Betty

Betty (noun) — Epitomizes a modern day queen, commonly associated with increased levels of self-worth (because she continues to create it). She has the power and agency to be irresistibly sexy and feminine minutes after effortlessly emasculating a mere dozen men with her intellect and ability to deliver. She is educated, deep, witty, simple and young-hearted. She is naturally beautiful, honest, brave, loyal and nurturing. She is the whole package; balanced, quirky, open-minded, complex and flawed. She can be raw with her words, and gentle with her touch. She is soulful, connected and driven. A modern day triple threat, go-getter. Introducing Betty, a new feminist lifestyle magazine for women. touch. She is soulful, connected and driven. A modern day triple threat, go-getter. Introducing Betty, a new feminist lifestyle magazine for women. Today, magazines like Cosmo, Self, and Glamour are a huge part of our culture. Walk into any convenience store and the first things you see are rows of women’s magazines, almost all featuring a young, thin, light skinned celebrity. We are bombarded with tips and tricks that promise to make the reader the perfect woman, but in the end often only leave her feeling worse about herself. Magazines promise that if you wear these clothes and act this way you will be infinitely more successful in life. If the pretty girl smiling in the picture can do it, surely you can too! I aim to pinpoint what is wrong with magazines today by creating my own digital publication. With my publication, named after the trailblazing feminist Betty Friedan, I hope to empower women and help them realize that we deserve more from our magazines. Sincerely,

I’m definitely most comfortable in a t-shirt and jeans. I really love this shirt because it’s a step up from a basic t-shirt, but I still feel like myself! — Eileen

Dresses are so effortless and easy, one piece is a whole outfit! I’m in a dress all summer long, and in the winter I pair it with tights. — Lindsay

I’m actually so comfortable when I’m really dressed up. Getting all fancy is so much fun! — Ellie

Charlotte Russe is my go-to for inexpensive dresses. I like to feel pretty, but I’m on a budget! — Erin

this stuff is

CRAZY !!

Pick the eyeliner that’s right for you! A felt tip eyeliner is your best bet when perfecting the wing. It creates a precise line without the messiness or skill needed for a liquid eyeliner. Be sure to buy black for the most dramatic effect!

Start with a clean, makeup-free eye and draw a line straight from the corner out almost to the end of your eyebrow.

Draw a third line from the inner corner of your eye accross your lid to the second line.

Next, draw a line from the edge of your pupil connected to the first line.

Fill in the shape you have created.

Add some liner to the bottom, swipe on some mascara, and you’re done! Go break some hearts.

A few inexpensive extras can make your life so much easier when dying your hair. Tap an item to buy

Short hair

Dying the bottom layer of your bangs for a flash of color by your face.

Shoulder length hair

Adding a bright color streak one one side.

Long hair

Dipping the ends of you hair in dye for cool contrasting tips.

If you have fair skin... Go for bright cherry red Vibrant blue-based cherry reds contrast with pink undertones in fair skin to make lips pop. They also happen to make teeth look whiter. It’s a dramatic shade, so keep the rest of your makeup clean and simple—a little pink blush, crisp black liner, and black mascara do the trick.

Try these!

Go for an orange-y red A color so vivid that it looks like it was plucked out of a Lichtenstein, this fiery shade is great against warm complexions. Orange-y shades are hard to pull off, but this one has hints of blue to counteract sallowness.

Try these!

Go for a purple red This deep, deep red is elegant, and the rich blue undertones are especially flattering against dark skin. Stronger shades like these look best with little makeup elsewhere: stick with bold brows and shimmery nude shadow.

How to

Change the Oil in Your Car

Regularly changing your car’s engine oil is one of the most important things you can do to keep your car running well. Fortunately, changing your oil is both easy and inexpensive. So why not save yourself $30 and become a little more independent? By Mary Wilcox

nnel

Before you start...

Be sure you have a safe area to do your oil change. Level, solid ground is a must so that you can safely jack up your car. It’s also a good idea to put something like cardboard or a piece of plywood on the driveway or garage floor underneath the engine in case you spill. You might need to purchase a few things to get started, but the materials are an investment that you can reuse over and over again!

Never change your oil while the engine is hot! Let it cool for a few hours; oil can burn you badly.

What you need:

Ratchet or open end wrench

Oil filter

Beer?

What is beer exactly? By excruciatingly simple definition, beer is any fermented beverage made with a cereal grain. Specifically, beer is made from these four primary ingredients:

Grains

Hops

Grain provides five things to beer: color, flavor, maltose, proteins, and dextrins.

Hops provide beer with bitterness, flavor, aroma, and stability.

Yeast Brewers choose yeast strains based on which style of beer is being made.

P

Water The quality of brewing water is extremely important because beer is about 90 to 95 percent water.

BOTTLE

You’re way classier than that. Beer was made to be experienced from a glass so get rid of the bottle (or even worse, the can) and figure out which glass is best to get the most out of your beer. Pick one of these glasses to drink out of!

HBO’s hit show Girls has taken the representation of women on TV to new and exciting places. So why does it get so much hate?

by Mary Wilcox

H

BO’s Girls, which just finished its third season, has made great strides regarding the representation of women on television. The show, created by and starring Lena Dunham, follows four girls living in Brooklyn and stumbling their way through their mid-twenties. Each girl is vastly different from the others and they each have their own set of issues. While some critics say the show is just a bunch of whiny privileged girls who refuse to grow up, many find it refreshing to see women on TV who aren’t physically perfect and who at 25 don’t have their shit together. They are relatable in many ways and have started countless conversations regarding how women should and should not be portrayed on television. At the center of these discussions is almost always nudity, which there is plenty of. It’s the first show to ever show naked women who don’t have perfect model bodies for other than comedic purposes and to show naked women doing things other than having sex. Girls has gotten a lot of heat for this, with critics saying the nudity is gratuitous and unnecessary because no one wants to see Lena Dunham naked. What some people fail to realize is this is an accurate representation of life as a female. We do not have perfect bodies and we like to walk around naked in our own homes. Sue us.

When compared with other shows with nudity, like HBO’s monster hit Game of Thrones, the nudity on Girls seems almost painfully realistic. The women on Game of Thrones are all stunning and are only ever nude when seducing a man, so it makes sense to the viewer why they are nude. Lena Dunham was recently questioned by a journalist at a press conference about this very issue. He asked, “Why is your character is often naked at random times for no reason?” “It’s a realistic expression of what it’s like to be alive,” Dunham said in response. “If you are not into me that’s your problem and you are going to have to kind of work that out.” The show’s producers also came to Dunham’s defense. Executive producer Jenni Konner said, “This idea that you would accuse a woman of showing her body too much . . . just makes me sort of sick.” Girls has certainly helped in starting the idea that women do not exist for the aesthetic enjoyment of others. It’s an important change in society’s way of thinking that definitely needs to happen. We need to stop being afraid of the female body and instead embrace all of its glorious imperfections, because one of the first steps towards ending body shaming in the real world is stopping it in the world many of us inhabit quite frequently: the world of television.
