Six Top Women Bowlers to Return to TV in Women’s Series Showdown

newly-elected USBC Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia. “An event as unique as the Women’s Series Showdown deserves a unique format that will showcase the competitive skills of these great players,” said PBA COO and Vice President Tom Clark. The Petraglia Scoring System ignores pinfall, but counts the number of balls thrown to clear the deck in each frame. A strike thus equals a “1” and a typical spare would result in a “2” for the frame. A 7-10 split, however, might require three balls for a “3” and a miss could escalate the score for the frame.

Under the Petraglia system, the lowest score wins. USBC-Sponsored Season-Ending Special Event to Players will bowl their entire game on one lane. The majority of the players charged pleaded guilty and paid the $250 fine. But Chimento, Scott Richards, Michael Williamson, Jeremy Brestel, and John Taylor Willis opted to take it to court and have their fates decided by a judge. Attorney Jeff Phillips has taken the case and will argue for the defendants that Texas hold’em is a game of skill. Phillips said in a previous interview, “The particular law in South Carolina is so antiquated and so garbled that it’s virtually indecipherable. At some point, you need to look at the facts. Poker is not like any other game in the casino. Poker is predominantly a game of skill; therefore it should be treated differently.” Sexton, long-time poker player, author, commentator, and “ambassador” for the game of poker, will take the stand in Charleston, South Carolina today to use his vast knowledge and background in an attempt to convince the judge that the law is not only outdated, but poker should not be categorized as anything but a game of skill. Thus, poker should not be included in the enforcement of the 1802 law and the defendants should be found not guilty. Mike Sexton (photo courtesy World Poker Tour)

Also scheduled to testify as an expert witness is Robert Hannum, a statistics professor at the University of Denver who recently assisted the defense in a Colorado trial in which the defendants, poker players, were found not guilty of breaking The trial has been a long time in the making. The $20 buy-in hold’em sessions were a welcome reprieve each week…until the game was raided on April 4, 2006 by six police officers, with guns drawn and sporting full protective SWAT gear, who seized several thousand dollars in cash. Bob Chimento and numerous other players were charged with breaking the law by playing a game of chance. The law, in fact, was penned in 1802 and bans the playing of any game with cards or dice in a person’s home.

Rested Duke Wins Denny’s Dick Weber Open Duke’s 32nd Win Ties with Parker Bohn III for Fifth Place on the All-Time PBA Tour Titles List FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (February 8, 2009) – A week-long break on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour was a welcome relief for PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke. Coming off a disappointing 39th place-finish in the H & R Block Tournament of Champions two weeks ago, a rested Duke defeated Michael Fagan 278-168 in the championship match to win the Denny’s Dick Weber Open Sunday at Fountain Bowl. “That week off was everything,” said Duke, who was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame the same week as the Tournament of Champions. “I needed it mentally—if there wasn’t this break on Tour I would have probably taken a week off anyway.” Duke’s win was the 32nd of his career tying him for fifth all-time with fellow Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III. In addition to coming into the tournament with renewed focus, the Clermont, Fla., resident admitted to a little added inspiration from the late Dick Weber. “When I started the practice session I noticed Dick’s photo on a banner and I thought if I’m going to win this tournament I better bowl like Dick Weber,” said the 44-year-old Duke. “It means a lot.” For Duke it was his third victory of the season having won the PBA World Championship to start the season, becoming the first player to win three consecutive majors. He also won the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles with Liz Johnson in January. Duke, who won a $35,000 first prize, held off the hard-charging Fagan who won three consecutive matches from his No. 5 qualifying position to get to the championship match. The 28-year-old Fagan opened the stepladder by defeating reigning PBA Player of the Year and 10-time titlist Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 204-183, then beat four-time Tour titlist Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., 256-223, and Hall of Famer and 34-time titlist Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 243-201. “I really didn’t have high expectations and I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me,” said Fagan, who was trying for his first individual PBA Tour title. “I felt good going into the last match but the lanes were breaking down pretty quickly. I was just hoping I could get one more good game out of it. “But when Norm’s on his game there’s really not much you can do.” Fagan, of Patchogue, N.Y., won the PBA Exempt Doubles Classic with Danny Wiseman in 2008 for his lone Tour victory.

LPGA hits the ground running in 2009 Members raise the bar for competition and education on, off the course DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - As the LPGA nears its sixth decade in existence, 2009 looks to be one of its most thrilling, and, undoubtedly, surprising seasons yet. With a minimum of 30 official events, as well as the highly-anticipated Solheim Cup showdown in August, players and fans have plenty to be excited for. Rolex Rankings’ number one and three-time Rolex Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa, of Mexico, will start the season backed up by 21 victories in the past three seasons, as well as 37 additional top-10 finishes in 72 events. In a couple of weeks, she will open her 2009 campaign at the Honda LPGA Thailand, looking to make it the fourth consecutive year she has posted a top-five finish in her opening event. Well on her way to becoming the fastest player to earn $14 million in her LPGA career, one of the only questions remaining unanswered is - just how many more of these milestones will Ochoa break? As impressive as Ochoa’s high-level of play is, there are many others nipping at her heels. Already, American Paula Creamer is shattering Ochoa’s ‘fastest’ money records, while accumulating wins along the way. Her career-best four season wins in 2008 have Creamer on the verge of gaining her first major championship victory, while holding a commanding lead in the race for the U.S. Solheim Cup team, which would be her third appearance in nearly five years on Tour. To continue her undefeated streak in Solheim Cup competition, Creamer will rely on her potential teammates, which look to include veterans like Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford and Juli Inkster. Adding to the drama, points for 2009 are at one-anda-half times their normal value. U.S. Team Captain Beth Daniel, along with her assistants Kelly Robbins and Meg Mallon, have a tough year ahead of them to assemble the strongest possible team to face the European Team, led by Allison Nicholas (captain) and Liselotte Neumann (assistant captain). After losing in Halmstad, Sweden, in 2007, the European Team has their sights set on an American soil upset. Laura Davies, the only player in Solheim Cup history to have competed in the first 10 stagings of the biennial event, will potentially join Rolex Rankings’ number four Suzann Pettersen in the showdown against the States. The 11th edition of The Solheim Cup will be staged Aug. 21-23, 2009, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. It is hard to believe that one year ago the 2008 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year, Yani Tseng, of Taiwan, was making her debut as a LPGA Tour member. Her campaign began with a memorable firstcareer LPGA win via a four-hole, sudden-death playoff against Maria Hjorth at the second major of the season, the McDonald’s LPGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola. This year’s 21-member rookie class, led by Jiyai Shin, who won an unprecedented three LPGA Tour events as a non-member in 2008, has already made their presence known on Tour. Joining Shin is Florida’s Vicky Hurst, who set a record on the Duramed FUTURES Tour in 2008 for most single-season earnings, and Texas’ Stacy Lewis, who accumulated two top-six finishes in seven starts on the LPGA last year and owned medalist honors at

Michelle Wie

the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament. Michelle Wie, of Hawaii, first competed on the LPGA Tour via a sponsor’s exemption in 2002. With forty-eight events and 13 top-10 finishes under her belt as a non-member, Wie, along with her fellow rookies, are hoping that playing week-in and week-out against the world’s best will challenge their game and equal successes of their own. Additional branches of the LPGA - the Teaching & Club Professionals (T&CP) and LPGAUSGA Girls Golf (Girls Golf) are also celebrating important milestones in 2009. With more than 1,200 members and growing, the LPGA T&CP has been a leading contributor to the growth of the game of golf for the past 50 years. LPGA T&CP members complete one of the most comprehensive education programs in professional golf, and their participation and positive influence on the grassroots level of golf is undeniable. Many LPGA T&CP members also serve as site directors for the more than 180 Girls Golf clubs around the nation. Started in 1989 by Sandy LaBauve, Girls Golf reaches out to girls ages 7 to 17 to expose them to the game of golf and the positive benefits of friendship and competition in a non-intimidating environment. Many of today’s up-and-coming stars are past members of the Girls Golf program. In January, the LPGA also announced LaBauve and two-time LPGA Tour winner Brittany Lincicome - also a past Girls Golf participant from Florida - will serve as the program’s national ambassadors. The level and depth of talent in the LPGA - from its teachers to its coaches to its Tour players - is at an all-time high. Down the street, or around the world, the LPGA will continue to bring the best of women’s golf to its students and fans throughout 2009. Expect Tour veterans to be challenged by rookies for the opportunity to hoist that trophy on the 18th green each and every week. If history repeats itself, the journey of a Rolex FirstTime Winner to that moment will be truly unforgettable. With the re-launch of the LPGA’s ‘Kids in Free’ policy, adults and children, alike, are encouraged to come out and share in these moments with the game’s current and future stars all season long.

PBA Tour Players Limited to Two Plastic Balls in Exciting Test of Bowling Skill SEATTLE, Wash. (February 9, 2009) – Perhaps the most anticipated and certainly the most controversial event in this 50th Anniversary season of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour is the first-ever GEICO Plastic Ball Championship to be held at Brunswick Zone in Wheat Ridge, Colo., Feb. 18-22. Debates in the bowling world rage on as to what bowling styles and players will succeed in this radical departure from the usual, generally unlimited equipment rules. In the Plastic Ball Championship, each of the 64 players in the main draw will be given two identical, unmarked plastic bowling balls with pancake weight blocks, branded only by the PBA 50th Anniversary logo. “Plastic” polyester balls like the ones that will be used in this tournament are used today almost exclusively for spare shooting due to the balls’ tendency to go straight on the majority of today’s lane conditions. Plastic was the most popular form of bowling ball in the 1970s and early 80s. Today’s most popular bowling balls are composed of resin with exotic weight blocks, which enhance the balls’ ability to hook. “Having all the players in a PBA Tour event use the same, low technology bowling ball could be likened to the International Race of Champions auto racing series where all drivers compete in identical cars,” said PBA Chief Operating Officer Tom Clark. “Normally, those same bowlers choose from hundreds of bowling balls of different makes and models with varying characteristics.” Because all of the exempt players seeded into the main draw of 64 qualified by virtue of their success in tournaments with unlimited bowling ball technology, the event’s Tournament Qualifying Round will be contested with normal, unlimited technology (as always, equipment must be PBA product registered), on the traditional Cheetah lane pattern. Another reason for the TQR being a separate tournament not limited to plastic balls is the main draw event will use just one exact replica ball, which is impossible to do in the TQR. Also, if the TQR players’ personal plastic balls were the only balls allowed in the TQR, there would be the potential for dramatic inequality from ball to ball. Top players in attendance included Jeremy Sossei, Oscar Bonilla, Ignacio Chavez, Fran Crimi, Empire State Champion Marc “Spain” Vidal, Liz Ford, Sean “Alaska” Morgan, Bobby Blackmore & Tony Robles. Day one had its share of surprising matches and stand out players. Tour owner Tony Robles started out strong with wins over Thomas Wan 8-4 & Marc Vidal 8-3 but ran into trouble against Jeremy Sossei, losing 8-5. Robles fought back through the one-loss side until he ran into Oscar Bonilla, losing 9-7 and finishing 7th/8th. Liz Ford started the Predator tour season in winning fashion. Liz won highest finishing female, easily finishing 3 rounds higher than any of the other ten females in the event. But this wasn’t enough for the WPBA pro as she fought hard at the end of day one defeating Pete Tascarella Sr. 7-4 to return for day two action to play Pete Tascarella Jr., the son in the family of cue makers. Pete Jr. couldn’t tame Miss Ford either and lost to her 9-6. Liz continued to play strong against Jeremy Sossei keeping it close in the beginning, but Jeremy took control of the match at 3-3 and never looked back. Ford lost 9-4 to Sossei, finishing 9th–12th. Other standout players included John Alicea, who continues to push and test many of the tours top players. On day one, John scored big wins over Victor Nau 8-4 and Jeremy Sossei 9-5.

Day two saw John struggle and lose to Mhet Vergara 9-2 and Oscar Bonilla 9-5 leaving Alicea to settle for 5th/6th. Our other 5th/6th finisher was Jerry Tarantola who came out swinging on day one. With his monster break on his side, Tarantola easily defeated Jonathan Trager 8-0, Caroline Pao 8-3, and Pete Tascarella Jr. 8-2. Tarantola looked good playing Bobby Blackmore on day two with a 9-7 win but hit a wall name Ignacio Chavez, losing 9-2. Tarantola seemed to lose his steam and became another Sossei victim finishing with a 9-5 loss. Mhet Vergara had his best Predator 9-Ball tournament ever staying undefeated on day one with wins over “the other” Allison Fischer, Andrew Kane, Chris Laz, and Lionel Rivera . On day two, Vergara continued to have success with a close call against Holden Chin winning 9-8 & John Alicea 9-2. Vergara then took on Ignacio Chavez for the hot seat. Ignacio played incredible pool this tournament with convincing wins over Dave Danchak 8-3, Steve Wright 8-5, Sean “Alaska” Morgan 8-5, Mike Fingers 9-2, & Jerry Tarantola 9-2. In the hot seat match, Chavez was the clear winner defeating Vergara 9-4. Oscar Bonilla had a long road to the final three. He started out strong defeating Justin Muller 8-4 and Rob Omen 8-0, but lost to Holden Chin on the hill. On the one-loss side, Bonilla fought back defeating Thomas Wan 7-2, Lionel Rivera 9-5, Mike Fingers 9-2, Tony Robles 9-7, John Alicea 9-5 and made Jeremy Sossei settle for 4th place with a 9-5 win. Semi-final action saw Bonilla and the recently defeated Vergara battle for a chance at Chavez in the finals. Vergara appeared focused but tight during the match against Bonilla. Bonilla capitalized on the tension and defeated Vergara 9-4 for a chance at Chavez in the finals. The final was all Chavez. The rested Chavez seemed calm and poised throughout the match and dominated Bonilla. The final race to 11 seemed one-sided as Chavez was beating Bonilla 9-4. Bonilla mounted a comeback closing the gap 10-7, but Chavez put an end to Bonilla’s run and finished the set winning the tournament with an 11-7 final score. The tour also started an amateur event on Sundays for B-C-D players. Players that played in the Open event on Saturday got a lower entry fee in the event which includes bonus points for the player of the year standings. Of the 26 players, Romeo Singh and Jose Soto ended up in the finals. In the end, Soto took the 1st place prize, defeating Singh 7- 4. For payouts and standings visit: www.predator9balltour.com

Pro Pool Charity Event Poison Cues presents the Pro Pool Charity Challenge in Austin, TX. Professional players will team up for a night of challenge matches to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The challenge will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, February 16th at G-Cue Billiards in Austin, TX. The event will feature two WPBA pros, Sarah Rousey and Heather Pulford, as well as Shane VanBoening and James Davis, Sr., both of which are former Texas Open 9-ball Champions. Rousey, a resident of Bloomington, IL, had a recent top 3 finish at the WPBA Tour Championships in Florida. She finished the 2008 season ranked 12th on the WPBA points list. Her opponent, Heather Pulford, also a regular on the WPBA tour, will be competing for her hometown crowd as G-Cue Billiards is her home poolhall. VanBoening and James Davis, Sr. have played against each other several times over the past year at various tournaments around Texas, beginning with the Texas Open where VanBoening eventually captured the title. Spectators will get to see a re-match of the Houston Open finals where Davis defeated VanBoening. Proceeds raised will benefit the American Diabetes Association, a charity that is of special importance to Sarah Rousey. At the age of 10, Sarah was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. “Having something wrong with you at a young age really scares other kids. I got to be the butt of the joke or people thought they could catch Diabetes by being around me. All of this fueled me to play pool” Sarah said. “When I was 20, I had a serious low blood sugar scare which landed me in the hospital. I decided it was time to get an insulin pump. When I made this decision I told myself it was time to be an advocate and not be ashamed. I started educating people rather than hiding. It’s amazing how understanding people can be when you just let them in.” A special thanks to Poison Cues for their support and contribution of cues and products to be raffled at the event. America’s #1 Cue Shaper and Scuffer

Dealer Inquiries Invited. 1-888-CUECUBE CUE CUBE CORPORATION

Manufacurer and Distributor of Quality Billiard Accessories

WHO WE ARE Like many tip tools and cue accessories, the Cue Cube was made by someone who wanted a tool for themselves. Others in their local poolroom wanted one and it turned into a business. In 1982 the “company” was purchased and at the suggestion of some pro players the curvature and grit roughness were modified, though the cube shape and metal base were retained. The Cue Cube Corporation, maker of the “Original Cue Cube” is celebrating its 26th year as one of the premier manufacturers of billiard cue shaping devices in the United States. In fact the trademarked names “Cue Cube” and “Shaft Slicker” are so prevalent throughout the billiard world that, like Scotch brand cellophane tape, or Kleenex tissue, users of tip shapers or maintenance tools tend to refer to all of them as Cue Cubes or Shaft Slickers. The Cue Cube has become one of the most successful and widely-recognized products in the billiard world. Cue Cube Corporation currently distributes its products to countries around the globe. The Shaft Slicker, a treated leather/nylon item for shaft maintenance, was put into production and marketed in the mid-80s and in 1993 the two items were packaged together for the first time as the “Pool Cue Maintenance Kit”. Later developments adapted the Cue Cube for attachment on a key chain plus at least six different colors are now available for the cube bodies. In addition the labels, traditionally silver, have now included a gold edition and a patriotic red, white and blue model. This small “started-in-a-garage” company from Milwaukee, like the little engine that could, is still going strong, with steadily increasing sales year by year. Cue Cube is very proud to have competed successfully in a market with a lot of import competition. They are proud to stamp “MADE IN U.S.A.” on their every product. Thanks to Bruce Venzke and Tom Shaw. The above was excerpted from their articles in Pool and Billiard Magazine. (12-02 & 1-04)

Featured Products History - The Tip Pik™ The Tip Pik™ was the first of its kind and is the original because of its classic enduring design. Sometime in the early 1990’s Mr. Billiards™ thought that the tip tapping tools commonly used in billiard rooms was antiquated and needed some refinement. When the new tool was in the design phase, Mr. Billiards™ recognized that it needed to be easy to use, conveniently carried in any pocket (eliminating the bulk) and affordable. He began with a tubular brass part, added phonograph needles to it and locked it into place with some special glue. He employed a R&D team and after extensive research and countless hours of troubleshooting, he created an initial prototype. A winner soon emerged utilizing 42 precisely placed pins well known for their perforating action. This was when the world famous Tip Pik™ was born. With only a few minor refinements, the Tip Pik™ remains pretty much as you see it today. Now with hundreds of thousands of Classic Tip Pik’s in circulation throughout the world, the Tip Pik™ has become a must have pool cue accessory.

WPBA Touring Pro Kelly Fisher Signs Multi-Year Sponsorship with

The original TIP PIKtm is now endorsed by Kelly Fisher. The #1 WPBA player has inked a multi-year sponsorship agreement with the manufacturers of the world famous TIP PIKtm. After using the TIP PIK for many years, sponsoring the full line of TIP PIKtm products was a natural fit for Kelly.

Why - Using proper english has long been a fundamental technique used in the sport of billiards. Proper use of the Tip Pik™ increases the tip’s ability to retain chalk thereby allowing the player to employ the proper english during a shot. Use of the Tip Pik™ tool is necessary to assist in the application and retention of chalk to the tip of a cue stick. There is no better tool for this purpose! That is why the Tip Pik™ is considered “the greatest tip tool on earth”. Although using the Tip Pik™ before each shot is not necessary, every player should keep a Tip Pik™ handy when needed. Ask us or your local dealer about the Tip Pik™ Classic, the Classic Key Chain, the Shadow and the very popular Shadow Chalker about the advantages of each. Today - The Tip Pik™ has become one of the most copied tip tools throughout the billiard industry, and although tried, copy cats have never been able to duplicate the all-around quality, convenience, simplicity and affordability of the brass Classic Tip Pik™. Relatively few modifications have occurred throughout the years, and so the Tip Pik™ remains virtually the same as its original design. Nowhere can you find the solid durability of the brass Tip Pik™. The Tip Pik™ is 100% made in the U.S.A. and each one comes with a full lifetime warranty. Ask any local billiards dealer about the

“original” classic Tip Pik™.

You can find the full line of TIP PIKtm products at your local billiard retailer.

Just as some patterns show up on the table more often than others, so do some players show up at tournaments more often than others. For example, you’ll walk into a tavern and see players you saw at another tavern tournament, or someone who played in a league you played in. Just as you have to leaarn how to play patterns, you have to learn how to play those players. Now what I mean by this is you should learn these players weaknesses in their game as well as their strengths. You do not have to be playing a player to learn this, just watch him/her shooting in between your matches. Here are some weaknesses I look for in a player: 1. Can he/she shoot over a ball well? 2. Can he/she make shots when the cue is frozen to the rail? 3. Can he/she play combinations? 4. Can he/she bank? 5. Can he/she make long shots? 6. Can he/she make rail shots? Now here’s where this information can come into play to your advantage. In a game of 8-ball, let’s say you have decided to play safe. You’re on the eight and your opponent has six or seven balls left on the table. You’re going to have to let him/her see some kind of shot. Let him see a bank shot if he’s weak in his banks, or a tough combination if he struggles in that area. Leave him frozen to the rail if you haven’t seen him make a shot like that since dinosaurs were roaming around. Here’s another example of a time to consider his weak point. You are considering taking a tough shot. Your chance of making this shot are 50/50. Think where the cue ball will end up if you miss. If it happens to leave your opponent on a shot he is weak in, then I would try to make the shot. If it leaves him an easy out, then I would be thinking a lot harder about my option to play safe. When some players find your weakness and use it against you and it costs you a tournament practice that part of your game until you’ve mastered it. Then the next time he plays you that way, you’ll walk up to the table with confidence, fire the shot in, sending your opponent to the losers bracket. About Viking Cue In the early 60’s Viking Cue Mfg., Inc. founder Gordon Hart began making two-piece pool cues in the basement of his poolroom in Stoughton, Wisconsin. Gordon traveled to various tournaments to sell his cues. In a short period of time, Viking cues became popular with many of the top players. Viking was incorporated in 1965. By the late 1960s, Gordon spent more time making cues, so he sold the poolroom and moved the cue business to its present location in Madison, Wisconsin. He expanded production capabilities and began selling cues throughout the United States and abroad. Viking grew steadily through the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, Gordon’s children, Robin, Barry and Darcy became involved with the business. Then in 1986 the major motion picture, The Color of Money, was released and created a boom in the billiard industry. Sales of Viking cues skyrocketed, and the company experienced phenomenal growth as a result.

By the mid-1990s, Viking hired a full sales staff to handle the needs of their constantly growing list of distributors and dealers throughout the world. At the same time, Robin and Barry took over the day-to-day operations, and granddaughter Shawna became involved with the company. Nancy was very active in the Billiard Congress of America in the 1990’s, serving on its board of directors. Years earlier, she served on the board of the Billiard & Bowling Institute of America, and was their First Female President. In 1994, Gordon was honored with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Cue Makers Association. Viking is known for its generous support of various tournaments and organizations including Nationally televised events, the Viking Nine Ball Tour, Super Billiards Expo, VNEA, BCA League and National Wheelchair Poolplayer Association Inc. In the 2000’s, Barry became active in the Billiard Congress of America, serving on its board of directors. Grandson Justin joined Viking to continue the tradition of the family business.

As the 1980s came to a close, Gordon began updating machinery and investing in state-of-the-art As one of the oldest manufacturers of cues in equipment to ensure a quality product. Promotional America, Viking has the strictest quality control in efforts increased with an extensive advertising and the industry. The continual upgrading of machinery public relations program coordinated by Gordon’s and superior technology is what makes Viking the top wife, Nancy, which helped make Viking a household cue manufacturer in the industry. UNITED STATES WINS WORLD CUP OF TABLE SOCCER IN NANTES, FRANCE - CombinedWorld Championship and World Cup Tournament FeaturesWorld’s Top “Foosball” Superstars from 36 Nations Nantes, France - The United States has just claimed top honors in the world of table soccer in a decisive victory at the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) World Cup of Table Soccer. The tournament, held January 8-11th in Nantes, France, featured 48 men and women’s national teams and for the first time, the event was combined with the ITSF World Championships, drawing over 500 athletes from 36 countries worldwide. Both events saw numerous extremely intense matches and quite a few surprises in the most spectacular table soccer event of the year. In the World Cup, the USA’s men’s team found stiff competition in the final against the Netherlands, but otherwise cruised past most of its competition including arch-rival France, who had stunned the USA at the last World Cup of Table Soccer in Hamburg, Germany in 2006. But perhaps the most unexpected upset was the very narrow victory of Luxembourg’s outspoken Yannick Correia over the USA’s Tony Spredeman in the final of World Championships Men’s Singles. Spredeman, who despite a back injury early in the season had been the dominant force all year, more than made up for that loss with exceptional performances in all his World Cup matches. Meanwhile, the women’s side of the competition was also intense, with top contenders like World #1-ranked Tessa Otten-Kerkhof (Netherlands), multi-timeWorld Championship winner Samantha Di Paolo of Switzerland, and all-time leading women’s money-winner Cindy Head (USA) all coming up short to Austria’s Verena Rohrer in World Championship Women’s Singles. The tournament was sanctioned by the ITSF and hosted by the French Table Soccer Federation (Fédération Française de Football de Table). As a true test of all around foosball skills, competition took place on all five ITSF “Official” styles of tables: Brunswick’s Tornado Table Soccer™, Bonzini™, Garlando, Roberto-Sport and Lehmacher Tec Ball. Sponsors of the event included Region Pays de la Loire, Ville de Nantes, 20 Minutes, and Le Mouv, among others. Live web-streaming of key matches was provided courtesy of Inside Foos Productions and www.netfoos.tv This combined tournament served as both the final event of the 55 tournament 2008 ITSF World Pro Table Soccer Tour, and as the kickoff of the tour for 2009. Other major tour events for 2009 are already scheduled for France, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands and the United States. Even more qualifying events are planned for countries as diverse as Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Japan, Poland, Mexico, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. Indeed, the 2009 tour is expected to be the largest world table soccer tour ever!! Read the full story and results at: CLICK HERE

And, with many top Masters playing exceptionally strong in preparation for the upcoming $50,000 Valley-Tornado International Table Soccer Championships in Las Vegas, NV, matches are expected to be extremely intense! Competition will include categories for men and women from beginner to Master, and specialty events such as “Forward Shootout” and “4-on-4″. The tournament is open to all spectators, and there is no admission fee to enter the tournament area. Opening events begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23rd with most finals occurring on Sunday the 25th. Players can register for events on site, and all competition will be on Brunswick’s Tornado Table Soccer™ tables.

How It Works The Jump Buddy is a sturdy hand-bridge that provides a stable platform for this shot. It can be used as a training aid, or in regular play. The Jump Buddy provides a stable platform for the bridge hand. It also fits easily over another ball, allowing the player to bring the hand closer to the cue ball. This improves the accuracy of the shot

The Jump Buddy is a handsupporting bridge. It will help you learn to make jump shots, masse’ shots, and support your hand bridging over other balls.

Shots near the rails present additional challenges. If there is not room to use the standard tripod, one of the legs can be replaced with a short “rail leg.” The Jump Buddy includes: The 8-ball tripod with three removable legs, a single shorter rail leg, and the carrying pouch. The Jump-Buddy supports the hand during difficult pool shots, including jump shots and masse shots. Includes carrying bag and instructions. Price: $29.95 Availble from: www.Jump-Buddy.com

Follow and Draw drill

Eight-Ball Nine-Ball One-Pocket Straight Pool

This is a great little exercise to learn how to follow and draw for basic position zones. Place one ball on the foot spot (8-ball) and another on the headspot (9-ball). Place a third ball in the dead center of the table. Last, place the cue-ball anywhere on the straight line that allows you to pocket the center ball in a corner pocket and either follow or draw for postion on the next ball. You can shoot one rack of balls to follow to cue ball position A for the 8-ball, and another rack of balls to draw to cue ball position B for position on the 9-ball. Your position goal should be to achieve either straight in position on the next shot, or at least a comfortable confident cut shot, no more than say a 30 degree angle.

Bassmaster Elite Series Selects Wheeler Lake for 3rd Tournament Location Decatur, Ala. – The Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announced Wheeler Lake has been chosen for the 3rd tournament location of the Bassmaster Elite Series. Set for April 2-5, 2009, the most elite anglers in bass fishing will convene in Decatur for a shot at reeling in some big smallmouth bass. “Last year was the first time for the Elite Series to appear in Decatur,” said Tami Reist, president of Decatur-Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Results were phenomenal not only for the anglers themselves in terms of fishing quality but for Decatur and Morgan County as well. The tournament generated an economic impact of approximately $600,000.” Each Elite-level event will receive television coverage on ESPN2’s The Bassmasters, which airs at 9 a.m. ET on Saturdays. Additionally, www.bassmaster. com and www.espnoutdoors.com will provide fishing fans with real-time leaderboards, streaming footage from weigh-ins, photo galleries and analysis at all Elite events. The exposure generated from television and internet coverage equates to over $1 million in free publicity for Wheeler Lake and Morgan County. Alabama’s second largest reservoir, Wheeler Lake covers approximately 68,300 acres stretching from Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville providing 1,063 miles of shoreline. Over the course of 4 days, 107 anglers caught over 3,206 pounds of fish during the 2008 tournament. “Bass fishing has been and continues to be the most popular type of fishing offered at Wheeler Lake. I think the Bassmaster Elite Series realize the treasure we have with Wheeler Lake and we look forward to another exciting tournament in 2009,” adds Reist. With it’s nearly $11 million total prize purse, the Bassmaster Elite Series and its 11 events make up bass fishing’s most competitive and lucrative league. The Elite Series is just what the name implies: a stage for the most elite anglers in the sport. The schedule runs coast-to-coast and through all phases of the seasons of bass fishing. In the main event, Lucasi 10-Ball Classic Champ & Predator Rep Williams took on Mezz Cues Rep & US Open Champion Immonen first in a race to 5 10-Ball match. Immonen took a 3-1 lead before Williams mounted a comeback to tie at 4-4. A missed 3ball by Mika gave Charlie a chance for an out and he ran down with two balls left. Unfortunately he missed position on the 8-Ball with the 10-Ball nearby, and gave Immonen the 5-4 win. Read the full story by clicking:

The trio of champions started with a free one hour clinic teaching fans special tips on draw shots, drills, speed control, kicking, and the break. The room was packed with fans squeezing next to each other to get a glimpse of the instruction by some of pool’s greatest. Next a limited nine spots for VIPs were all sold out to challenge the pros in a race to 5 games playing 9-Ball. Although nobody could upset the champions, many won their share of games and excitement with one fortunate fan winning a new jump cue for winning four games, more than any other amateur. Bellator Fighting Championships ‘Signs Exclusive TV Agreement with ESPN Deportes’ LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bellator Fighting Championships, a first of its kind Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, officially launched operations today from offices in Los Angeles and Chicago. Three years in development, Bellator has an exclusive television agreement with ESPN Deportes. Bellator season #1 premieres on ESPN Deportes in April, 2009. Bellator (Latin for warrior), marks a step forward in the evolution of professional Mixed Martial Arts with a business model unique in the fight industry, yet followed in every other major sport. At Bellator, a fighter's wins or losses control his future. Bjorn Rebney, Bellator founder & CEO states, "We are implementing a tournament structure to determine champions and #1 challengers so that world-class fighters can control their destiny based on their performance." Bellator events will showcase highly competitive fights between top competitors with each tournament bout winner earning substantially larger purses and moving closer to a championship fight. "Simply put, at Bellator, fighters fight their way to the title," Rebney adds. With a tagline that refers to its fighters as warriors that are on their way to becoming legends, Bellator differentiates itself by making its fighters the focus of the organization. "The fans' connection to Bellator will be created through our fighters. That understanding will drive the promotion, publicity, marketing and advertising of Bellator's fighters, making them the centerpiece of what we do," says Rebney. On each telecast, leading up to tournament bouts, Bellator Fighting Championships will air back-stories on each fighter. "We will use the simple yet powerful sports programming philosophy of combining elite competition with compelling feature pieces that tell the story of who these fighters are, where they're from and why they compete," says Bellator founder & COO Brad Epstein. "MMA fighters have incredibly rich stories to tell, and we will bring these to MMA fans, allowing our audience to identify with who these warriors really are." Bellator's nationally televised events will be highly competitive sports programming in its purest form and will have no connection to "reality television." These events are structured as tournament competitions, crowning champions and top challengers at the end of each season. Bellator's premiere season consists of 12 two-hour events to be broadcast weekly in primetime on Saturday nights. The nationally televised events will feature a combination of tournament and non-tournament special feature bouts. There will be four simultaneous tournaments taking place in season #1 over a three month period: one in each of the Featherweight (145 lb.), Lightweight (155 lb.), Welterweight (170 lb.) and Middleweight (185 lb.) divisions. Eight fighters from around the world will be represented in each division. To win the Bellator Championship, a fighter must win a total of three fights, each consisting of three five-minute rounds over a three month period. At the end of the initial three month, 12-event season, Bellator will have crowned four Bellator Champions and will have awarded each Champion $175,000. Opening round winners receive $25,000, semi-final round winners receive $50,000 and final winners receive $100,000. "Mixed Martial Arts is becoming increasingly popular among Hispanics and we are thrilled to work with Bellator Fighting Championships to showcase these world-class athletes on a national platform," says Lino Garcia, general manager, ESPN Deportes. "The structure of this championship will give fans a unique opportunity to follow their athletes as the tournament progresses."
