It was 6:30 in morning. I still remember that fateful day that would change my life forever. I was checking my email and someone had emailed me out of the blue. He told me he knew I was looking for a great income stream online and that I should consider providing leads for him. The only reason I paid any attention was I was working a day job for a company in that same industry and knew how much money was being thrown at leads. So I took what I knew about SEO (search engine optimization...getting high rankings in Google), which I could teach you in 10 minutes, and built a website to try to get leads for this guy. One of the main principles I knew about SEO is that adding good content to a website helps it rise up in the search engines. Since I love to write I knew I could do that. And away I went. There are 4 key principles that I stuck to when doing SEO: 1. I created a content strategy that I implemented consistently and regularly. 2. I made sure the content was search engine friendly. 3. And I made sure there was a lot of it for the search engines to consume.
One other SEO principle I understood was the importance of getting links pointing to my website. So I found a few good places to get links and added that into the mix. 4. Get relevant links to your site By following these 4 pillars for SEO success I was able to shoot up the rankings on Google. Before I knew it I was ranking for keyphrases that were driving a lot of traffic to my website everyday. And when these visitors came to my website, I convinced them to fill out a form requesting more information from the company I had partnered with. All they had to do was enter their name, email and phone number and I would get anywhere from $20 to $40. But here is the best part: Once the website was up and running, all I personally was doing was adding content to the site and a few links here and there. That’s it. And it took hardly any time. Adding 2 articles of 1000 words a week is all I needed to keep growing in the search engines and driving more and more traffic to the website. I was literally working 12 hours a week on this website and the money came in.
Before I knew it I was making $3000 per month on this site. I stopped writing the articles myself and just hired a freelance writer to do the work for me. This freed up even more time to write movies (my true passion). It got to the point that all I was ever doing for this website was adding the content the freelance writer had written and adding a few links here and there and then checking to see how much money I had made that day. Talk about liberation. But I wasn’t satisfied with just $3000 per month. I knew that if I had done it once I could do it again. So I started another website. This time in a different industry and went back to the 3 pillars of SEO content. 1. Content strategy consistently implemented 2. SEO friendly articles 3. The more content the better 4. Get relevant links Only this time I did something different. I didn’t start a new website from scratch, I decided to buy an existing website from someone else to help skip the ramp up time. I got an amazing deal on this site that was primed for awesomeness. (I’ll tell you more about that process on a later day) As I implemented the 4 pillars the website jumped in the search rankings. And this website was EVEN better than the first. Within 2 months of owning it the thing was making me almost $4000 per month.
So between the 2 websites I was making about $7000 per month and only spending 24 hours a week working on them. Like I said life changing. Well if my story ended there that would be amazing but it actually got WAY better. I kept repeating the process because these websites took almost no time to run. I got to the point where I was making over $20,000 per month. (Now you know why freelance writers are in such high demand) Now I know you are probably saying to yourself, “I don’t know SEO so this won’t work for me.” What you need to know I can teach you how to do in 20 minutes. But here is why SEO is so important.
If you have a website that can be automated, in other words it can make you money without you having to be directly involved in the process, then all you need to do is get the search engines to send you free traffic to the site and you are totally free. This is what I had done with these websites. But wait, it get’s better.
One thing I found out along the way is that investors love these types of websites. I literally had people calling me begging me to sell them one website after another. When the offers got into the 6 figures I did what any reasonable person would do, I started selling. All told I have sold 14 different websites for over 1.2 million dollars. Yes I said million. Insane right? This allowed me to not only pursue filmmaking full time, but I was also able to take it to the next level and pay for my own feature film. See I didn’t just want to write, I wanted to be a filmmaker. And now I could fulfill this lifelong dream and call all of the shots. I wrote it, I directed it and I produced it. In 2014 I released “ Inspired Guns ” in theaters. Then later that year on DVD . In fact just a few weeks ago my wife and I went to the Filmed In Utah Awards show where my movie won BEST FEATURE FILM! Here’s a pic from the event:
All because I had these awesome automated websites. So let’s talk about the 3 pillars of SEO content in a little more detail. Pillar 1: Good Content Strategy Consistently Implemented I know, I know it’s a mouthful. Basically what it means is with any website you start you need to know exactly what the purpose of the content you are writing is. For me on the first website, it was to get Google traffic that would drive more leads.
The second part of this pillar is that you need to be consistent with the content. As a general rule you should be adding at least 5001000 words of content to a website at a minimum of once per week but 23 times is much better. This is how you will separate yourself from the websites you compete against. Pillar 2: Search Engine Friendly Content Anytime you add content to a website you need to have a purpose. In other words, you need to be targeting certain key phrases that you want to rank for on Google. So let’s say I was writing content for a real estate website in Arizona. I would add content one day that targeted the phrase “homes for sale in Phoenix” and maybe another day target “house values in Arizona”. You can target more that one key phrase when you write an article but you should focus on one. There is no use adding amazing content if you aren’t going to get traffic from it. Pillar 3: Add Lots Of Content You have to remember that one of the main ways that Google looks at a web page and decides what that page is about is from looking at that content of that page. The more content you have on the page the more you can convince Google to rank you higher. Again, this will help differentiate you from the other websites trying to rank for the same key phrases. When I am adding content to a website now I
usually will only do a minimum of 1000 words but sometimes will go past 2000. I know it takes longer to write but the time is an investment. Write a 2000 word article now and watch as it drives traffic that makes you money 24 hours a day 7 days a week. So that is how I did it. I figured out how to automate these websites and drive traffic by adding awesome content. The only special skill requires was the ability to add content, and if you’re reading this I’m pretty sure you have that. Even if you don’t want to write yourself, you can find good freelance writers that will work for really cheap. At some point you will probably start hiring other writers. Let them make you rich while you pay them $10$25 per article.
