experience it all, visit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Occasionally, owners close the restaurant to visit family in Thailand, so customers are advised to check hours by calling (805) 594-1638. Despite the odd hours, Thai Boat is definitely worth trying. “They have the best Thai food and service in San Luis Obispo”, Lu said. “If you want an experience that makes you feel at home, go to Thai Boat.” Thai Boat is located at 3212 Broad St.

Best Sushi
Goshi Sushi Meridith Hirsch
With few authentic Asian food options around the San Luis Obispo area, Goshi is an easy choice for best sushi among Cal Poly students. Students value the authenticity, premium quality, and excellent service they receive when dining at Goshi. Not only is Goshi popular among students but also tourists and locals alike. Goshi is rated 4.5 or higher on reviewer websites such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, and OpenTable.
“
“It is getting harder and harder to find authentic Japanese food, so this place makes me extremely happy. I come here twice a year with my family, and I have never been disappointed,” Ashley [missing proper format: Ashley, major, class standing], a recent visitor of Goshi, stated.
The food is fantastic! Although it is definitely pricey, the portions are very large and can be shared.” Although the restaurant in San Luis Obispo is currently under construction, some students are making plans to eat at Goshi or making the trip to their other location in Paso Robles. The restaurant’s owner and manager couldn’t be reached because they are traveling overseas during construction. If you are looking to visit Goshi in San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles, it is open for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For dinner, Goshi is open 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The San Luis Obispo location is set to re-open in mid-June.

Apothecary Tattoo has been voted Cal Poly students’ favorite tattoo and parlor for the 2018 year. It’s that hipster tattoo and piercing parlor you’ve been searching for. Jake Stockstell and Trever Carter, the two tattoo artists, keep up to date with different forms of art via social media, studying art from around the globe to gain inspiration for their tattoos. “In order to expand my ideas, I use Instagram to study sculptures, stitching, paintings, etc,” Stockstell said. Both Stockstelland Carter make sure to be open-minded in order to cultivate their style of art. Not only do they create artwork on arms, they also like to paint and draw in different mediums in order to practice. When Stockstell was learning to tattoo, he was fortunate to spend his time with several experienced tattoo artists. “Many tattooers, that I’ve either worked with or watched, have been extremely talented, and taught me much of what I’ve learned,” Stockstell said. Not only does Apothecary Tattoo offer tattoo services, but they pierce as well. Piercer Fernando Chavez makes sure that he offers high-quality jewelry to his customers. “Usually, piercings start around $55, and become more expensive if the customer would like to personalize it. We also offer gold, for example, or clusters,” Chavez said. To the right of the front door, many different jewelry options are on display, including colored studs, gold hoops, and even tiny gold bee, lotus flower, spider and om studs. Customers aren’t limited to simply a barbell, hoop, or stud when choosing their piercing jewelry; they can begin with jewelry that they are in love with, instead of having to wait until the piercing is healed to change it. Apothecary customers tend to be repeat clients who are seeking custom tattoos. Stockstell explained customers are mostly referred by other individuals who’ve been tatted at Apothecary. They are mostly appointment-only, but accept walk-ins if they have downtime. Apothecary Tattoo is located at 1166 Higuera St. Call 805-786-4622 to make an appointment.

Best Thrift Shop
Fred and Betty’s Emily Merten
A walk through Fred and Betty’s is a walk through history. Return to the 1920s through the vibrations of a vintage record player. Maybe throw on a striped sweater to soak up the nostalgia of the 1990s. From antiques to steals, this nonprofit thrift store in downtown San Luis Obispo has you covered. Fred and Betty’s once again reigns as Cal Poly students’ choice thrift store, and it serves for a cause. Fred and Betty’s is a nonprofit organization owned by San Luis Obispo Classical Academy, a private school in San Luis Obispo that goes from preschool to high school. “The benefits are obvious,” store manager Sara Lock said. “When you shop at Fred and Betty’s, you reduce and reuse, and you give back to a good cause in the community.” All proceeds benefit education at SLO Classical Academy, which helps keep tuition prices low and
provide healthcare to its teachers. Fred and Betty’s accepts donations during store hours. The store keeps its doors open with help from passionate volunteers, including many San Luis Obispo Classical Academy students looking to give back. Fred and Betty’s also employs Cal Poly students. The store was named in honor of Fred and Betty Campbell, who owned the building for decades, along with many others in the surrounding area downtown. Despite the change in ownership in 2011, the couple still frequents the store weekly. Lock said the store’s student appeal lies in the low prices and store accessibility. The store remains active on social media to stay connected to its customers. In tune with students’ needs, Fred and Betty’s offers the lowest prices in town among other thrift stores. So bask in the nostalgia, indulge a bit. Let Fred and Betty’s take you back. Poly Picks 2018 7
Best Sandwich
High St. Deli Erin Gabel
Cal Poly students have chosen High Street Market and Deli as the best sandwich for another year running, and there is no question why. Huge, delicious, customizable, reasonably priced sandwiches served out of a historical store and deli hit all of the senses. Built in 1927, the deli hit its stride when owner and Cal Poly agricultural business alumnus Randy “Doobie” Coates purchased the business and focused solely on the deli. “I had to clear aisles out of the middle,” Doobie said. ”There was nowhere to sit at all before.” Now there is even a cute outdoor garden to enjoy while eating at the deli. The fan favorite Doobie says is the build-your-own sandwich. The California Turkey for years had been the most popular of the sandwiches from the menu, but in recent years the new guard has chosen the Dutch Punch.
Not only does the deli offer great sandwiches, there are great deals going on daily. From 4:20 p.m. to close, come in for the 420 special – a $6.99 sandwich. High Five Tuesdays reward students with a current ID, and for the 21 and older crowd come in on Wednesdays for a $2.50 draft beer on tap with a purchase of a sandwich. In the near future, look out for High Street Market and Deli on the go. The deli’s refurbished 1956 International milk truck is geared to start catering at special events. A little further down the road, a second location will be on the corner of South Higuera and Tank Farm roads. “We got to rent the Benetti Ranch House, the yellow house on the corner,” Doobie said. “We are really excited, the historic location will be a great fit with our brand.” High Street Market and Deli is located at 350 High St.
“All of the spiciness and the crunch from the bread is exactly what I’m looking for,” agricultural and environmental plant science senior Chris Burd said.

Best Place to be Spoiled by Parents Costco
Rebecca Zimmermann When your parents come to visit you in college it means two things: free meals and free groceries. While you love spending time with them, you have to admit, you really enjoy all the free stuff. As a college student buying groceries on a budget, you shop strategically and buy items that are inexpensive and will last you awhile—Ramen, Skippy peanut butter and cereal to name a few. As much as you would like having fresh produce and specialty foods in your kitchen at all times, these items often don’t make the weekly shopping list because they are too expensive. That’s why you love when your parents come to town. They stock up your fridge and pantry with items you could not afford on your own for free! When students were asked to name the best place to be spoiled by their parents, the response was overwhelmingly Costco. “I love when my parents take me to Costco because I get large quantities of food I normally wouldn’t buy since it’s not my money, plus it lasts a while,” one Cal Poly student said.
“
I love when my mom takes me to Costco because I get to buy the big bottle of coconut oil and not worry about the prices as much” another student said. From these quotes alone it is clear that students love Costco because they sell large items at affordable prices. Costco has everything you need, from non-perishable bulk items to family sized produce bags to toilet paper and even samples. While the nice dinners your parents take you to leave you with lasting memories, the bulk foods leave you with a filled fridge and pantry. Well, at least temporarily.

Best Italian
Giuseppe’s Liliana Flores
Whether you’re looking for contemporary Italian cuisine, a scoop of delicious gelato or a massive slice of pizza, Giuseppe’s is the place to go. They can also be found at their other location in Pismo Beach and even at their booth during the San Luis Obispo Farmers Market Thursdays. Giuseppe’s has been a go-to restaurant for psychology junior Cassidy Newman since she first started at Cal Poly. “It’s one of my favorite places to take family and friends when they come to town,” she said. “I really love sitting on the patio and enjoying the nighttime atmosphere.” From the Aperol spritz to the housemade pastas, Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica transports the relaxed and enchanting atmosphere of Italy right into the heart of San Luis Obispo. The authentic Italian dishes and unique ambience have made Giuseppe’s one of the most beloved restaurants in San Luis Obispo. Best Late - Night Food
Taco Bell
Kate Dehlendorf When it comes to late night food in San Luis Obispo, Taco Bell steals the position for first place. Open until 3 a.m., the Santa Rosa street establishment is the perfect place to fix late night cravings after a wild night.
“
Taco Bell after a long night is heaven,” experience industry management junior Amy Duncan said. “I mean let’s be honest, is there anything better than biting into a cheesy quesadilla after one too many cocktails?” With its bargain meals and cheap deals — like the Dollar Cravings menu and Party Packs — you’ll easily be able to use that spare change in the bottom of your wallet to satisfy your late night munchies. “The atmosphere is lively, the food is cheap, and the menu options are endless. It wouldn’t be a typical weekend in San Luis Obispo without a crunchwrap supreme at midnight,” anthropology junior Emma Wright said. Taco Bell continues to surprise regular visitors by frequently introducing new menu items. Dive into a Doritos Locos Taco that uses a taco shell replicating Doritos chips. Can’t decide between a soft or hard shell taco? Don’t worry. Taco Bell’s Cheesy Gordita Crunch ingeniously combines the two into an undeniably mouth-watering creation. “Honestly, it’s the only way to end the night,” journalism junior Christian Laubacher said. Taco Bell is located at 397 Santa Rosa Street.

It’s constantly making me learn.” While Wolf loves to learn from his students, he also has quite a bit to offer them. He can now recount his insightful times abroad as he explains what he has learned from his experiences to his students, inspiring them to follow in his world-traveling footsteps.

Blaze also accommodates many different diets with options such as gluten-free crust and vegan cheese. “Blaze is probably one of the best vegan options in San Luis Obispo,” architecture senior Leesa Choy said. “I usually get the build-your-own pizza. They let you get unlimited toppings which is good because I usually want pretty much everything.” The Blaze experience begins with your choice of crust, then you move down the line to choose sauces, cheeses, and other toppings including meats and veggies. Best PAC Event
TEDx San Luis Obispo Kaitlyn Hoyer
Returning to the Cal Poly campus for a second time, he Performing Arts Center hosted TEDx San Luis Obispo to inspire the San Luis Obispo community through talks about technology, education and design. This year’s event was themed “Climbing New Peaks” and took place center stage on Oct 28, 2017. After the wild success of the previous year’s TEDx event titled, “Plot Twist,” TEDx San Luis Obispo was more ready than ever for “Climbing New Peaks.” “Somehow we pulled it [Plot Twist] off and it was crazy but it was really successful,”lead organizer Ashley White said. “So going into the second event I think we knew we could pull it off and it would be successful.” From breaking world records to innovating prosthetics, TEDx offered a platform for several speakers to share their journeys and how they create and overcome obstacles. Although a wide variety of topics, all speakers focused on one central goal: inspiring others to challenge themselves in a way to make the world a better place.
“
The goal of throwing this event is really to showcase these speakers and how these new ideas can transform the world around us,” White said. TEDx San Luis Obispo, formerly TEDx Cal Poly, is a student run organization that organizes the event. The premise of the TEDx events stem from the mission of the nonprofit organization TED, “ideas worth spreading.” The TEDx team is currently in the process of developing the third event.
Best On - Campus Housing
Poly Canyon Village Brendan Carretero
Poly Canyon Village (PCV) has steadily become a favorite on-campus housing spotever since it first opened back in 2008. PCV is home of nine apartment buildings that are offered to continuing, transfer, and first-year students. In addition to the apartments, PCV offers a wide array of dining options as well to help stand apart from other housing facilities at Cal Poly. In the middle of Village Plaza lies options such as Jamba Juice, Einstein’s Bagels, Canyon Cafe, and a Village Market for grocery needs. Boasting features that include convenient parking structures, live entertainment and other community activities, there is a reason why PCV has been widely regarded as the best on-campus housing spot for several years. “I think it still has to do with the newer nature of it all, it’s the newest one that we've built so far,” Director of residential life and education Juliette Duke said. “I also think the amenities that we offer like the pool, the volleyball courts, the basketball courts, our gym area and music area all help really set it apart, it’s like a little town.” Its towny feel and bonus amenities are not the only positives about PCV. Each apartment contains a full kitchen, living room, two full bathrooms and more. While some may not come with a study room, each floor has its own study room for residents to utilize. “For me PCV offers a lot in terms of the little things that set it apart from Cerro Vista, where I lived last year,” sophomore animal science major Ryan Romero said. “Like the study rooms on each floor, free laundry, and just the fact that it’s a lot more social than other apartments really makes it more fun to live in.” Poly Picks 2018 13
Best Men's Clothing
Urban Outfitters Nick Dockery For the last few years now, Urban Outfitters has been Cal Poly student’s #1 choice for men’s clothing. With their San Luis Obispo store located on Monterey St. Downtown, Cal Poly students have easy access to the all-around clothing and lifestyle chain. Though they specialize in men’s and women’s clothing, they also carry home decor and accessories. Urban Outfitters seems to target a different audience than traditional clothing stores. “For San Luis [Obispo], we are one of the only clothing stores appropriate for college age people,” men’s department manager Matt Bettencourt said.
“
We’re really the only good place in the area for Cal Poly styles.” They carry unique items that other places don’t, like items with Hercules prints and tees featuring rappers like 21 Savage. For items that you won’t find at a Ross or Gap, Urban Outfitters provides exactly what college student guys are looking for. “Yeah, we’re stoked that Cal Poly keeps choosing us as the best Men’s Clothing store. It means a lot,” Bettencourt said. Urban Outfitters is currently holding sales for Memorial Day weekend on shorts and graphic tees. They strive to make innovative new styles affordable for the college crowd, making them a perfectly stylish option for any Cal Poly guy. Urban Outfitters is located at 962 Monterey Street in downtown San Luis Obispo and opens everyday at 10 a.m.

Best Off- Campus Housing
Lee Arms Lea Gikas
Fully furnished apartments, a pristinely manicured yard, arguably the biggest closet in San Luis Obispo and a washer and dryer on site, moving into Lee Arms Apartments is a dream come true for a lucky group of 100 Cal Poly students. Lee Arms Apartments has been a happy home and and a central hub for students since 1978 – and is still only growing in demand. “Living in Lee Arms has been such a great experience. It’s close to campus, has spacious rooms, and there is a great sense of community within the complex,” gushes Sierra Swanson, sophomore, Mechanical Engineering. “I have met so many fun people and I couldn’t imagine spending my sophomore year anywhere else.” Lee Arms Apartment is unique in its design. The apartments are placed in a “U” format, each facing in towards each other. In the middle, there is a big, perfect patch of grass that serves as a hangout spot for tenets. This setup creates an easy environment to meet neighbors and gives Lee Arms the social aspect many students desire. A quick five minute walk from Cal Poly makes Lee Arms even more desirable. Tenets rave about being able to run home between lectures or simply about how they enjoy their beautiful walk to class. Each unit varies in price, however the most common set up is $3000 per month for an average of four tenets. Best Mexican
Taqueria Santa Cruz Express Arran Chahal One can’t help but notice that amid Monterey Street, there is a constant, lively vibe buzzing amidst a small block of restaurants. Most of the commotion stems from Taqueria Santa Cruz Express, where students and locals go to indulge in freshly made Mexican food. For the second year in a row, Cal Poly students insist that Taqueria Santa Cruz is the best place to get Mexican cuisine in San Luis Obispo. Throughout the afternoon, Taqueria Santa Cruz keeps its ceiling-to-floor doors wide open for customers to sit in the patio, enjoy the sunshine and eat delicious food.
rice, warm beans, seasoned potatoes, melted cheese, sour cream, house-made salsa, sliced avocado, and a generous amount of meat. The taqueria is well known for keeping customers full and satisfied by serving up huge portions of food. The complimentary chips-and-salsa bar serves as another reason why repeat customers tend to dine in the local food joint. “My favorite thing about this place is the chips and salsa you get with your food, you always leave full,” civil engineer senior Omar Khan said. Best Movie Theater Fremont
Hallie Magee With its rich history, beautiful architecture and convenient location on Monterey Street, Fremont Theater is a staple of San Luis Obispo. “This building has been here since 1942,” manager Jennings Jacobsen said. “It’s the only representation of an art deco theater in town so it stands out visibly. It looks like what a lot of people see as a movie theater in their minds.” Not only is Fremont a movie theater, but also an entire experience. “When you come and see a movie here you’re not just getting what’s on the screen you’re also getting an environment that kind of sets you into the past. A lot of modern movie theaters it’s more about what’s happening with just the movie,” Jacobsen said. 16 Mustang Media Group
The Fremont experience is the perfect place to come sit back and enjoy a movie or watch a live show. Recently, Fremont has worked to upgrade parts of the venue as the number of live shows continues to increase. Movies will still be shown at the venue, but live shows are becoming the focus. Students have a lot to look forward to in the future as well. “We have lots of upcoming shows and lots of events announced all the time,” Jacobsen said. “There is so much that is coming through here that involves great music that it’s hard not to be excited.” Fremont Theater is located at 1035 Monterey Street.

Best Hike
Bishop Peak Maile McPherson
Chick-fil-A
Bishop Peak is located by the Ferrini Open Space and in the center of many Cal Poly students’ hearts. Bishop Peak is an iconic hike featuring panoramic views of Cal Poly, downtown San Luis Obispo, Laguna Lake, the Santa Lucia Mountains and all that lies in between.
Claudia Lavina Everyone knows the drill: either grab whatever is available, or wait in line as workers fill empty slots with crunchy chicken sandwiches, tasty chicken nuggets, and crisp waffle fries. With outstanding tasting food, affordable prices, and a central location, it’s no wonder that Chick-fil-A is this year’s Poly Picks Best On-Campus Dining.
A couple routes take you to this challenging yet rewarding hike. For a more strenuous trek, start at the end of Foothill Road. For those seeking a more gradual ascent, begin at the end of Patricia Lane or Highland Street. Either way, the hike comes in about 3.5 miles round trip, taking about two hours on average.
Cal Poly’s on-campus Chick-fil-A also happens to be the only Chick-fil-A on in San Luis Obispo County. Located in the Avenue, right in University Union, it’s easily accessible from all areas on campus.
Many choose to tackle this peak at sunrise or sundown. With an astonishing view topping 1,500 feet, early birds can rise above the morning clouds. Those who set out as the sun begins to dip are sure to get some Instagram worthy pictures of one of the best sunsets in the county.
Whether walking to class, making a trip to the library to study, or needing a post rec center workout snack, Chick-fil-A continues to be a campus favorite of Poly students. “It’s pretty affordable, and it tastes so good,” junior business major Ashley Sutter says. “I bought it a lot when I had plus dollars as a freshman, but I still continue to buy it whenever I’m on campus because it’s so good.”
To begin from Highland Drive, pick up the trail on the left side of the cul-de-sac and hike along the wooden fence. Within a quarter mile you will approach a cattle pond. From there, the main trail slopes uphill to a cattle gate then swings left. The trail heads through a shaded forest and passes a popular rock climbing area. From there, it winds around to a rocky mountainside. Switchbacks make for a gently climb to the peak — nothing too difficult.
Prices range from as low as $1 for a biscuit, to $6.79 for a chargrilled chicken club sandwich. Perfect for a broke college student’s budget. Even with a limited menu compared to an off-campus Chick-fil-A’s, students still eat it up. “You can’t go wrong with the original chicken sandwich,” says junior biology major Sydney Perrella. “I’m always craving it, especially on Sundays! It’s the best thing on their menu for sure.” The eatery is closed Sundays. Senior Sammie Spelman disagrees, “The waffle fries are hands down a crowd favorite. You have to get the large size though. More fries to get you through studying.” Chick-fil-A is open early for breakfast at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and open until 11 p.m.

Best Haircut
The Ritual Taylor Powell
This year Cal Poly Students have chosen The Ritual for the best place to get a haircut. “San Luis kind of needs more things for men downtown,” head barber Sammy Mejia said. “We are giving more options to the already great ones we have.” The Ritual currently has five barbers. Sammy Mejia, Christian Contreras, Michael Cavana, Glen Tufuga and Jarret Wininger. These gentlemen all specialize in traditional haircuts and straight razor shaves. “All we’re doing is hanging out with people all day and making them leave looking even better than when they first came in,” Mejia said. The Ritual doesn’t just cut hair, they also sell clothes that fall in line with the rustic and traditional style of the store. They sell brands like Suavecito, Pendleton and more. Brittany Jeanne opened The Ritual about five years ago. Jeanne also owns HepKat. HepKat is also a combination of a beauty parlor and clothing boutique. The stores are directly adjacent to each other and are fashioned like a seperate shop for boys and girls. Mike Cavana, a barber with The Ritual said, “My goal for anyone that sits in my chair is to feel and look way better than they did when they walk in.” A lot of their clientele is a mix of locals, students and alumni. “We’ve got a good mix of it all,” Mejia said. The Ritual also cuts women’s hair, if the hair is short enough.
The Ritual is located at 781 Higuera St and opens everyday at 10 a.m.
Best Dessert Batch
Hanna Crowley Between a dozen frozen yogurt shops and coffee houses, one downtown San Luis Obispo storefront stands out among the rest. Simple in idea but hearty in taste and character, Batch offers a unique grab-and-go treat to the people of San Luis Obispo. By winning this year’s Poly Picks for best dessert, Batch maintains its winning streak for the fourth year in a row. Since 2012, Batch has been creating made-to-order ice cream sandwiches from its location on Broad Street. Patrons can choose from various types of freshly made cookies and eight flavors of Doc Burnstein’s ice cream to make their perfect ice cream sandwich. “I like that the ice cream is local and that the flavors rotate,” communications studies senior Angela Solis said. “I can get something different every time I go because there are so many combination options.”
In addition to ice cream sandwiches, guests can also order a collection of other desserts. Popular options consist of pints of ice cream, cookies by the dozen, root beer floats and cookies with milk. Batch was started in 2012 by two sisters, Tami Becker and Wendle Schoniger who have always loved to bake and share their baked goods with the San Luis Obispo community so they can share a piece of the Batch family. To date, Batch’s cookies are made with family recipes. Despite a recent remodel that kept their San Luis Obispo location closed for several months, Batch continues to be a Cal Poly student favorite. They have been a well-loved staple of San Luis Obispo for six years and it doesn’t look that will change any time soon. Batch is located at 1108 Broad St.

Best Acai
Seeds
Katie Hardisty Quality of ingredients is what makes Seeds the go-to place for acai bowls. Seeds sprouted in 2016 and has grown to become a San Luis Obispo favorite for acai lovers, especially Cal Poly students. These Instagram-worthy bowls not only look delicious, but also contain the best ingredients. Co-owner Rammy Aburashed said Seeds uses fine ingredients in everything they create and have fresh ingredients delivered on a daily basis. “We use expensive ingredients, like almond and soy milk versus apple and orange juice,” Aburashed said. “We do not use any fillers, such as ice, in our acai bowls.” Seeds’ quality also stands out because most of their ingredients are sourced from local vendors. Part of their mission is making healthy items that taste, feel, and look great. “Eating healthy is really important to me,” mechanical engineering sophomore Jake Walejko said. “I go to
Seeds because their acai bowls are fresh and they use healthy ingredients.” Seeds has eight mouth-watering bowls to choose from. In addition, guests may also completely customize their bowl. Start by picking a base from favorites like acai, blueberry, strawberry or pineapple. Then add fruits including blackberry, mango and kiwi. Finish your bowl with seeds on top. There are also quite a few additives to choose from if your bowl isn’t customized enough for you. Some of these options include kale, pea protein, avocado and almond butter. If acai bowls aren’t for you, Seeds also offers signature smoothies and specialty toast. To crush your craving, stop by 1133 Garden St. in San Luis Obispo to get an acai bowl. Best Fries Firestone Grill Jacqueline Starnes San Luis Obispo’s Firestone Grill has been known among Cal Poly students for its flavorful barbecue, low prices, and vibrant environment since its establishment in 1995. Firestone Grill is a sports-themed restaurant that is full of excitement. It contains a bar, indoor and outdoor seating and an open kitchen that allows customers to watch their food being cooked. The walls are decorated with jerseys from professional athletes, as well as televisions screens that consistently air ESPN or other sports channels. Owner of Firestone Grill, Kyle Billingsley, said the culture of Firestone Grill is fast-paced and the liveliness of the restaurant attracts customers. What makes Firestone Grill’s French fries different than other restaurants’ fries is the special seasoning that is sprinkled on top. “My friends and I love to go to Firestone. We always order a big basket of fries to share with the table,” liberal studies junior Anna Lorentzen said. “They are everyone’s favorite and are the first thing to be demolished! I am not surprised they won.” This is not the first time that Firestone Grill has won a Poly Picks award. In past years Cal Poly students have voted Firestone Grill for Best Barbecue, Best Fries and Best Salad. Firestone Grill Grill is located at 1001 Higuera St.
While students aren’t studying, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Events puts on several events during the quarter. The most prominent one is the Spring Stampede. Over the school year, ASI events has hosted concerts, open mics and shows, all leading up to its prime event of the year -- the Spring Stampede. “All my friends are going to see it,” Connor Petterson, a history junior said. “We’ve been looking forward to it all quarter.” Spring Stampede is ASI Events’ largest concert, which will be held at Cal Poly’s Sports Complex. ASI Events is planning to hold this popular event for the fourth year in a row this June. Spring Stampede is the most popular event Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Events puts on. Missi Allison-Bullock, the ASI Programs coordinator, said more than 4,000 students attended the event in the past. “Music is the collaborator,” Allison-Bullock said. “It brings people together, the thing that people find common interest in.” According to Allison-Bullock, Cal Poly students find common interests in hip-hop and electronic dance music, so these two genres will be represented the most in the artists they select for the upcoming fourth annual Spring Stampede. Cal Poly has welcomed artists T-Pain, Jai Wolf, Sage the Gemini, Hoodie Allen and Flosstradamus to past Spring Stampedes. As to who will perform next, Allison-Bullock can’t say, but news about the lineup is coming. The next Spring Stampede takes place June 2 and is exclusive to Cal Poly students. Tickets are $10 and students must present their polycards upon entry. Students can purchase a ticket through the Cal Poly Ticket Office or at the door. Poly Picks 2018 23

Libertine Brewing Co. Morgan Wehsener This year’s Best Brewery saw some tough competition, but Libertine Brewing Co. takes the win. The environment, variety and vibe make Libertine a must-see destination for students, locals, and tourists. Libertine Brewing Co. has had a brewery in Morro Bay since 2012, and three years ago opened a tasting room on Broad Street in 2015. Best Burger
Sylvester’s Burgers Blake Woodworth
Since its founding in 1988, Sylvester’s Burgers has provided a friendly and conversational atmosphere for locals and travelers alike to enjoy world-class American food and notoriously delectable milkshakes. Employees at Sylvester’s pride themselves on combining a delicious meal with engaging customer service. This combination makes it no surprise that Cal Poly students have voted Sylvester’s as having the best burgers in San Luis Obispo County. Sylvester’s understands Cal Poly students’ appeal to the burger joint and how to ensure its continuity.
“
Zoe Adams, a manager at Sylvester’s original location in Los Osos, describes the restaurant as a “nice place to hang out” where “everyone has a good time.”
We like to please our customers and always have our doors open for everybody,” Adams said. In comparison to other burger-serving food establishments in the area, you’ll find more students dining in at Sylvester’s, taking in the “homier” environment and spending time with friends and family. The restaurant is well known for its humorously titled “Heart Attack Burger,” which is famous for its plethora of ingredients including: a fried egg, bacon, avocado, cheddar cheese and Sylvester’s signature sauce. While this enormous burger attracts a lot of attention, it is only one of a variety of choices offered at the location. Adams believes having “so many options” is part of what attracts young customers such as Cal Poly students. Sylvester’s has three locations in San Luis Obispo County: 1099 Santa Ynez Ave in Los Osos, 6455 El Camino Real in Atascadero and 1875 Front Street in Oceano.
Best Cal Poly Recreation Class
Cal Poly Yoga Maddie McPhail
Currently the largest university recreation facility on the West Coast, it is no surprise that students turn to the beautifully renovated Cal Poly Recreation Center for various fitness classes. This year, Cal Poly students chose yoga as the best fitness class offered at the Cal Poly Recreation Center, standing apart from the many others such as HIIT, Spin and Barre. Why yoga over other classes? Students randomly asked this question at the recreation center claimed te variety is what makes the yoga series stand apart from the others. The recreation center offers six yoga classes, ranging from advanced power yoga to restorative beginners’ classes. Students enjoy a wide range of benefits, such as increased flexibility, strength and relaxation, depending on which class they choose to take. “Our most popular yoga classes are the power yoga, restorative yoga and vinyasa yoga, but all are very well-attended. A lot of students use yoga as a method of stress relief,” a representative from the Cal Poly Recreation Center Pro-Shop said. The stress of Cal Poly’s academic rigor can have taxing effects on students, and it has become increasingly popular for students to take fitness classes specifically geared toward relaxation to maintain mental health. Each yoga class offered at the recreation center is classified under the “Mind and Body” section of Cal Poly’s group fitness classes, which address students’ mental health in addition to physical fitness needs. For example, the main objective of Cal Poly’s restorative yoga class is to relieve students’ stress levels and increase meditation abilities. Cal Poly looks forward to acting as a convenient place where students can take a break from academics and other stress-inducing activities and focus on mental and physical health. Poly Picks 2018 25

Best Coffee Shop Scout Coffee Co. Natalie LaFollette Growing up in the Midwest, Scout Coffee Co. owner, Sara Peterson, remembers taking long road trips with her parents and three brothers. As they drove between national parks and museums, her father would tell everyone to drink it in. This simple reminder to enjoy the moment is now the ubiquitous mantra forever associated with the charming San Luis Obispo coffee shops. Sara and her husband Jon opened Scout in early 2014 and ever since it has been a favorite gathering place for students and locals alike. Two years later, they opened a second location on Foothill Boulevard close to the Cal Poly campus. Peterson personally designed the interiors of both locations. The result is open, airy spaces filled with distinctive pieces including: recycled chairs, exposed ductwork, reclaimed wood bar tops and goldenrod floral wallpaper. Each item was purposefully selected to create a space that invites people to linger and enjoy. Before or after coffee, visitors can shop for a card or tiny knick-knack from the shop’s well curated gift section. Complementing the welcoming space is the customer service philosophy embraced by employees. Garden St. manager Sydra Gianassi explains, “Make their day – that’s our motto! We want to give the customer positivity with our coffee.” In every way Scout Coffee Co. embodies its drink it in mantra. Inspiring spaces, friendly staff and exceptional coffee make it a pleasure to step away from day to day life and enjoy the moment. Peterson recalls bringing her father to the Foothill location for the first time. She pointed out the boldly lettered phrase in black and gold prominently painted on the wall. Her father smiled and said, “Drink it in, I was just saying that to your mom on the way here.” Scout Coffee’s two locations can be found at 880 Foothill Blvd and 1130 Garden Street.

Dairy Creek SLO Josh Ortlip
The Dairy Creek Golf is a hot spot for golf in the SLO County area. Located on the El Chorro regional Park Land, Dairy Creek can be found among the central coast hills between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Guests can play year around thanks to the climate and maintenance of the course. In addition to a fantastic facility, Dairy Creek is perched among the rolling hills of San Luis Obispo, offering fantastic central coast weather to its members and players. Dairy Creek is owned by San Luis Obispo County Parks, which offers the community a means to enjoy the parks, trails and golf course on a year around basis. This particular golf course is one of three courses operating in San Luis Obispo County Parks and is the most recent to open.
“I think one of the reasons Dairy Creek is so successful is because of its proximity,” Clay said. “It’s the closest golf course to a wide variety of locations in San Luis Obispo County. Just the scenery and the fact that there are no houses in such a beautiful area gives the course a great appeal”, Clay said. The course spans 6,558 yards and rises and falls with the ever changing elevation of the terrain. Dairy Creek is also the home to many tournaments played throughout the year, which can be found on Dairy Creek’s golf club website. Information on these events and the upcoming tournament schedule can be found on their website. The club is located at 2990 Dairy Creek Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 Reservations for Dairy Creek Golf Course are accepted one week in advance by calling 805-782-8060 or 30 days in advance by making an online reservation.

What’s in a name? (more than you think)
This is called a glottal stop. It indicates an abrupt halt like when you say "uh-oh".
yak ityutyu means “our community” in the Northern Chumash language.
the “ty” sounds like the t+y when you say “nice to mee t you.”
