Best Indian Jewel of India
For freshmen at Cal Poly, the food at Vista Grande and 1901 Marketplace can quickly become repetitive, leaving many to seek out something different – often turning to the food trucks around campus for variety.
Among the most beloved of these is Jewel of India, a family-owned restaurant that brings the vibrant flavors of Indian cuisine to students through its food truck and storefront at 2115 Broad St.
“Particularly in freshman year it was a source of diversity in terms of food offered on campus, and it was honestly quite the reprieve at times,” Emily Goetz, Cal Poly junior said.

The original Giueseppe’s started as a senior project in Pismo Beach and has since expanded into a beloved second location in San Luis Obispo. This family-owned favorite remains a popular spot for gatherings and celebrations, carrying on the same spirit it was founded with.

Best Vegetarian Ziggys
Eating out can be extremely hard for people on plant-based diets, and very few restaurants are solely plantbased. This is how Ziggy’s, a 100% plant-based restaurant located less than a mile from Cal Poly’s campus, came to be.
The co-owners, Brian Englund and Matthew Martinez noticed a lack of plant-based food in the area and created Ziggy’s. The takeout restaurant features burgers, tacos, fries and shakes. They offer the Impossible Patty and a homemade Ziggy patty, which is popular among their customers. It’s made with black and pinto beans, carrots, corn, bell peppers and a variety of spices.

The closure of Kennedy Library significantly impacted student life at Cal Poly. Whether you prefer studying in bed or are a dedicated library nook enthusiast, the loss of this five-story book haven has felt like a major blow. Best WOWie Activity Bishop Peak
A stunning volcanic plug nestled within oak woodland, sage scrub and chaparral, lies Bishop Peak – an iconic landmark of San Luis Obispo. Named after its homage, “Obispo,” the Spanish word for Bishop, is known for hiking, bouldering and breathtaking views of San Luis Obispo County.
Rising 1,559 feet above the sea, Bishop Peak offers a 360-degree view of SLO. For hikers, several trailheads lead to the top, depending on your preferred intensity of the hike. The Patricia Drive
route offers a seasonal cattle pond, a shaded forest and an open chaparral on the south side, while the Highland Drive trailhead offers a more technical route, involving more steep and rocky challenges.
Along with diverse hiking trails, the peak also offers multiple areas for bouldering or rock climbing. With its uniform characteristics, there’s opportunity for various climbing styles such as bouldering, sport, trad and mixed.

Whether you are hiking, biking or climbing to the top, the views from the peak are breathtaking – featuring sights from as far as Pismo Beach to Morro Bay.
For plant enthusiasts, this is a perfect hike to look at some coast live oaks, and bay trees, as well as sagebrush, coyote bush and monkeyflower. Birdwatching is another common activity that takes place on the rock, so keep an eye out for jays, and passerine birds, as well as golden eagles, bald eagles, owls and vultures.

Beach Bonfire
SLO and the central coast are widely recognized for their beautiful outdoors, especially the beaches. Many people have been to the beach, but having a bonfire alongside the ocean – now that's a completely different ball game. Being such a unique and exciting endeavor, these beach bonfires are one of the most popular outings that the freshman engage in during their Week of Welcome.
These bonfires, which are quite literally providing light and warmth, are the perfect way to share stories and foster
stronger connections between the freshmen. The purpose of WOW week is to allow the freshmen some time to meet some familiar faces and make the transition to college a little smoother before starting classes. These bonfires can play a vital role in lots of their firstweek experiences at Cal Poly because of the shared experience it creates between the group.
Not only do these bonfires create a comforting environment, but they also usually have something sweet in store for the freshmen, including s’mores.

Authentically SLO Guayaki Yerba Mate
Mustangs can’t get enough of Guayaki Yerba Mate. What started as a senior project at Cal Poly has now turned into a yellow canned phenomenon that has changed the face of caffeinated drinks.
Traditionally, yerba mate is a South American drink made from the dried leaves of the yerba mate plant. The loose leaves are steeped in hot water and put in a gourd circle for friends and family to share. The indigenous people of these areas managed and consumed yerba mate for its sacred and energizing properties, but it wasn’t until the 17th century that yerba mate became more popular, and it has been growing ever since.
Co-founder Alex Pryor introduced yerba mate to co-founder David Karr while they were studying food sciences at Cal Poly in 1996. Extending their ideas to three more of their friends, the five of them began their yerba mate journey and are referred to as the “Semillas,” or the “seeds” of the company.
Guayaki started with the traditional loose leaf tea. Between the years 2000-2004, the Semillas caravanned across the Country to introduce people to the drink. In 2005, Guayaki took inspiration from the national drink of Paraguay called “tereré,” which is an iced yerba mate drink with blended herbs and juices, and started producing their popular ready-to-drink yerba mate.
