HOW DID THE 25TH ID COME TO BE? The 25th Infantry Division (ID) has been active in Hawaii since October 1, 1941. It was originally composed of the 27th and 35th Infantry Regiments and the 298th Infantry Hawaii National Guard. THE ORIGIN OF THE PATCH In late 1943, the shoulder patch, a taro leaf and a lightning bolt was formally adopted. The taro leaf represents the birth of the 25th ID from the elements of the famous Hawaii Division and the Pacific Region where it was established and fought. The lightning bolt represents speed and aggressive spirit- traits the Division exhibited during battle. The red and gold colors used on the patch are symbolic of the late Hawaiian Monarchy.
THE 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION WILL CELEBRATE ITS 74TH BIRTHDAY, TO INCLUDE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS ENTRY INTO VIETNAM, DURING TROPIC LIGHTNING WEEK. TO COMMEMORATE THIS HISTORIC OCCASION, THE DIVISION HAS PLANNED A WEEK FULL OF EVENTS FOR SOLDIERS AND FAMILIES ALIKE. THIS MONTH’S FEATURE TAKES A CLOSER LOOK INTO THE DIVISION’S UNIQUE HISTORY WHILE KEEPING YOU UP TO DATE WITH THE MANY FAMILY AND MWR EVENTS HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. WHAT DOES TROPIC LIGHTNING MEAN? The nickname originates from a lightning call sign 25th ID used for Division Headquarters arrival on Guadalcanal. The Marines continued to use the nickname by calling the unit Lightning Division. Eventually it was changed to Tropic Lightning because the Division spent time in the tropics. The 25th ID was officially authorized to use the nickname Tropic Lightning in August of 1953. This was the first time in Army history that a nickname was permitted in addition to its regular numerical designation. DIVISION’S MOTTO ~ READY TO STRIKE! ANYTIME. ANYWHERE. The first event among many in the celebration of the 25th Infantry Division is Rocktoberfest! This event has been going on strong since 2007 and is only getting better with time. Originally called Oktoberfest, named after the traditional German festival held once a year in Munich, Germany. This event recognizes and celebrates German culture and heritage while boosting morale for Soldiers and their families. The first Hawaii Garrison Oktoberfest was held on Sills Field and had 800 people in attendance. In 2009, the event name was changed to Rocktoberfest to blend German culture and American Rock & Roll into one annual event the Garrison looks forward to every year. Rocktoberfest is still rooted in German culture. There will be German food for sale along with must have specialty beverages! There will be two bars where adult beverages will be made available for purchase, along with souvenir glass mugs for refills. The Army Music Hawaii O.N.E. Nation Rock Band and DJ Bennie of Royal Events will keep the crowd entertained throughout the evening. Xylene Lennon, Special Events Coordinator says, this year attendance is expected to reach 1500 people. Much has changed since the events humble beginnings besides turn out. Lennon and the Special Events team will be adding children’s activities to the festivities, which was a recommendation from last year’s patron surveys. Parents will be able to purchase child-friendly mugs, so they can participate in a rootbeer float social! Also new for 2015, the public will be able to compete in the competitive games and win prizes! In the past, only Soldiers were able to participate. Games will include, the stein hoist, keg rolling race, and a stein race. One event that has continued through the years is the Mr. & Ms. Rocktoberfest contest. This contest celebrates one man and woman with achievements in four competitions- costume contest, yodeling, musical chairs and stein carrying contest. Winners will receive a gift bag filled with great prizes. Rocktoberfest will begin with an opening ceremony led by the Garrison Commander, Colonel Richard A. Fromm. So come out to Weyand Field, Saturday October 3, at 4 PM dressed in your best traditional German garb and join the celebration as we kick off Tropic Lightning Week!

The registration fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt (must register by Sept. 18) or $12 without a T-shirt. Registration fees are non-refundable. Sign up at any of the DFMWR Fitness Centers. Schofield Barracks leaders and community members are joining together during the month of October to honor victims of domestic violence and to challenge all of us to learn the causes and cures of domestic violence. USARHAW SeniorCommander, MAJ Gen. Charles A. Flynn, will sign a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) on October 2 at 10:30 AM at the Nehelani Conference Center. This year’s theme is “Live by core values to keep your relationship healthy and strong.” DVAM is recognized across the nation every October because domestic violence affects men and women, approximately 30 to 60 percent of domestic violence perpetrators also abuse children in the home, and one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

YOUTH SPORTS FLAG FOOTBALL & CHEER CLINICS Flag Football and Cheerleading clinics on Oct. 17 will start at 9 AM. The clinics will be held at Patriot Park which is located next to Bennett Youth Center on 2251 McMahon Rd. Bldg. 9090. YOUTH SPORTS FLAG FOOTBALL OPENING DAY Flag Football Opening Day on Oct. 24 will start at 9 AM. Location is Watts Field on Schofield Barracks off of A-road. There will be tunnel running and a guest speaker. Once the opening day ceremonies have concluded, football games will begin. YOUTH SPORTS BASKETBALL AND CHEERLEADING REGISTRATION For the youth born 1998 2009. Registration is Oct 1 Oct 31. The season runs from Jan-Mar. Please ensure when the parents register they have complete CYS registration paperwork, Youth Sports registration paperwork, up to date shot record, physical to last through the season, and birth certificate. If parent’s registering do not have up to date and completed paperwork with
registration they will not be able to sign their youth up until all requirements have been met. The cost is $55 for both sports. If you have a cheerleading uniform from previous seasons the cost is $20.
YOUTH SPORTS HOME SCHOOL SESSIONS Schofield Barracks and AMR Youth Sports has re-started their Home School program. This program is free to our AMR / Ft. Shafter / Camp Smith / Schofield Barracks / Wheeler and HMR Home School Community. Home School program for AMR will be every Tuesday from 10 AM - 12 PM. 4 - 7 year olds session will run from 10 - 11 AM. 8 - 16 year olds session will run from 11 AM - 12 PM. For Schofield Barracks, Home School classes meet at Bennett Youth Center on Schofield Barracks. The program will run Tuesday from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM for all age groups Youth Sports will provide fitness activities such as basketball, croquet, flag football, etc. Health and Fitness activities such as 4-H Health Rocks, Hiking Trails, and bullying.
