Jan 17 • 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Make 2020 YOUR Year: Three Ways to Achieve Your Personal and Professional Goals “5…4…3…2…1...HAPPY NEW YEAR!” My favorite part of ringing in the New Year is the countdown. It is a great feeling, knowing that a new year is upon us, bringing opportunity for change and new beginnings. Whether 2019 was the best year ever (or one you’d like to forget), 2020 is here and January is the perfect time to reflect on the success of what was achieved last year and how you can become a better version of yourself in the new year! Here are three helpful things to consider in setting purposeful goals, whether they are personal, professional, or family centered:
FINANCIAL READINESS Million Dollar Soldier Refresher Training This training provides Soldiers with valuable financial tools. Topics include: saving, credit, investing and big purchases. Jan 6, 13, 27 • 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Money Management This class focuses on the core concepts of personal finances. This class will help you develop a budget, track expenses, and create a system to save and pay your bills on time. Please bring a copy of your LES and a list of bills. https://mypay.dfas.mil Jan 14 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Your Credit Report & Score No credit or bad credit, this class will help you increase your credit score and understand how lenders see you. Bring one copy of your credit report from: annualcreditreport.com Jan 21 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Basic Investing, TSP & BRS Learn the basics of the Thrift Savings Plan and other investment options including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. www.tsp.gov. Jan 28 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Are your goals realistic? There’s probably a good chance a goal of “traveling to the moon by the end of the year” isn’t going to happen; however, setting smaller goals to reach an ultimate, larger goal may be more obtainable. You want that promotion at work and know you need to finish getting your degree to get it? Why not enroll in a class or meet with an academic advisor to set up an education plan? Want to stick to a budget, but don’t want to give up your morning coffee habit? Set an appointment with a financial counselor for free! ACS has a wonderful Financial Readiness Program, with specialists who can help you make a realistic budget while still having the freedom to indulge for your morning coffee run! Setting realistic goals empowers us to have greater control over our lives. Are your goals meaningful? The goals you set are ultimately that…YOURS! If you want to find time to volunteer and give back, why not find a charity or cause that you are passionate about? Maybe you want to get to know others in the neighborhood. Share your talents and interests with others, such as baking cookies and delivering them with a friendly message. Perhaps you are at home with young kids and are looking for opportunities to make friends. Consider giving Play Morning or Toon Time a try! Not only do your kids have the chance to socialize with other kids, but you can meet other parents who may be looking for a friend as well. Setting goals that are meaningful and important to you makes it more likely they will be achieved. Are your goals measurable? One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight and get in shape; however, one of the reasons such great resolutions fail is due to poor planning and tracking. Consider writing your goals down and deciding how you are going to measure your success. Instead of making your goal, “Go to the gym”, write “Go to the gym twice a week. Take waist and weight measurements at the end of each month to track progress. Hold yourself accountable by creating specific goals that can be measured. Goals can be set for various aspects of your life to include personal, professional, or relationship development. Create goals that are realistic, meaningful, and measurable. Achievement of those goals can result in a greater sense of selfworth and a sense of empowerment knowing YOU made them happen. Your ACS and Family Advocacy Program is here to help. Visit himwr.com/acs, walk in or call 808-787-4ACS (4227) for a complete listing of our classes, groups and support options that will help you start your new year strong and with Aloha!
