Discover Hawaii September 2016

Dear Tina: My wife PCSed here in July and me and our two-year-old twins (Meghan and Rylan) moved over in September. I was so excited to be in Hawaii because I thought I’d be on the beach with my wife and the girls every weekend. I have since learned my wife works way longer hours here and it is a challenge for a stay-at-home dad to make friendships. I know we’ll adjust to our new normal, but I’m wondering if you have some suggestions for making this transition easier.

Dear Tina

Answers questions for parents who are expecting or have young children age 0 to 3 years old. Tina is a registered nurse, certified breastfeeding specialist, certified infant massage instructor, educator and home visitor with the ACS, New Parent Support Program (NPSP). Submit questions to deartinahawaii@gmail.com or stop by ACS, Schofield Barracks.

- Mr. Mom

Dear Mr. Mom, Welcome to Hawaii! I’m sorry that you are finding the transition difficult. Rest assured help is available. First of all, you are not alone, but part of a growing population of stay-at-home dads, (which I happen to think is super-cool)! However, I can imagine the challenges you face with making friends in your situation. You didn’t mention whether or not you live on post or off, but I would encourage all stay-at-home dads (and moms) to attend Play Mornings at ACS, Schofield. It’s a great place to connect with other parents. Another opportunity is our monthly “Toontime” free movie event. You can find out details on both by calling 655-4ACS. I would also take every opportunity to be where other stay at home dads may be, such as the park with the kids, swim lessons, etc. It takes time to meet people and develop friendships, so hang in there. Best wishes, Tina
