Air Purification Change Your Media

Reasons to Change Pellets Media capacity has been consumed

There are two primary factors that determine if the capacity for removing contaminants has been consumed in a pellet media bed, thereby requiring a change out: Flux (loading rate) of contaminant into the media. Flux is determined by the concentration of the contaminant in the airstream, the velocity of the airflow through the media, and the actual capacity of the media to remove the contaminant. Working capacity of the media. Working capacity is determined by the impregnate chemistry and loading, the pellet size, and the high activity of the activated carbon precursor.

MWV deep bed pellet systems are designed with enough capacity to remove typical concentrations found in pulp and paper mill environments for a period of 36-48 months. In areas of high contaminant concentrations, the beds may only last 24-36 months. Once the capacity has been consumed, contaminants pass through the bed and into the protected spaces without being removed, effectively flooding the room with contaminated air. *Changing carbon does not reverse damage done to systems by contaminated air.

Reasons to Change Pellets Media physically breaks down

WVIS-XL (extended life) pellets were introduced in the marketplace over ten years ago, and were formulated to maintain their shape and integrity for a period of four years of operation. The media is subject to both diurnal and seasonal swings in temperature and humidity. In addition, it is subjected to constant vibration. The binders are designed to withstand the demands of continuous service in these dynamic conditions for a period of 48 months. The extruded activated carbon pellet will begin to physically breakdown after this target lifetime. The granular residue will plug the screen material that both supports the carbon bed and allows unrestricted airflow through the media. The build up of degraded pellet material also leads to channeling in the media, which can allow untreated, contaminant laden air to bypass the media and enter the protected space. If the bed is not changed and is allowed to continue to degrade, the material can begin to break through the filtering systems and dust the protected space with spent carbon material. An obstructed bed can also significantly restrict the air supply to the protected space, resulting in the loss of positive pressure in the room. These conditions can cause the space to literally pull in contaminated air from the outside into the room.

Corrosive damage to electronics is not reversible.

Air quality must be maintained and monitored in order to adequately protect valuable assets. Every moment the carbon bed is not removing contaminants, is a moment when damage is occurring that will eventually shut down equipment.

Reasons to Change Versacomb™ Media Media capacity has been consumed

A standard Series HM® system from MWV contains Versacomb™ media. A typical four pass system mimics the performance of a traditional deep bed pellet scrubber.

there may be little capacity for removal remaining in the bed. It is advisable to change the beds as soon as possible following a known release of contaminants in the area.

In a typical pulp and paper mill environment, the standard Series HM® system requires one stage of media to be removed, all other stages to be rotated one position and a new stage to be installed on an annual basis.

Pellet-based Systems or Versacomb™ Systems MWV has offered pellet vapor adsorbers in the marketplace for the protection of assets from the damaging effects of corrosive gases in industrial facilities for over 30 years, while Versacomb™ Systems have been commercially available since 2005.

This annual rotation of Versacomb™ media, and the replacement of one stage, allows more complete utilization of the media (as compared to pellet systems that have as much as 33% of their capacity remaining at the time the pellets are changed). Annual rotation of media is critical to the performance of Versacomb™ systems. Late rotation will involve rotating two or more stages in order to maintain the integrity of the system. Media obstructed by poor filter maintenance Versacomb™ system media does not physically breakdown over time, but can become occluded with dust and debris if the filter maintenance program is not properly managed. If the media is blocked, contaminated air is not flowing uniformly through the system and can consume removal capacity unevenly. Physically obstructed Versacomb™ media will also cut off airflow to the pressurized space, leaving the room unprotected. Known catastrophic contaminant release The most obvious reason for replacing any type of media (pellets or Versacomb™) is right after a known catastrophic release of a contaminant in the area near the protected space and the operating equipment containing the media. Large releases will negatively impact the media life for obvious reasons. Events can be even more critical when they occur at or near the end of the normal media life, as

Initial systems were designed and deployed in MWV Pulp and Paper mills to improve uptime performance and improve air quality from pulp mill electronic rack rooms to wastewater treatment plant control centers. ISA standards were written considering the MWV corrosion research results. MWV has built a strong reputation by providing superior equipment designs, effective specialized media, and exemplary technical service support. Typical customers include pulp and paper, petrochemical plants and refineries, as well as municipal and private wastewater treatment plants.

MWV Media WVIS-XL Pellets are made from wood-based, chemically activated carbon in the USA. The media is specially formulated to extend media life and many applications rely on this media. Versacomb™ media is quickly becoming the media of choice for the majority of applications. MWV’s Versacomb™ technology offers significant advantages over traditional pellet media.
