In preparation of Father’s Day this June, take a moment to tell those special dads in your life how much you appreciate them. Biological fathers, stepfathers, and father figures you’ve grown to value and love…Happy Father’s Day to you! As a Service member, fatherhood can present some extraordinary challenges, involving frequent physical separations from loved ones, non-conventional duty hours, and the inherent stressors involved in mission readiness. However, it is the strengths, values, and skills acquired in military service that can enhance family wellness. Structure and Discipline Structure and self-discipline support individual leadership and leadership in the home. Children look to their parents for direction and safety, creating a great opportunity to exemplify these valued traits. Army Community Service classes such as 1-2-3 Magic, Scream-Free Parenting, and Parenting 101 teach ourselves and our children self-discipline, strengthen areas of confidence, and management of difficult emotions.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness The warrior ethic of perseverance, resiliency, and strength are ingrained during the first few days of Service member basic training. When things get tough, one is taught to push through and endure, and thus, sometimes the idea of “self-care” and asking for help are seen as weaknesses. Occasionally, our thoughts and feelings can create roadblocks in our individual and familial wellness, and recognizing that outside support may be beneficial at times to assist us in navigating these roadblocks is strength.

Basics of Budgeting Sick of living paycheck to paycheck? This class will help you develop a budget, track expenses, and create a system to save and pay your bills on time. Please bring a copy of your LES (available at https://mypay.dfas.mil) and a list of bills. June 11 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Fathers that prioritize their own mental health needs demonstrate to their children that it is OK to ask for help when needed. If you require resources to address your own mental health needs or underlying stresses within the home, our Military Family Life Consultants (MFLCs) are a great resource for providing free and confidential, solution-focused counseling that can be accessed in-person or by phone. Additionally, our New Parent Support Program (NPSP) provides in-home support and education for expectant Families and Families with children ages 0 to 4.

Your Credit Report & Score No credit or bad credit, this class will help you increase your credit score and understand how lenders see you. Bring one copy of your credit report from: annualcreditreport.com June 18 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Basic Investing & TSP Learn the basics of the Thrift Savings Plan and other investment options including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. www.tsp.gov. June 25 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. HiMWR.com

Come visit us at ACS for any self or parenting needs. Our ohana has the tools and resources available to ensure that you thrive in your time in Hawaii in your fatherhood, parenthood, partnership, and individuality.

All parents want their children to receive a quality education. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is required for every child receiving special education services in the public school system and should outline the personalized learning needed for your child to reach their potential. Having an Exceptional Family Member that is not benefiting from, or responding to their Individual Education Plan (IEP) can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, feeling the appropriate support is not available in your child’s school can add to your frustrations. Understanding how your child’s IEP allows for evaluation and changes can lead to more success in your child’s education. When a student is not responding to the interventions and support provided in an IEP, the student support team should conduct a Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA). An FBA is a comprehensive assessment that identifies reasons that a student may be exhibiting challenging behaviors and may result in a recommendation for additional assessments, classroom intervention, and/or the development of a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that addresses the challenging behaviors. If it is determined that a BIP is needed, a qualified Applied Behavior Analysis professional in collaboration with your child’s teacher and other school staff will develop a draft BIP. An FBA and BIP may become necessary for students whose disabilities are manifesting in behaviors which endanger themselves or others, violate student conduct code, or cause significant property damage. Only Licensed Behavior Analysts (LBA), Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Licensed Psychologists and those practicing under the supervision of those professionals may conduct an FBA as well as develop and implement a BIP. If it is determined that a BIP needs to be implemented, the services must be administered by a qualified ABA professional, who will collaborate with the teacher and other school staff to specify the composition of services delivered. There is so much that goes into your child’s education. There are, however, dedicated Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) System Navigators who will advocate for your child and help you both get through the IEP process. As solitary as this journey may seem at times, you’re not alone. For more information on where you can find assistance through the EFMP visit our website at: https://hawaii.armymwr.com/programs/exceptional-family-memberprogram or call 655-4ACS.

Hawaii Boys & Girls Club

CDC HIGHLIGHTS U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii has 6 Child and Youth Services Child Development Centers (CDC).

Military Youth of the Year

Azana Queen Fort Shafter Youth Center, Hawaii

All Army Child and Youth Services Child Development Centers must be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC promotes highquality learning by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. Their vision is that all children thrive and learn in a society dedicated to ensuring they reach their full potential. Each CDC must undergo an accreditation renewal process every 5 years. The facility prepares and receives a site visit by an NAEYC Assessor who determines if the program meets the Early Learning Program Standards. The NAEYC Accreditation demonstrates both a commitment to quality and ensuring that standards are being maintained. USAG Hawaii, Child
