Parenting classes are what’s FAPening! We recently received some feedback from you, our community… and we hear you. In response to the requests for work day parenting classes, FAP is happy to announce that we are now offering a Newborn Care class. Consider the Families that make up your neighborhood - each of you can probably identify an expectant couple. Recently, we had a conversation with one such expectant couple at a local dog park. The expectant mother was reflecting on how she wished her mother would be able to pass on all the “grandmotherly advice” that she knew she would need. The expectant mother then went on to explain that she didn’t have any faith that her husband, who happened to be sitting right next to her, was going to be any help. The fear in both of these parents’ eyes was obvious. It’s easy to believe that bringing your baby home is just another well written episode of reality TV, but as often is the case, the true to life experience may be much more terrifying. Bringing your beautiful baby home from the hospital can be a scary proposition. Our Newborn Care Class is designed to help parents learn the fundamentals of diapering, feeding, sleeping and caring for their baby. The class will help parents answer questions like “What does a safe sleep environment or safe home look like?” Our team combines classroom learning and hands on exercises to help you gain confidence in your ability to care for your little one, and to understand what is developmentally appropriate for your brand new bundle of joy. Join us at the Schofield Barracks Army Community Service building (BLDG 690) on the third Wednesday of every month, 14001630, and experience the Newborn Care Class for yourself. Army Community Service wants to be a resource to you and your Families through our parenting classes, play mornings and New Parent Support Program. If you are interested in any of our Family Advocacy Program Parenting Classes, please visit hawaii.armymwr.com/ calendar/event/acs-classes-november-2018 to register.

THE IEP PUZZLE
From the day your children are born, you vow to nurture and protect your precious bundles of joy. With each milestone they reach, you witness their perseverance in conquering challenges. There will come a time when you need to make a decision regarding your child’s education. Choice of education is not an easy decision especially with an Exceptional Family Member (EFM). Your EFM may require an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which follows him/her to every school. Navigating a school system you know very little about, can be overwhelming. The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) System Navigators can guide you through the process and be your support system every step of the way. They always have your child’s best interest in mind and want to help alleviate the stress during the IEP process. EFMP has supported many Families. When SGT Gaethke and his Spouse were asked what they would tell other Families about EFMP, they stated, “EFMP helped guide us during the IEP process, which made the experience less stressful and also helped ensure a more successful IEP meeting.” Each child has a specific set of needs identified during an IEP. The EFMP System Navigators can help the process go more smoothly. Don’t do it alone, seek out the EFMP System Navigators. For more information on where you can find assistance through the EFMP visit our website at: https://hawaii. armymwr.com/programs/exceptional-family-memberprogram or call 655-4ACS.
