Conversation With Diamond Soror Ruth Thomas Soror Angie: “Good evening Soror Ruth I pray that all is well and thank you for talking with me this evening. To start can you share with us when you first became interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated?” Soror Ruth: “I was initiated in the Spring of 1942 in to Gamma Beta Chapter Omaha, NE. When I was in college there was no talk of Sororities on my campus. One day a lady knocked on my door and ask if I was interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha and I said yes.” Soror Angie: “Soror Ruth can you tell us of one of your most memorable moments in Alpha Kappa Alpha?” Soror Ruth: “Without a doubt my most memorable moments were pinning my daughter in 1979 she was initiated into Epsilon Nu Omega Denver, CO and then in 2005 seeing my granddaughter initiated into Delta Epsilon Omega Omaha, NE.” Soror Angie: What have you enjoyed most about Alpha Kappa Alpha?” Soror Ruth: I really enjoy the programming. My career was in social work so I was really impressed with the Mississippi Project. There was a Soror in Cleveland, Ohio who helped a lot of women during the Vocational Project as well that was very impressive.” Soror Angie: “Soror Ruth what has been your secret to lifelong membership in this illustrious sorority?” Soror Ruth: “Well you have to live a long time. I am very health conscious. I read a lot about good eating and try to take care of myself. At this Regional Conference, I was crowned as a Diamond Soror my daughter could arrange a lunch between myself and Soror Mary Greenwood who is also a Diamond Soror this year. We had a marvelous visit she is a remarkable woman. So, I would say the key live long, take care of yourself and stay engaged.” Soror Angie: What words of advice would you give to new Sorors in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated?” Soror Ruth: “I would tell everyone to hang in there. There is so much to do in Alpha Kappa Alpha now, more programs, more committees there is something for everyone. There is a lot of work to be done just hang I there.” Soror Angie: “Well again I thank you Soror Ruth it has been on honor and privilege speaking with you this evening and meeting you at Regional Conference.” 9

Representing the Alpha Kappa Alpha Brand By the International Communications Committee

A brand is a concept, an ideal that people hold in their minds and in their hearts when they think about a product, individual or organization. For Alpha Kappa Alpha, at its core, a brand is a promise of what the organization represents and what it means to those who engage it. Over time, the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand elements became visual reminders of what our brand means to our members and those we serve. Consistent use of our key messages, logos and other brand elements build awareness and recognition of the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand. Here are a few branding tips for sorors and chapters: 

Usage of the coat of arms is encouraged. Chapter and region websites, flyers, banners, posters or other publications should bear the official Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority coat of arms or the full name of the sorority. All chapters received a CD with the official coat of arms and the Launching New Dimensions of Service logos. Chapters should never download a copy of the coat of arms from popular search engines on the internet as they are incorrect replicas0. ®



When using Alpha Kappa Alpha coat of arms with the administration logo, always place the coat of arms to the left and the administration logo to the right. Never use more than two Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority logos on websites, flyers, banners, posters or other publications.



Chapters must request usage of the sorority coat of arms for published or printed materials including but not limited to candy bars, umbrellas, tents, banners, posters, campus plots, community memorials, clothing, etc. when not being furnished by an authorized AKA vendor. Please submit a sample rendering of the item (s) to be produced to exec@aka1908.com to request usage permission and a high-resolution copy of the logo to provide to the manufacturer.



The Launching New Dimensions of Service logo (s) should be used on all program-related webpages, flyers, banners, posters or other publications. For example, if a chapter is hosting a local ASCEND ®

program, it is recommended that the banner bear the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority coat of arms and the Launching New Dimensions of Service logo or the ASCEND logo. ®



Each chapter is a representation of the sorority. When writing the name of your chapter on a flyer, banner or other publication, remember AKA always comes first. Example: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Alpha Alpha Alpha Chapter. ®



Photos and videos should depict Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s service mission and sisterhood. Photographs should depict undergraduate and graduate sorors engaged in community service or in sisterly relations activities. Photographs should be action-oriented, focusing on the specific tasks sorors are performing. Avoid posed or staged group photographs, when possible.



A Boilerplate message should be used at the bottom of all media releases. Chapters and regions may add a brief addition to the boilerplate pertaining to regional or local leadership and community presence in the city/region. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s official boilerplate message is as followed:

Back to Basics: A Formula for Successful Chapter Operations and Evaluations International Standards Committee Your International Standards Committee remains committed to assisting chapters with “Exceeding Expectations of Excellence” in their chapter operations and with their evaluations. Consequently, our 2017 regional conference and Leadership Seminar workshop will focus on “Back to Basics: A Formula for Successful Chapter Operations and Evaluations.” Chapter Basilei and Standards Committee Chairmen are encouraged to attend. The following are a few “Back to Basics” reminders for successful operations. Chapters are strongly encouraged to read and follow “Financial Fundamentals Guide to Chapter Financial Procedures.” • Bonding: “Alpha Kappa Alpha Bylaws, Article VII, Section 7, require each chapter to bond its Tamiouchos and Pecunious Grammateus. It is recommended that any other soror handling funds (i.e., check signer, fund collectors, etc.) also be bonded. For undergraduate chapters, the Graduate Advisor(s) must be bonded and sign the chapter checks in addition to the two undergraduate chapter officers (Note: Bonding companies generally do not insure any persons who are under 21 years of age. In such cases, the Graduate Advisor is the bonded position). Bonds should cover positions and not individuals, i.e. blanket bond. Chapters should review their bonding coverage annually when the bond is renewed to ensure the chapter coverage is adequate. Surety bonds may be secured through insurance brokers and should be kept in the chapter files.” (page 15) Note: The Graduate Advisor position is listed on the undergraduate chapter bond. • Financial Officers Certification: Chapters should ensure that the Basileus, Graduate Advisors, financial officers and those seeking these positions attend the Financial Officer Certification in order to ensure that chapter procedures are in accordance with Sorority financial requirements. • Internal Audits: Financial records of the Pecunious Grammateus and Tamiouchos, and accounts of expenditures of officers are examined annually by an internal audit committee appointed by the Basileus and a written report is provided to the chapter. Copies of the internal audit reports should remain in the chapter files and be included in the chapter minutes. • Chapter Financial Procedures: Chapters should have detailed financial procedures for handling chapter finances in accordance with the chapter bylaws and Alpha Kappa Alpha financial guidelines. Copies of chapter bylaws and/or chapter operating procedures should include an explanation for handling chapter finances and remain in the chapter’s files. Additional items needed to help ensure successful chapter operations: • Minutes: Chapter minutes should be hard-back bound, signed and dated by officers and include monthly reports presented at the meetings. • Sponsoring Graduate Chapters: Graduate and undergraduate meeting agendas and minutes should reflect that the joint meetings took place. Mentoring programs need to be developed and documented. Graduate Advisors’ reports, newsletters, chapter minutes should reflect that all undergraduate chapter records, property, checkbooks, etc., are kept by the Graduate Advisor during vacation months. • Chapters with Foundations: Such chapters should have copies of “the annual chapter reporting forms to be filed with Corporate Office and the Regional Director.” (Financial Fundamentals Guide to Chapter Financial procedures, page 20). Leadership Development: The New Focus Alpha Kappa Alpha has changed the face of leadership development. Your voice was heard and your vote counted at the 67th Boule in Atlanta. Overwhelmingly, you approved the Amendment to our Constitution and Bylaws to designate the International Leadership Development Committee as a Standing Committee. Under the direction of Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, we unveiled “Launching New Dimensions of Leadership –The 4D Approach” at the 2015 Leadership Seminar in Chicago. We focused on empowering sorors through the dimensions of sorority, professional, community/civic and personal. “The 4D Approach” was met with such a commendatory response that we offered the first-ever Leadership and Development Day at the 67th Boule in Atlanta. As we prepare to close out this administration, members of the International Leadership Development Committee will now “forge a way” to refine our beloved Sorority’s training institute to prepare our leaders to meet our training and development needs as 21 century community servants. st

Designing and Implementing New Training and Developmental Resources The International Leadership Development Committee is charged with designing and implementing exciting and relevant content. Our goal is geared to improve our overall effectiveness in the second century of Alpha Kappa Alpha. At the 2017 Leadership Seminar in Las Vegas, the International Leadership Development Committee will unveil “Launching New Dimensions of Leadership – Refining The 4D Approach.” The 2017 Leadership Seminar will include exhilarating forums and over 70 enhanced workshops, many of which have been refined to further enable sorors to develop in the areas of our 4 Dimension leadership training program: sorority, professional, community/civic, and personal. Our leadership development program is inspiring new dimensions to support our members as they endeavor to make a continued impact in the communities we serve worldwide. Sorors, clutch your pearls! An array of Certifications will continue to be offered: Basilei, Financial Officers, Graduate Advisors, and Standards. We have also fulfilled “greater tasks” and are offering a tool for sorors to leverage with their employers to request employee-sponsored professional development credit and/or tuition reimbursement. Expect the unveiling of a Chapter Resource Guide, specifically designed to support sorors interested in leading at the chapter level. Campaigning Now! Greetings, Sorors! I am excited and delighted to greet you on behalf of the International Nominating Committee! As we prepare for what promises to be an unprecedented campaign season in 2018, the INC is already hard at work ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the certification process. With this as our main objective, we are committed to Informing, Nurturing, and Cultivating the Leaders of AKA. By now, chapters should have received the newly revised edition of “So You Want to Run for Office.” We hope that you are as excited as we are that all active sorors will now have the opportunity to view the promotional documents for all candidates in the Members Only section of www.aka1908.com. We want to provide sorors with as much information as possible about those vying to lead AKA into the future. We hope that these changes will improve the process and serve as the launch pad for even more upgrades to come. “Mid-Western Region Goes Global at the 87th Regional Conference” On March 29-April 2, 2017, nearly 600 sorors from across the Magnificent Mid-Western Region convened in the City of Denver Colorado for the 87 th Mid-Western Regional Conference. Sorors boarded many modes of transportation and navigated their way to the Mile High City. Upon arrival to the Grand Hyatt Denver Hotel, sorors began to embark upon a tour across the globe guided by the Cluster A Host Chapters in the capable hands of Sorors Kathy Redwine-Nesbitt, Chairman and Danielle Summerville, Co-Chairman. As Denver is the highest point above sea level and the headquarters of the Global Positioning System better known as “GPS”, the theme for the conference was dubbed as “Launching New Dimensions of GPS: Global Positioning of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service”. Joining the tour were our First Class Guests Supreme Basileus Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, First Supreme Anti-Basileus Glenda Baskin Glover, Second Supreme AntiBasileus Keniece Gray, Supreme Grammateus Charletta Wilson Jacks, Supreme Tamiouchos Danette Anthony Reed, Supreme Parliamentarian Martha Perine Beard, Undergraduate at Large Victoria Simpson, 28th Supreme Basileus Carolyn House Stewart, South Atlantic Regional Director Sharon Brown Harriott, South Eastern Regional Director Mary Conner, Central Regional Director Kathy Walker Steele and MidAtlantic Regional Director Joyce Henderson. Other special guests from outside the region were Executive Director Cynthia Howell, Linda Groomes Walton, International Leadership Training Chairman, Vanessa Rogers Long, International Membership Chairman and Deidra Y.A. Edwards, International Honorary Members and Awards Chairman. Included in the tour were our Magnificent Former Regional Directors; 19th Delorise A. Gines, 21st Margie Barre, 24th Alberta G. Jones, 25th Brenda A. Lewis who also serves as the International Rituals Chairman, 26th Betty Davis Gause, and 27th Maggie W. Green. Sorors Gayle Miles Scott, International Finical Officer Certification Training Chairman, Linda Brooks Gaines, Graduate Advisors Certification Training Committee Member, Joyce Walker, Building and Properties Committee Member, Tonette Echols, International Financial Officer Certification Training.

Committee Member and Gwendolyn Kimble, International Technology Committee Member rounded out the VSGs for the conference. Each tour stop brought its own unique flair representing some of the world’s most traveled city’s or country’s such as Paris, Iceland, Mexico, London and Ethiopia. The first stop began with Thursday Certification Workshops, Community Service Projects focusing on Seasonal Wraps, School Supplies and Back Pack Collections, 1908 Playground Acts of Green Revitalization of Historical Curtis Park of Five Points, preparing lunch and donating gifts cards for the families at Ronald McDonald House, a Welcome Reception in Mexico, EAF Bingo, Pamper Me Pink in Paris, Man Cave Social Lounge, and the Regional Director’s “Gallery of Pearls in Service” Dinner held at the Blair–Caldwell African American Library. A special wreath ceremony was held in th honor of our 13 Supreme Basileus Laura T. Lovelace born in Pueblo, Colorado. The conference was opened on Friday by Regional Director, Jan M. Carpenter-Baker, which included the Parade of Chapter Flags and a crowd pleasing welcome by the Navigation Tour Guides of Cluster A to the tune 24KT by Bruno Mars! The First Plenary Session included a video introduction of the Mid-Western Regional Director by International Regional Director Gizette Canegata Thomas. Rededication was conducted by the 28th Supreme Basileus Carolyn House Stewart. The Second Plenary Session included the State of the Sorority given by Supreme Basileus Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, International Committee reports and award presentations. We celebrated “The Glistening Pathways to our Sisterhood” 2017 Diamond, Golden and Silver Sorors and paid special tribute to our 2017 Diamond Soror, Ruth Thomas! Denver’s best community organizations received honors and awards at the region’s annual Public Meeting, “Global Positioning for Service” featuring The Vanguard Awards honoring The Historic Eight African American Members of the Colorado Legislature including Sorors Rhonda Fields and Janet Buckner. The “GPS” tour later took us to experience a great step show presented by the region’s undergraduate chapters and featuring The Golden Steppers all over the age of 55 who lead the way!

On Saturday, sorors rose early to arrive in London to recognize our region’s leadership at the Leadership Breakfast “Giving Passionately in Service”. Chapter Officers and attendees received a passionate charge by First Supreme Anti-Basileus Glenda Baskin Glover! Sorors left this destination to attend and participate in the various workshop opportunities to boost their educational

knowledge of Alpha Kappa Alpha processes. The “Glamorous Professional Sisterhood” Undergraduate Awards located in Rome, was an excellent tour stop which included a prominent message, delivered by our Second Supreme Anti-Basileus Soror Keniece Gray. The captivating Legacy and Memorial Legacy Parade began the final plenary session. We were excited to hear the news of the pinkie gesture receiving a trademark and history being made in our Region with the recognition of our own Regional Communications Officer, Soror Rhonda Harris, serving as the illustrative artist for the trademark. The last tour of the evening took us to Iceland for the “Glamorous Green Pearls Soiree” where graduate sorors and their guests danced to the tunes of Charlie Redd and the Full Flava Kings. The undergraduates had a great time in participating in an undergraduate gathering to chat, stroll and enjoy refreshments. Sunday, we were guided to an amazing view of the Denver Mountains from the top floor of the Grand Hyatt for the Ecumenical Service ‘Greater Possibilities in the Spirit”, destination Ethiopia with the message delivered by Rev. Aleze Fulbright. A Gospel Brunch followed where sorors and guests enjoyed the tunes of Gospel Jazz artist Ron McMillian. With all “GPS” turned on for home, the 87th Mid-Western Regional Conference Global Positioning came to a wonderful end!

Highlights of the 2017 Leadership Seminar “Refining The 4D Approach”

The Mighty and Magnificent Mid-Western Region was well represented at the 2017 Leadership Seminar held in Las Vegas, July 13-16th. A great number of our members bared the hot climate and took advantage of all the Leadership Seminar had to offer in the way of leadership, professional, community, personal development and continuous learning through “Refining The 4D Approach”. The Leadership Seminar brought the first Risk Management Summit which delivered crucial information designed to protect the perpetuity of our illustrious sorority. Sorors were able to enhance their knowledge of Alpha Kappa Alpha procedures, programs, and personal enrichment and gain certifications through various workshops presented by the International Leadership Training Committee. Congratulations to those Sorors who received the Second National Certification for Chapter Basileus which was presented by the International Chapter Basileus Certification Committee and University of Nevada Las Vegas. In addition our Sorors took part in the community service projects that benefitted the communities of Las Vegas, including Toiletry Collection, Seasonal Wraps, Virtual Grocery Store, One Million Backpacks collection and Assembly, Childhood Hunger project where they prepared packaged meals. Bringing AKA to the West was 8th Supreme Basileus Ida Louise Jackson. A permanent park bench was dedicated in her honor. Next, sorors participated in the unveiling of the 1908 Playground Project Park Bench in honor and dedication of our 26th Supreme Basileus Linda White. The first Las Vegas based Leadership Seminar was held in 2003 under her leadership. On Friday the EAF Foundation generated over $10,000 for scholarships during a bidding war auction for the opportunity to attend Dinner and a Broadway Play with Madam Supreme, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. Our Platinum Chapters, Alpha Zeta, Beta Omega, Beta Sigma Omega, and Xi Tau Omega were recognized for their donation to EAF, and were invited to participate in the Platinum Parade. The Women of Distinction Award was presented to 26 th Regional Director Soror Maggie Green for her yearly contributions of $500 and the Beta Kappa Omega and Iota Zeta Omega Chapters received the Green Diamond Award for their endowment of $20,000 each. After the luncheon we were entertained by the sounds of Roy Ayers.

On Saturday morning all chapters who had submitted their Strategic Plan received recognition with a certificate signed by the Supreme Basileus. Some of the special features of the weekend were the famous Las Vegas sign being lighted up in pink and green, the opening ceremony where the host hotel Bellagio for the first time turned their fountain lights on in our beautiful pink and green colors while the waters danced and swayed to piped in music playing along the boulevard, and the book unveilings “A Legacy Supreme II highlighting the Story of the 18th, 21st, 24th, 28th former Supreme Basileus, and Soror Buckhanan Wilson. During the evenings sorors were invited to the Regional Suite “Luck Like A Lady” where they enjoyed light snacks, socialized and played games. The closing gala “Livin La Vida Vega Gala” brought some of the best entertainment, which allowed the sorors to chose their preferred music taste between Cameo, Will Downing, Terisa Griffin, or DJ Vince Adams. We are grateful to our Magnificent Regional Director, Soror Jan M. Carpenter Baker who was extremely busy taking care of business and demonstrating her own leadership skills in every capacity as she represented our regions interest. Overall it was lauded as one of our best Leadership Seminars.

Overland Park, Kansas - On Saturday, June 3rd. the Upsilon Rho Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority celebrated 20 years of chartering with a weekend full of events. The celebration began with a chapter mixer that Friday night followed by a formal celebration that Saturday and concluding with a day party that Sunday. The Saturday celebration saw several members of the community join the members of Upsilon Rho Omega for delicious refreshments provided by Geaux Catering, celebratory cake from DeLite Pastries, and jazz entertainment courtesy of the Paseo Academy of Performing Arts jazz band. Sorors and guests had a wonderful time reflecting over the achievements of URO through the chapter displays and photograph slide show and we are looking forward to what is to come. The featured speaker for this event was Soror Sena Brewer, the first Basileus of Upsilon Rho Omega. Over 50 guests attended this historic event, including all three area basilei from our sister chapters, Beta Omega, Mu Omega, and Xi Tau Omega. On behalf of the committee, Soror Gayle Newsome chairman, and the chapter Basileus Soror Ashley Hall, we thank everyone for their support in our historic celebration!

Beta Omega Chapter host Kansas City Metro Founders’ Day Celebration

Kansas City, MO - On Saturday, February 25, 2017, Beta Omega chapter hosted the Greater Kansas City 2017 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Founders’ Day, celebrating 109 years of “Service to All Mankind” at the Sheraton Hotel Kansas City at Crown Center. The theme for the event was “Honoring Our Founders through Partnership and Service.” Sorors from MU Omega (Kansas City, KS), Xi Tau Omega (Grandview, MO), Upsilon Rho Omega (Overland Park, KS) and Delta (University of Kansas) chapters were in attendance. Also in attendance were sorors from Omega Nu Omega

Chapter of Springfield, MO, the newest Graduate chapter in the mid-western region and sorors from the St. Louis area of the central region. Regional Director, Jan M. Carpenter Baker and area chapter Basileus brought greetings. Soror Omega Tillman of Beta Omega sang a musical selection titled “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” Several Beta Omega sorors performed a historical skit entitled “Keepers of the Vision” written, produced and directed by our 19th Mid-Western Regional Director, Soror Delorise Gines. Seven community organizations Beta Omega have partnered with since 2014 focusing on the five target areas associated with the sorority’s 2014-2018 International Program Focus “Launching New Dimensions of Service” were recognized for their

tireless efforts and their programs that impact our community. The service project for the day was to provide “Blessing Bags” filled with toiletries for the Homeless. Over 200 “Blessing Bags” were donated to Hope Faith Ministries.. As a special way to help sorors get excited about the upcoming event, Soror Ramona Davis held a “Social Media Game” which consisted of clues. Sorors / guests had to identify the person in the clue. There were five clues with four winners (one Soror won twice). The winners were Sorors Gena Williams, Loren Foster, Teresa Johnson and Conoshia Hunt Odum. The winners received pink and green popcorn from Popcorn Heaven. 39

On Monday January 16, 2017 The Gamma Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated helped to sort shoes to send to Kids of the Caribbean. Sorors completed close to 35 bags of shoes and each bag held 25 pairs of shoes. Members of the Alpha Iota chapter also came to help and show support.

Iota Beta Omega Chapter conducted day of service at Care & Share Food Bank. 12 Sorors totaling 74hrs and 13 family members participants totaling 78hrs a combined 152hrs.

For the fourth year in a row members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Mu Omega chapter teamed up with exercise guru Lonnie Bush and the Lonnie Bush Fitness Center to celebrate “Pink Goes Red For a Day.” Fifteen women participated in an intense aerobics and weight session with Ms. Bush, a licensed personal trainer, before Mu Omega members presented a heart health awareness program. Mu Omega sponsored the program as part of the sorority’s partnership with the American Heart Association. In 2003, the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute took action against a disease that was claiming the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year – a disease that women weren’t paying attention to. A disease they truly believed, and many still believe to this day, affects more men than women. Stemming from that action, National Wear Red Day was born. It’s now termed “Go Red for Women” and is held on the first Friday in February every year to raise awareness about heart disease being the No. 1 killer of women.

Psi Chi Omega Chapter and Dr. Percell Psi Chi Omega Chapter hosted its first Pink Goes Red Dress Brunch high atop the 20 th floor of the US Bank building at the Nebraska Club in Lincoln, NE. Saturday, February 4, 2017, with seventy five people in attendance to honor Lincoln’s only African- American heart specialist, Dr. Robert Percell, MD. Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist of Bryan Medical Center. Dr Percell was recognized for his work in treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels as a specialist in treating heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation (A- fib). The Keynote Speaker for this event was Dr. Lucille Woodard, MD, Women’s Health Coordinator, and Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Dr. Woodward will deliver a message about the importance of women’s health and prevention and the necessity of sharing your family medical history throughout generations. Dr. M. Colleen Jones, educator, consultant, philanthropist, President of the Melvin W. Jones Foundation, and member of the host Chapter gave a moving presentation on her personal experiences of the unseen effects of diminished heart health with her family and friends, and the sudden loss of life and the lasting effect on love ones.

On Saturday February 18, 2017 the ladies of the Gamma Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated had its annual Pink Goes Red celebrations. Member of the sorority graduate, undergraduate, and inactive sorors alongside with several people of the Jefferson City community did an array of line dances and slides. Sorors and members were given brochures that educated and focused on Heart Disease control and preventions.

Mid-Western Region Day at the Capitol

Mid-Western Region, led by the Connection Committees, hosted AKA Advocacy Day at the Capitol in the States of Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Beginning February in Topeka, Kansas to April in Lincoln, Nebraska, all were attended by Regional Director Soror Jan Carpenter Baker and International Connection Representative, Soror Twyla Woods Buford, who provided the focus across the Region. Each Capitol visit included programs which called for Meet and Greets with the State Representatives who discussed current issues and pending bills; being introduced on the floor of the Senate and House of Representatives; presentation of proclamations by State Governor’s; an afternoon programs which focused on direct conversation about how to “Be The Voice” during local and state elections and the guidelines for members participation in demonstrations and protests. Highlights of the States all important advocacy days included sorors from Kansas attending a committee hearing dealing with voting rights where Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach gave testimony during the hearing, as well as members of the Kansas Black Legislative Caucus.

In Iowa sorors participated in a mock demonstration on how to engage their legislators on issues. The demonstration was followed by Q & A session and visits with their legislators to use the newly acquired advocacy skills. Missouri Mid-Western Region and Central Region joined together to spend the day learning about the Bills that were being introduced by minority legislators on Education Funding, Mental Health, Pay Day Loans and other Statewide issue. In Oklahoma “How to Lobby your Legislature” was presented by Senator Anastasia Pittman. Soror Cynthia Walker lead the group in a discussion of the alarming youth suicide rates in Oklahoma, and programs implemented in the community to address skills students need in the prevention stages. In Denver Colorado, during the luncheon, sorors heard from Representative Soror Janet Buckner, Representative Tony Exum, and Senator Rhonda Fields. They spoke on issues pertaining to health care and health related issues, immigration and education. This year the State of Colorado made history by electing for the first time eight (8) African American legislators, two of which are Alpha Kappa Alpha women. Finally the Nebraska chapters launched a letter writing campaign to increase Voting Rights to former felons. Successfully, LB 75 was passed April 24, 2017 to give immediate voting rights to former felons that successfully complete parole. Overall, sorors are pleased that their advocacy efforts are making

On April 23, 2017, 124 young women who attend the University of Missouri-Columbia joined the ranks of Alpha Kappa Alpha women across the globe. The Delta Tau Chapter and the Mid -Western Region is honored to embark upon this historical initiation, and the celebration of the legacy of our sisterhood. The New Member Luncheon was attended by over 400 guests. Honored guests at the luncheon were Delta Tau Charter members Soror Mable Jones Grimes and Soror Jaqueline Wright Coleman. The keynote speaker for the event was Delta Tauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very own Soror Jan M. CarpenterBaker, Mid-Western Regional Director. Soror Jan was initiated in Delta Tau on November 18, 1977, and is celebrating 40 years of membership. The Basileus of Delta Tau is Soror Kiera Everett who is originally from the state of Kansas and is majoring in Hospitality Management | Food & Beverage Emphasis. The supervising graduate chapter is Kappa Chi Omega, Soror Pamela Nunnelly, Basileus, Soror Botswana Blackburn, Graduate Advisor, and serving on the Graduate Advisor Committee is Soror Kathy Crews, Soror Antoinette Landor, Soror Avila Nilon, and Soror Katie Wine. Pi Xi Host Successful AKA Week at University of Central Missouri Warrensburg, Mo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Pi Xi chapter of the University of Central Missouri held a successful AKA Week. The week focused on three of the five targets which included Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Awareness, Fiscal Responsibility and AKAdemy Awards. On Thursday we went to the Veterans Care Center and had a fun time playing Bingo with the resident veterans. Each game paid $2 for the winners. On Friday we held our AKAdemy Awards at the Milestone Barn, where UCM students came in formal attire to receive a variety of campus award categories. Pi Xi received the Best Campus Sorority Award. Proceeds from the event were donated to the local domestic violence shelter. Ciyanna Hughes, serves as Basileus and Kelsei Bowie, Anti-Basileus.

Theta Upsilon Omega Chapter, Lawton, Oklahoma hosted its 2017 ASCEND Kick-Off on February 19, 2017 at Cameron University. The theme for the kick-off was STEM Day (science, technology, engineering and math). The guest speaker was Marcia Brown, Pre-Engineering Instructor from the Great Plains Technology Center, Lawton, Oklahoma. The ASCEND students participated in three (3) instant challenges which required them to work together as a team and share ideas to complete the projects. They also viewed two (2) STEM videos, both related to job opportunities and careers. The students evaluated the program and gave the instructor and activities high ratings which exceeded their expectations.

Sorors of Theta Upsilon Omega Chapter attended a presentation/interpretation of the first African American to be admitted to the University Of Oklahoma College Of Law. The life of Oklahoma civil rights trailblazer Soror Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher was portrayed at the 7th Annual Lawton Soulful Story on February 16, 2017 at Lawton City Hall. Soror Sipuel Fisher became the first African American to be admitted to the University Of Oklahoma College Of Law in 1949 after a three-year legal battle. She later taught at Langston University and was assistant vice president of academic affairs when she retired in 1987. Soror Sipuel Fisher was portrayed by Vanessa Adams Harris. Her presentation showcased the courage, strength and fortitude the Law school pioneer exemplified to attend University of Oklahoma School of Law.

Dr. Zelia Wiley wins 2017 MANRRS Legend Award for promoting diversity in agriculture Kansas State University â&#x20AC;&#x201C; We congratulate Dr. Zelia Wiley, interim associate provost for diversity, on receiving the 2017 Legend Award of Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences, or MANRRS. The national award recognizes those who have made strong contributions to MANRRS' mission of promoting the academic and professional advancement of minorities in agriculture-related fields.

"Dr. Wiley has devoted herself to agriculture and to making sure that minority students understand the opportunities available in the agricultural sphere," said Tiffany Carter, who nominated Wiley for the award. Carter, Kansas City, Missouri, is a doctoral student in agronomy and a member of the K-State MANRRS chapter, which Wiley founded and advises. "There is no limit to what Dr. Wiley is willing to do for her students, so I am very fortunate to have her in my corner," Carter said. "She truly is a legend in the field of agriculture and within the MANRRS organization."

Soror Young is the recipient of The Zonta International Women of Achievement Award. The award acknowledges the accomplishments of women from the Jefferson City area who are nominated by the community. These women met the criteria being noted from their exceptional achievements in their chosen professional field or as a volunteer working to improve the community.

She has received her Masters of Arts in Marketing and a sequential degree in Media Communication from Webster University. On December 30, 1968 a sweet little preemie baby girl was born to Patricia Townsend and Herbert Gray in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Soror Delaiña was a born fighter as she entered the world with a hole in her heart and at the tender age of three, survived open heart surgery which began a battle which made her a "True Survivor." She was affectionately and lovingly called “Laina”. Soror Delaiña attended Greeley Elementary, Carver Middle School (where she was a cheerleader) and graduated from Booker T. Washington as a proud Hornet in 1987. She attended Central State University in Wilberforce, OH and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration; and later earned a Masters of Business Administration in Accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University. It was during her matriculation at the University of Wilberforce that Soror Delaiña was also heavily involved in both ROTC and fell in love with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. She was initiated into the Beta Xi Chapter in 1990. Alpha Kappa Alpha was always near and dear to Soror Delaiña’s heart. Throughout her lifetime, she was able to become a Silver Star in 2015, served as Basileus Alpha Chi Omega

Chapter and recognized as the chapter’s 2017 “Soror of the year”. These are only a few of her many achievements and accolades in her service to her chapter and the sorority. Soror Delaiña accepted Christ at an early age where she became an active member of St. Luke Baptist Church. There she served on the Junior Usher Board, Choir, and Secretary of Sunday School. While living in Ohio for over 20 years, she was a member of Blessed Hope MBC. She was instrumental in establishing the Girl Scouts in East Cleveland, created annual events such as of the Mother-Daughter Sock Hop, Father-Daughter Banquet, summer camping trips, and college tours. It was no coincidence that the majority of the girls Soror Delaiña mentored all went off to college. In 2008, she returned to Oklahoma and in the true “Delaiña Spirit”, she instantly regained leadership roles in several community service organizations. She actively participated in PTSA at Booker T. Washington and was instrumental in developing new programs and college tours for the school’s organization Men of Power. It was during her undergraduate years that she met and married the love of her life, Jerome Holmes, III. To this 27-year union was born their daughter, Soror Sumayya and son Isaiah. Soror Delaiña became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on March 13, 2017. 91

Soror Wanda Joyce Jenkins, was born on June 20, 1946 in Kansas City, KS, and grew up in Leavenworth KS. She was the older of two children of the union of Rev. S. J. Holly, Sr. and Armeta Bagby Holly. Soror Wanda was a proud member of Beta Omega Chapter for twenty-eight years serving in numerous capacities during her active membership. A graduate of Leavenworth High School, Leavenworth, Kansas she received her B. S. degree in Social Work from the Kansas State College of Pittsburg, Kansas in 1969 and a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS in 1974. She was a licensed clinical social worker in the State of Missouri. Soror Wanda served as the Director of Concord Impact Center. She spent over 30 years in providing mental health services to those who could not speak for themselves. She spent 17½ years developing clinical case management programs for Swope Health Services, retiring in August 2008. Soror Wanda also served as a case manager and counselor for the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Missouri Association for Social Workers. During her career, she received the following awards: Missouri Social Worker of The Year;

Ark of Friends Community Mental Health Award, and Ark of Friends Professional of The Year Award. Soror Wanda has been a field instructor for the School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas and an adjunct instructor of social work at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and is the past President of the Board of Directors of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) 20112012. She was also a Life Membership of the NAACP, past president of the Northwest Missouri Women’s Missionary Society, and the past treasurer of the Community Housing Network (2009/2010). Soror Wanda believed that one of the most important events in her life was a trip with 101 Black Women from all around the country, who went on ten-day medical mission to Zambia, Africa under the direction of the Fifth Episcopal District of the Women’s Missionary Society. Soror Wanda became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on July 10, 2017. She was married to Melvin L. Jenkins, Sr. Esq., for 45 years and leaves loving memories to him and their four adult children, Dawn (Kelvin Wilkerson), Shelley, Melvin, Jr. (Jennifer), and Holly (Ryan Long); seven grandchildren, Kelley, Dyneisha, Taylor, Tyler, Melvin III, Morgan and Raelyn; one great grandchild, Kayvion; and brother, Rev. Simon J. Holly, Jr.(Marilyn). 92

Soror Frances Juanita Sudds Fox was born in Mansfield, Louisiana. She was the third of five children born to Jeffrey Sudds & Roberta Whitaker Sudds. As a child, she lived in a Christian community. She was blessed to have both parents highly devoted to God, family, church and the community. Soror Frances married, Dr. Arthur D. Fox. She was the proud parent of three adult children, and three grandchildren. Soror Frances was a charter member of the Mu Omega Omega Chapter of Aurora, Colorado and during her active years, she served in many capacities to assist in growing and strengthening the chapter. She was a Life member of the sorority. Her education includes the following; University of Colorado – Doctor of Education Degree in School Administration and Supervision; University of Denver – Secondary School Principal Endorsement; Colorado State Department – Type D Administrator Certificate ; Prairie View A&M College – Master of Arts Degree; Southern University –

Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education; Adams State College – Courses in Techniques/ Deal/with Racism, and Teaching and Thinking, Music/English Teacher – Rosenwell High School, Logansport, Louisiana, Theological Studies; Lliff School of Theology; United Theological Seminary; Consecrated Diaconal Minister 1995; Deacon in Full Connection 1998. Soror Francis S. Fox Continued promoting the financial support for our United Methodist Church related 11 Historically Black Colleges, Universities, Medical College, and the Black College Fund. After her retirement, she spent her days being a continuing presence in the church. She spent time teaching and working with her three grandchildren, teaching them to be more life Jesus, and to grow up to be all the God wants them to be. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. Soror Frances Juanita Fox became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on May 19, 2017, in Littleton, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include, 2 sons, Arthur D. Fox, Jr. of Littleton, Colorado and Gregory F. (Paula) Fox of Parker, Colorado; a sister, Earnestine Sudds of Shreveport, Louisiana; 2 grandchildren, Makayla R. Fox and Tyanna N. Fox both of Parker, Colorado; special grandson, Higden Donnell Armstrong; 2 uncles, Green Whitaker and Dave Whitaker both of Shreveport, LA; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

Alpha Epsilon Omega

Soror Avalon B. Reece was born October 10, 1927 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to the union of Thomas and Estella (Smith) Reece. Avalon was the youngest of nine children, all preceded her in death with the exception of Thelma Reece Parks of Oklahoma City, OK. Soror Avalon served by example in the various offices she held as a faithful member of Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter, Muskogee, Oklahoma. Her leadership extended from Alpha Kappa Alpha into the community in which she lived. Soror Avalon accepted Christ at a young age at the Rayfield Baptist Church. She graduated at the young age of 16 from Muskogee Manual Training High School in 1944, and from Langston University in 1948. She pursued and received a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Southern California to name a few colleges in which she attended. She later received an Honorary Doctorate from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma. Soror Avalon was a distinguished educator for 45 years who contributed outstanding service to students and adults of Muskogee

and the State of Oklahoma. She served the Muskogee Public School System in numerous capacities. She was well known for serving as the Manual Training High School Band teacher and director and recognized for many years as the first and only female band director of any race at the high school level in Oklahoma. Under her leadership the band was renown and many of her students went on to achieve high musical acclaim in Jazz, Pop, and Church music. Soror Avalon served as a Manual Training High School counselor from 1967-1970, and continued counseling at the Muskogee High School from 1970, until her retirement in 1993. Soror Avalon was a pioneer in the Civil rights Movement and defied racial barriers. She served in Public Service as a member of the Muskogee City Council. As such, she was the first Black Councilwoman in Oklahoma. In 1980, she was appointed by Governor George Nigh to a nineyear term with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. She served as Chairman of the Board and in December 1987, Regent Reece administered the oath of office to Hans Brisch, PhD, as Chancellor of the State's Public Higher Education System. 95

Soror Avalon B. Reece Continued She organized and inspired many youth and adult civic and recreational group exhibited by the establishment of a teacher education scholarship at Langston University awarded to aspiring professional educators in the State of Oklahoma. She received many local, state, and national honors, and was a member of numerous professional, civic, and community organizations. Soror Avalon was honored by taking pictures with Jimmy Carter and President George W. Bush. She opened doors of opportunity for all people. She was an encourager and often saw in people what they didn't see in themselves. Soror Avalon was a leader and a trailblazer who established a legacy for Muskogee Oklahoma. She was very well known across the state of Oklahoma and beyond. Her Alpha Kappa Alpha Legacy lives on through her daughter Soror Thelma ReeceParks.

CONNECTED

We all share a connection. We breathe the same air, feel the warmth of the sun; share life on the same planet. Our paths are connected in ways both seen and unseen. The food on our table may have come from the farm nearby, from across the country or from across the world. Similarly, new technology allows us to connect with loved ones or strangers faraway. As humans we also share in feelings of happiness and sadness, peace and frustration. We are one in God, connected in spirit. Knowing we are one, we demonstrate empathy towards others.
