Aisuru offers special deals each week day including discounts on their ninja and spicy tuna rolls and tuna poke bowl. The famous “2 dollar Tuesdays” bring boat loads of students into Aisuru on a weekly basis. On a typical Tuesday, the entire restaurant is packed full of Cal Poly students and San Luis Obispo residents devouring california rolls and drinking sake bombs.

The Hite Special features a large sake and large beer for only $10. Communication studies freshman Kate Fitzgerald described the atmosphere of Aisuru as “good vibes and good sushi.”

For the college students on a budget, Aisuru is the perfect sushi spot for great food at an affordable price. The restaurant, located on Monterey Street, features a unique menu with a mix of Japanese and Korean food to reflect the heritage of its owners.

best ice cream

doc burnstein's ice cream lab

By Mary Fitzgerald Since 2013, Doc Burnstein’s has been serving up homemade ice cream to the residents of San Luis Obispo in a whimsical store located at 860 Higuera St. The ice cream is created locally in Grover Beach and known to be a family favorite.

Kahlua and fudge. Other ice cream flavors Doc Burnstein’s offers include Caramel X-plosion, Orcutt Crunch and Merlot Raspberry Truffle. Doc Burnstein’s ice cream can now be delivered to your doorstep through their website.

“Doc Burnstein’s has delicious ice cream I have been enjoying for years,” business administration junior Meghan Butler said. “It is a family-friendly space for all the ice cream lovers in the community. Now that I go to Cal Poly, whenever my family visits we make sure to grab some Doc’s at least once.”

Doc Burnstein’s is a local favorite not only because of their delicious ice cream but also because of their effort to give back to the community. Every year Doc Burnstein’s partners with the Make-AWish foundation to allow a local child to create their own ice cream flavor. The creation is sold all summer, and the proceeds from the sales go toward future wishes. Check out Doc Burnstein’s website for more information on collaborations with the community.

best bargain meal

costco

By Mackenzie Fell If you are looking for a delicious meal around five dollars, Costco is the place to go. Costco is a members-only warehouse that sells a wide variety of items, including but not limited to bulk groceries, clothing, electronics and outdoor activity equipment. You do not have to be a member to eat at the food court, however. Costco’s food court offers drinks, hotdogs, largely sliced pizza, hot sandwiches and frozen desserts at low prices. San Luis Obispo resident and Cuesta College student Connor Whitehead said he works while in school and supports himself financially. He said

he is a fan of Costco’s bargain meals because they fit his budget. “The food court at Costco has always been a bargain meal for me, even as a kid,” Whitehead said. “Whether it be their unbeatable prices, great tasting food or blink-of-an-eye fast lines, they never fail to satisfy me.” Costco is located at 1540 Froom Ranch Way and is open Monday–Friday from 10 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

best acai

the neighborhood By Kiley Gray The Neighborhood was founded by Cal Poly graduates Chris Herrera and Doug Wells, who wanted to stay involved in the San Luis Obispo community. They took a trip to San Diego and learned about the acai bowl and decided to bring their love for acai and superfoods back to their college town. At The Neighborhood you can find a variety of juices sourced locally and made in-house, in addition to their acai bowls. One of their most popular acai bowls is the SLO bowl, which is made of bananas, blueberries, granola, honey, strawberries and apple juice. The High Street bowl is another local favorite, consisting of peanut butter, bananas, almond milk, granola, almonds, strawberries and honey.

Located close to Cal Poly on Foothill Boulevard, The Neighborhood is in a convenient spot for students to get their acai fix. “It is easily the best acai and juice bar in [San Luis Obispo] with all of the different options,” biological sciences sophomore Brooke Waller said. The Neighborhood prides itself in using locally sourced goods and getting ingredients from Cal Poly whenever they can. They aim to produce high quality food and support local businesses. The Neighborhood currently has two locations, San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles, and plans to continue expanding in the future. The San Luis Obispo location is open every day from 8a.m.–6p.m.

best sandwich

high street deli

By Sally Huang Once again, High Street Deli has been selected as Cal Poly students’ favorite sandwich restaurant. Competitors cannot beat the deli’s price, taste or atmosphere. Owner and Cal Poly alumnus Randy “Doobie” Coates purchased the business in 2000 when he was attending Cal Poly as an agricultural business major. Despite Coates’ background, he said he has always been interested in the food industry. “Good food has shaped who I am,” Coates said on the High Street Deli website. The deli was recently chosen as the “Best Sandwich of SLO County” by New Times. The Tribune previously called High Street Deli “the best thing between sliced bread.”

08

Mustang Media Group

High Street Deli offers a variety of promotions and menu options. They consistently serve a daily special “sando” to keep their menu fresh. Any day of the week, customers can purchase a tee and get a discounted sandwich for only $6.99. The Dutch Punch has become a fan favorite in recent years, with dutch crunch bread often selling out before the business day is over. “The Dutch Punch is so good, but they never have the bread after 2-3 p.m.,” landscape architecture junior Kaila Sison said. Sison added that she loves going to High Street Deli for its great food and branding. High Street Deli is located at 350 High St.

best bbq and fries

firestone grill

By Lauryn Luescher Firestone Grill is known for its mouthwatering barbeque, upbeat atmosphere and mountains of fries. After being voted for best fries, best barbeque and even best salads in past years it is no surprise that Cal Poly voted Firestone Grill as best barbeque and fries another year in a row.

“We try to make the food the same as we did yesterday and the same as we made it 25 years ago,” Billingsley said. “It all comes down to consistency. People like to know what they are going to get.”

In the heart of downtown, the sports-themed restaurant and bar has been serving the Central Coast since 1995. With both indoor and outdoor seating, Firestone Grill caters to crowds on a daily basis.

Along with the famous barbeque, Firestone Grill has a community aspect because of the Billingsley family’s long history in San Luis Obispo. With the walls covered with a collection of community and sports memorabilia, the friendly smile behind the counter and Billingsley family members behind the grill, Firestone Grill has become a staple of this community.

Owner Hal Billingsley said the large crowds, TVs and ability for customers to see the employees cook all “That’s what is cool about being at Firestone,” add to the energy and fast-paced atmosphere of the Billingsley said. “I went to Cal Poly almost 20 years restaurant. best restaurant out of your budget/best italian

giuseppe's cucina rustica

By Lauren Walike Giuseppe’s Cucina Rustica has all your Italian fixes, from an array of pasta dishes for dinner to a refreshing scoop of gelato for dessert. The restaurant, located on Monterey Street, is built on the DiFronzo family philosophy that whatever is growing nearby is what goes on the table. They have their own farm that produces the heirloom varietal vegetables and fruits, according to their website. Manager and son of the owner Giuseppe DiFronzo Jr. said it is satisfying to have people come in and enjoy themselves at the restaurant. “We love it when people have a good time, eat well, drink well and enjoy themselves,” DiFronzo said. Although Giuseppe’s was voted “best restaurant out of your budget,” it might not be as out of your budget as you would think. During happy hour, Giuseppe’s offers items from five to $15, and you can get any pizza for $11. DiFronzo said while it is difficult to choose, one of his favorite dishes is Orecchiette e Braciole, which is a classic Pugliese dish made with braised pork ragu on top of ear-shaped noodles and braised flank steak stuffed with garlic and herbs. Giuseppe’s is currently offering their seasonal Zucchini Blossoms, which are stuffed with mozzarella and lightly fried. This dinner special is a must-try for newcomers and regulars, according to DiFronzo. “We love having guests here, and we love making people laugh,” DiFronzo said.

best hangover food

louisa’s place

By Kiley Gray Louisa’s Place has been serving up delicious food to cure hangovers in downtown San Luis Obispo since 1958. Family run and owned, Louisa’s Place is one of the few old-fashioned diners still serving all-American food in San Luis Obispo. Popular breakfast meals include a bacon and guacamole omelette or chicken fried steak and eggs. On Wednesdays, Louisa’s offers two for one huevos rancheros. They are starting to provide more and more gluten-free and vegan options to accommodate as many customers as they can.

Louisa’s takes pride in providing a lot of food for your money. The bustling, friendly atmosphere and big portions make it the perfect breakfast spot for families and students alike. Manager Kay said Louisa’s Place is appreciative of the San Luis Obispo community for being loyal to their restaurant. Next time you are in need of a healing breakfast meal, head over to Louisa’s Place, open from 6 a.m.–3 p.m. everyday. Photo by Connor Frost

“Louisa’s Place is one of my favorite breakfast places to go to on the weekend in San Luis because of the awesome pancakes and bacon” business administration junior Fabian Araujo said.

best cafe

blackhorse

By Katie Kelley This year students voted BlackHorse Espresso and Bakery as the best cafe in San Luis Obispo, where coffee and community collide. Their combination of freshly baked goods and premium-quality coffee brings students together in a comfortable atmosphere. There are four BlackHorse locations throughout San Luis Obispo, on Higuera Street, Broad Street, Foothill Boulevard and Los Osos Valley Road. “I think we have the right kind of vibe here and great music to just drink coffee” manager Kenzie Ritzman said. BlackHorse sources their premium coffee from Spearhead, a local Paso Robles coffee-roasting company, along with other non-coffee options such as tea, freezes and hot chocolate. Nothing

goes better with coffee than a warm, freshly baked pastry made specially by their in-house pastry chef, Matthew Mimmack. Among their most popular pastries are their muffins — specifically their delectable pumpkin chocolate-chip muffins. BlackHorse Cafe is the place to be for Cal Poly and Cuesta students during prep week and finals week. The Foothill location is expanding their hours to be open from 5:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. rather than 5:00 a.m.–5 p.m., giving students an extra five hours to continue their studying. With their expansive food menu and patio seating, Blackhorse Cafe is the perfect spot for a long day of studying. Anyone is welcome to text Latte to 77453 for BlackHorse promotions and deals on coffee, according to Ritzman.

Late nights are inevitable for most Cal Poly students. With midterms to study for, SloDoCo on Foothill is the perfect place to gather with friends and pull an all-nighter. Offering more than 100 donut options at a reasonable price, SloDoCo is the best place to get your donut fix while preparing for your next exam. “We have a lot of ample space,” business manager Heather Hackleman said. “Products are relatively cheap. We are open 24 hours a day and it is a safe space for students to work.” SloDoCo offers vegan and gluten-free options to cater to everyone’s donut needs, as well as monthly specials that are carefully curated each month. May’s special was Star Wars Bars for May 4, alluding to the famous saying “May the fourth be with you.” If the monthly special has not convinced you to head over to SloDoCo, maybe their most popular donuts, pillows, will sway you. Pillows are large donuts stuffed with a variety of delicious fillings that include peanut butter, Nutella and Chai cream cheese, among others. Customers can create their own donut concoction by ordering custom donuts as well. Customizing not only includes creating your own text and choosing your own colors but also adding any other details you wish your donut creation to have. These donuts make for the perfect gift for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries and club meetings. While SloDoCo is known to be exclusive to San Luis Obispo, they are expanding north to Atascadero. Waves of students flock to Starbucks on a daily basis to get the jolt of energy they need to push through rigorous coursework. Located in the University Union (UU) and in Campus Market, Starbucks allows customers to customize their drinks and offers everything from coffee to treats that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. She said her go-to drink is a Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher or a cup of black coffee.

“The line is worth the wait as long as you have time,” McRoskey said. Starbucks is busy throughout the day, but they see the most customers in the morning. Between classes or study sessions, students will stop by Starbucks for a drink or a bite to eat. In addition to their extensive drink menu, Starbucks offers a variety of snacks, sandwiches and pastries. The UU Starbucks is open from 6:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday. When founder James Whitaker moved to Berlin in 2006, he fell in love with the cafe culture and knew he had to bring it back to San Luis Obispo. Named after an artsy and edgy Berlin neighborhood, Kreuzberg opened its doors to the San Luis Obispo community in 2010.

The large circular island bar in the center of the cafe serves as the focal point for Kreuzberg. The space functions as a coffee bar, art gallery and even a used bookstore.

Whitaker made sure the same edgy charm was brought to his Kreuzberg with the help of upside-down thrift store lamps hanging from the ceiling, funky art on the walls and old paintings hanging in vintage frames. “I love studying at Kreuzberg,” agricultural business junior Avery Jones said. “There is always Photo by Kendra Oliver

On top of that, Trader Joe’s has its own food that you cannot find anywhere else, from their famous cookie butter to their seasonal items like summery mint watermelon-flavored black tea. Alongside the food there are plenty of smiling faces in trademark Hawaiian shirts waiting to help you check out and pack up your grocery bags. Liberal studies freshman Daphne Hummell has worked at Trader Joe’s for eight months and said she loves the community there.

“I love that it’s a wholesome place, and it’s very customer service oriented,” she said. “It’s a great place to work. I love it so much.” Another great aspect of Trader Joe’s is that if you are ever on the fence about trying something new, they have free samples so you can make sure you like it before you buy it. Hummell said one of her favorite Trader Joe’s items is the spicy lentil wrap, just one of the many ready-to-eat meals Trader Joe’s offers. Trader Joe’s is located at 3977 Higuera St. and open everyday from 8 a.m.–9 p.m.

best brewery

central coast brewing

By Grace Nielsen With a 4.5-star Yelp rating and many loyal customers, Central Coast Brewing has maintained its reputation as an authentic, local brewery since 1988. Central Coast Brewing prides itself on being an inclusive and friendly environment for beer geeks and college students alike. “With the beer scene, we’ve had a 21-year head start,” Central Coast Brewery owner and Cal Poly alumnus George Peterson said. “We’ve been able to read trends, grow sustainably over the years and find how to provide the best beer we can.” Central Coast Brewing has two locations — the original location on Monterey Street in downtown San Luis Obispo and a second location just outside downtown on Higuera Street that opened in 2018. The Monterey location is open until 9 p.m. everyday and hosts a “pub grub” food truck, What the Truck, Wednesday through Sunday. The truck features award-winning tacos and delicious bites that pair perfectly with brew. The Higuera location is larger with a full kitchen and more extensive drink menu. It is open until 9 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday and until 10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. Happy Hour is from 3 p.m.–6 p.m. Monday through Friday and features cheap appetizers such as tots and crispy brussels sprouts. Central Coast Brewery also holds events at the Higuera location throughout the year, such as their Sunday Concert Series. Must-tries at Central Coast Brewing include their award-winning Pale Ale and Black Lager, perfect-for-summer Golden Glow Lager and recently popular Terrifico, a Mexican lager with lime and sea salt. If you do not know anything about beer, do not sweat it. “It’s not a college bar or older people’s bar — it has a certain dynamic,” Peterson said. “You will feel welcomed no matter what age or beer knowledge you have.”

slo brew By By Grace Nielsen The fantastic drink selection, trendy entertainment scene and welcoming environment have led SLO Brew to withstand the test of time through multiple generations of college students. After a brand makeover in 2010 by the current owner and a move to Higuera Street in 2016, SLO Brew has successfully re-established itself in the community. SLO Brew is open until 2 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and until 6 p.m. on Sunday. SLO Brew offers brunch, lunch, dinner and Happy Hour. Popular Happy Hour specials include five-dollar Cali Squeeze and five-dollar Soft Rocks, also known as delicious, soft pretzel bites with cheese sauce.

Wells compared SLO Brew to “Cheers” because of the pride they take in their commitment to genuine hospitality and sense of community. “Cal Poly students are a part of our family too, and we want to provide a safe and fun environment for them…we hope to continue to be those friendly faces,” Wells said.

SLO Brew expanded in 2017 with the opening of SLO Brew Rock, a unique venue with a taproom, restaurant and extensive outdoor space located on Aerovista Lane. “The Rock” is also home to SLO Brew’s 30-barrel brewhouse, complete with guided tours. “We want to continue to grow in the community that’s driven by local businesses,” general manager Sarah Wells said. “With our new spot, new location of SLO Brew Rock, canning beers again … we are revitalizing the culture that made us successful in the first place.” Cal Poly students are attracted to the fun atmosphere SLO Brew provides. By day you can find business meetings, casual lunch dates and light food and drinks. By night you will find music blasting and a line out the door. “I love the food and the art,” liberal studies senior Jasmyn Harlan said. “Also, the concerts are so bomb. I’ve been to a couple this year and they always deliver.”

best slo hidden gem

the secret garden organic herb shop By Lauryn Luescher Cal Poly students have chosen The Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop as the best hidden gem in San Luis Obispo for its calming atmosphere and unique tea blends. The Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop opened downtown in 2004 as a small brick-and-mortar specialty bulk tea, herb and spice store. They primarily work with botanicals for natural self-healing and culinary pleasure, and everything is ordered and sustainability packaged on demand. Owner and founder of The Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop Kirstin Sherritt said she brought this shop to San Luis Obispo because she wanted to share her love for herbalism and self-care with the community. “My inspiration was definitely my love and passion for herbal medicine, natural healing and self

care,” Sherritt said. “I saw that there wasn’t much of a resource out there so I wanted to bring that resource to the community.” One of the most unique aspects of The Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop is that they have their own unique blends created by Sherritt and her staff. They can also make herbal blends to customize to the needs of the customer. Through her business Sherritt wants to promote a tea culture around San Luis Obispo and show people that using tea, herbs and spices can improve daily life. The Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop comes out with new formulas seasonally, so head into 740 Higuera St. to experience the top hidden gem of San Luis Obispo and try out their summer blends.

best yoga studio

cal poly recreation center

By Chelsea Stewart Voted the best yoga studio in San Luis Obispo for two years in a row, the Cal Poly Recreation Center offers multiple yoga classes and levels for all students. Yoga classes are taught by 18 yoga instructors and include form restorative, Vinyasa power and Hatha yoga. Vinyasa yoga involves matching breath to movement, so the moves and the workouts are very fluid. Hatha yoga is more static and involves holding positions for a certain amount of time. Liberal studies senior Maddy McManigal is a power vinyasa yoga instructor who teaches Friday classes. Her classes incorporate core workouts and push ups and are recommended for athletes. “Lots of people who come in, especially athletes, may think that doing yoga means that you need to be flexible, when really it’s not,” McManigal said. “Yoga is a great workout that can help assist with your flexibility.” McManigal said the Cal Poly Recreation Center is the perfect place to start getting into yoga because there are beginners in every class. “One of my favorite parts of yoga is the community, and San Luis Obispo offers an amazing community,” McManigal said. “I have met people through the Rec Center and local studios who have all been really supportive and really friendly.” She encourages newcomers and students who are looking to improve their mental and physical wellbeing to try out a class. All of the yoga classes offered at the Recreation Center are free for students. To reserve a spot for one of these classes, visit asi.calpoly.edu/recreation_center. Photos by Diego Rivera

pashion footwear

By Caitlin Royston For Cal Poly alumni, founder and CEO of Pashion Footwear Haley Pavone, it all started with the common sacrifice women make when choosing their shoes for a formal event: looks versus comfort. While Pavone was at her sorority formal her sophomore year at Cal Poly, she took off her heels to go dance, because “dancing in six-inch heels doesn’t really work, you can’t totally break it down,” Pavone said. As she was dancing she was impaled in the foot by another woman’s heel, and while she was sitting there in pain, the idea for Pashion Footwear was born. “The only real solutions are to go barefoot and bring an extra pair of shoes or just not wear them and feel a little bit out of place,” Pavone said. “It struck me as odd that it is the 21st century and this is the best that we have done in women’s footwear. I just felt very inspired to see if I could come up with a better solution myself.”

best rec center class

From there on, the rest of Pavone’s college career was spent getting her business off the ground. She described the major lifestyle change that came about from adding a start up company on top of the schedule she already had as a student. “All of a sudden instead of going out to parties on a Friday night I was staying up in my apartment studying shoe geometry,” Pavone said. Since graduating in 2018 Pavone has grown the company significantly. Pashion Footwear has brought their total fundraising to $1.7 million and is patent pending in 30 countries. They produced the first 300 shoes, and after getting customer feedback they scored a 5.6 out of 6 on the basis of comfort, ease of use, stability and fit. Currently they are working to launch their full website for direct consumer sales starting in late June. body pump

By Lauryn Luescher With a beautiful 165,000-square-foot recreation facility on campus, it is no surprise that when students need to take a break and let off some steam many of them turn to BodyPump, one of the many group fitness classes offered at the recreation center. BodyPump is a class offered as part of the recreation center’s strength and tone series and is specially developed to isolate and strengthen different muscle groups. Class members use barbells and do a combination of squats, curls, presses and lifts to challenge their bodies.

“It’s intense if you aren’t used to weight training, but it’s fun and upbeat and the instructors are really lively,” graphic communication junior Creekstar Allan said. Reservations for group fitness classes are available to book online up to 24 hours in advance. Descriptions of each class can be found on the recreation center website. Current class series include strength and tone, mind body, cardio focus and cross training. Students interested in BodyPump should arrive wearing close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.
