Dear Tina: My husband is an intelligent guy. He has a couple of degrees from good colleges and deals with highly classified information in his job, but with our four-month old daughter he is totally CLUELESS! Last week he walked away from her during a diaper change and she rolled off the bed. Yesterday I caught him feeding her a chunk of raw carrot . . . she doesn’t even have one TOOOTH! I’m getting worried to leave them alone because I’m afraid that he going to have her try riding a motorcycle or something. Is there any way I can teach him about babies and what they need? Signed, Terrified New Mom

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks.

Dear Terrified New Mom, While your description of the situation made me chuckle, you are right in taking your daughter’s safety seriously! There are hundreds of ways babies and toddlers can be injured and it can be difficult to foresee hazards when you are new to parenting. I would recommend contacting us here at the New Parent Support Program for a crash course on safety and “baby-proofing” your home. I would also recommend having your husband attend “Daddy Boot Camp,” a class provided monthly here at ACS. The facilitator, Dr. Ascher, (who is a dad himself), equips first time dads with some of the basics of caring for their new babies. Finally, I would find a book or video on infant care that you and your husband can review together; any of the staff at New Parent Support can recommend their favorite resources. These options can help give your husband additional confidence in parenting and a head’s up on your daughter’s stages of development and appropriate activities for her. You can find out more by calling us at 655-4ACS or visiting us online at himwr.com. One last suggestion would be for you to enhance your husband’s confidence in caring for your daughter. Give him opportunities to learn the art of parenting which, as I’m sure you have found from your own experience with your daughter, takes time spent caring for her on your own. He will likely develop additional parenting skills with just a bit more education and experience under his belt. Best wishes, Tina
