Senior Citizen Fee Reduction

Senior citizens, 60 and over, eligible for a tuition/fee discount, may register, on a space-available basis, within seven days prior to the start of a noncredit course. The fee for that course will be reduced by 50%. Online courses and textbook cost are not eligible for a fee reduction.

Developing Unique Website Ideas A website name that stands out from the crowd is one of the strongest ways to begin developing a successful site. In many cases, the more offthe-beaten-track, the better—even if only to draw curious first-time viewers. On the net, the creativity of content is literally boundless—hindered only by our own imaginations. ServSafe ServSafe is nationally recognized for food safety and sanitation and is required for all Mass. restaurants. Some concepts include: sanitation, dangers of food borne illness, keys to food safety; how to prevent cross-contamination; flow of food through the operation; using time and temperature controls; safe receiving, food storage, preparation and serving; safe cooling and reheating; pest management and prevention. The one hour exam is administered at the end of class. Upon passing, participants receive ServSafe certification valid for 5 years. Instructor: Dan Zunitch. ServSafe Recertification Review and Exam Review key components of the ServSafe materials, followed by the certification exam. Students should study course material on their own. This course is for experienced food service professionals who have previously passed the ServSafe exam and whose certification has expired or is about to expire. Personal Interest Firearms Safety Basic Pistol Course With "Live Fire"

Complete this course to receive a Massachusetts State Police Basic Firearms Safety Certificate, required for application submission to local firearms licensing authorities in Massachusetts (specifically for License to Carry A, B or Firearms Identification Cards). Learn how to identify the principle parts of a handgun, and types of actions; the rules for safe handling of handguns and ammunition; the basic responsibilities of safe handgun ownership and use; basic firearms laws related to handgun ownership, carrying and use; how to safely store handguns and ammunition; methods of childproofing and securing handguns; and how to safely load, unload and fire a semi-automatic handgun and revolver, as well as basic cleaning and basic marksmanship. Personal Protection in the Home "Live Fire"

This is an advanced class and students should possess a License to Carry (LTC A, B) as well as knowledge of safe operation of a handgun. This class covers important fundamentals of home protection including: Mass. Laws, making you and your home safer, awareness levels, responding to a possible break-in, avoiding a confrontation, confronting an attacker, if you shoot and the aftermath of a defensive shooting. Students should have their own handgun, holster and 50 rounds of ammunition, and eyes and ears protection (will be provided at an additional cost, if you don't own them, and if you provide a valid LTC A, B). Music & Dance Ukulele for the Nearly Musical

Simpler to learn than many other string instruments, but bursting with quality music and fun - it's the ukulele. The uke was huge in the 1920s, “a force” in the 1960s, and in the last few years has again become the instrument of choice for great-sounding, transportable music. This class is for anyone who would like to learn the basics quickly and start playing songs. Simple chords and a focus on interesting strumming techniques mean you will sound great after just one class, and you will soon have a song-list ranging from modern pop to Tin Pan Alley. Intro to Songwriting

For anyone who wants to write or perform their own songs, or just wants to know more about the process. Topics will cover: how do I start?; are you stuck in a loop; writing with no instrument; free at last; making a demo; co-writing; don’t lose that lyric; ideas to break writer’s block; performance tips and more. There will be a guest speaker each week. Instructor: Mark Fisher. Mark has released five CDs of his songs and won two Worcester Music Awards in 2008. Learn How to Take Photographs That Will Impress Everyone

Getting your photograph to look the way you envisioned is more than keeping the subject in focus and the right exposure. It’s also about putting all the elements in the photograph in the right place, taking advantage of the best light for your subject; and using patterns, lines, shapes, and texture, among other things to interest the viewer. After reviewing photography basics and all the bells and whistles on your camera, you’ll learn ways to improve your compositions and how light affects your photographs. This camp is offered on NEW the afternoons of the half day camps. They will eat lunch from 12-1 PM then have camp from 1-3 PM. It will be a fun filled afternoon of a variety of activities with our staff to surely tire them out. Optional Extended Care for the Summer Programs Children can be dropped off at the Fitness & Wellness Center between 8 AM – 8:50 AM and picked up between 3 PM – 5 PM for a cost of $25 per week per child. Children will be picked up at 8:50 AM by a program assistant and walked directly to the main building. The assistant will walk participants back to the fitness center at 3 PM. There is no extended care for half day programs that end before 3 PM.

Academic Adventures Electronic Lab (ages 7 – 12)

(Lunch program available for additional purchase) Thirty different projects and experiments are built in this hands-on workshop with an electronic kit participants get to keep. Kids’ minds will be stimulated through easy-to-understand experiments, helping to increase their knowledge of electronics. Science project ideas will come alive as they build the projects while working with electronic circuits. The kit is reusable. They will have fun designing their own projects once they’ve built all 30. Kids can proceed at their own pace. Each will keep an 80 page manual, two solder-less circuit boards, 12 resisters, two capacitors, two light-emitting diodes, two transistors, one battery snap, one diode, one speaker, one timer, one photocell, one rectifier, one potentiometer and one switch. Medieval Castle (ages 6-11)

Pre-teens and Teens

The middle ages were a time of knighthood, castles with moats, and wide-open country-side. Archeologists are still unearthing buried treasures. Kids will dig the ruins of a medieval castle and uncover replicas of four ancient treasures. They will find an armorial seal, coin, heraldic pendant, and an arrowhead. It’s fun and easy to chip away at the mystery matrix clay and to excavate, study, and display findings. Participants might even wear them as jewelry. With the castle dig molding tray and the sand they dig away at, they can create a castle tower and a gargoyle. Kids will become archeologists with fun activities in this exciting field of science. Harry Potter - Join Our Magical Mystery Tour (Ages 6 – 11)

All aboard for lots of hands-on fun! Join in the escapades of Harry and his friends; play quidditch; write with invisible ink; make an edible wand; and brew some fantastic potions to drink. They will create and watch some fantastic chemical reactions. They will watch a mirage appear. Kids won't believe it! They can wonder where the sorting hat will place them. Make cool crystals. Chemical Magic—Magical MicroscopesRocks and Minerals (ages 6-11)

Through hands-on activities, kids delve into the world of science and fun. They will: learn to make batteries from fruits and potatoes; make a fantastic crystal tree; work with invisible ink; see the happy and sad balls; work with powerful magnets; look at prepared slides using microscopes; learn about different types of rocks and minerals. Participants will become chemical detectives: making glob from glue; using paper chromatography to separate colors; and making dirty pennies turn clean and clean pennies turn green. Everything will be explained to you so you can go home having learned some interesting science. Hands-on science is the best way to learn. Materials included. Paranormal Investigations Camp (Ages 12-14 years)

Would you like a deeper insight into the world of paranormal investigation? If so, Paranormal Camp is for you. Even if you’re a skeptic, this course will provide you information on the possibilities of haunting and also using scientific methodology to debunk things. We will study the different types of paranormal activities, and use the essential investigating equipment, the investigating process and how to deal with the aftermath of an investigation. The program will culminate with your paranormal investigation team conducting an actual investigation and a video report of your findings. Instructor: Melissa Croteau. Video game making is no longer just for computer programmers. Kids are learning to use fun and easy software to build their own games. CSI (ages 8-12)

Students become super science sleuths. Have fun learning about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as they perform as many as 15 different experiments to see just how those tricky cases are solved. Kids will search for the evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery. They will: dust for fingerprints, analyze handwriting, test for blood type using simulated blood, examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances and much more. Can You Dig It? Fossil Hunt - Do You Dig Dinosaurs? (ages 7-12)

Archaeology and paleontology seem like big words to kids. Each child will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering the different bones of dinosaurs and then assembling the bones to form a completed three dimensional dinosaur to be taken home. Students will identify and make plaster replicas of an ammonite, Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth or choose from other molds. Learn to identify rocks and mineral; and grow beautiful crystals to take home. GED Testing Registration Registration must be done in person. The full test fee of $65 must be paid at the time of registration. Cash, check, money order, or vouchers may be used for payment. Testing fees are nonrefundable.* *Students who fail to show up for their scheduled exam will be charged $25 for each test they miss.

Age Requirements Students must be at least sixteen years of age to register. Students under age eighteen must provide a letter from the last school they attended. They must also have a parent or guardian sign a verification of eligibility form.

Other Requirements Proper ID is required: either a current driver’s license or government photo ID. All registrations for re-test must also be in person. The fee for re-tests is $15 each; this fee is also non-refundable. The test is available in English and Spanish on a limited basis. A large print version is also available in English. Students must request the large print version in advance. Limited copies are available. Persons with a

disability who may require accommodations to participate in a fair testing session should contact the GED chief examiner at 978-630-9173 to determine eligibility. Requests should be made prior to registering for any test session.

Adult Basic Education & GED Preparation The Regional Adult Education Center at MWCC offers Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED preparation, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Classes are free of charge through funding from the Massachusetts Department of Education, Employment Links, and the Robinson Broadhurst Foundation.
