thingyan mandats guide

How To Join Thingyan Mandats Thingyan is approaching and now is the time to think how involved you want to be in the celebrations. For those who have yet to experience the water festival, there are several large platforms, similar to Mardi Gras floats in the US, called Mandats. Each include sound equipment, food & beverages and dozens of hoses. Some of the hoses are clearly meant for putting out raging fires but have been reappropriated for just ‘raging’ during the festival. Prices go up everyday closer to April 17th, so you should book a spot on one of the many stages. A few mandats may let those with the Thingyan spirit come on board, the majority will require you to buy a ticket ahead of time, almost always enforced with security personnel and several cameras. Prices vary, connections matter too, but anyone interested in being apart of the madness should definitely get spots reserved! Other stages have yet to announce their plans so stick with MYANMORE.com for Thingyan updates! Every mandat has VIP accommodations that may be worth it if you have a large group of people who want quality alcohol and the option of escaping the fray. Buy tickets with Thingyan Mandatt Tickets (TMT), the main ticket sale company for the big mandats. Contact them at 09789608330. Or contact one of the stage organizers directly, info will be on their Facebook pages.

Immortal Titans Offers Italian Food with a Nightclub BY KLAUS OBERBAUER

WHAT IT IS The outside facade of what could be described as modern Roman architecture tells you a lot about what to expect. Certainly unique in Yangon, houses a type of cuisine that can also not be found anywhere else in the city: Italian-Asian fusion. While the architectural design of the downstairs restaurant and upstairs club will probably not impress everyone, the food will satisfy, both lovers of Eastern and Western food. ATMOSPHERE The setting is upscale with a style that will be most appreciated by people who enjoy gastrobars like Escape, Union Bar or clubs like The Clubhouse. For some guests it will probably be strange to eat in a dark room where you can barely see your food, however if you eat here before a long night of partying the setting gets you in the right mood. RECOMMENDATIONS We started with Risotto Seafood which came with a seaweed risotto, prawns in different sizes and mussels. The taste of the risotto was very well-rounded and the rice was cooked to the perfect consistency for the dish. The seafood was of very high quality, but the heavy cream-based sauce was taking away too much of its natural taste. There was even more additional cream served on the side which made the dish overall too heavy.... We continued with the Beef Tenderloin Tagliata which was definitely the highlight of the evening. The steak is one of the best you can eat in Yangon with Thai-style sauces that were a perfect match for the taste of the meat. With the food we tried a house cocktail and a martini which were standard quality for a Yangon bar and quite heavy on alcohol. FINAL THOUGHTS Immortal Titans is a welcome addition to a part pf town with few high quality restaurant options. Because of the style and atmosphere the target market seems to be mostly Myanmar middle to upper class party people, however, expats who venture past the unconventional facade will be surprised by the high quality of the food. 49 Moe Kaung Road, Yankin Township, Yangon +95 9 421 123 193

An Instant Recommendation! The Lab Pasta Bar BY VICKIE WHAT IT IS The Lab Pasta Bar is surrounded by colorful local shops and situated on a busy little sidewalk with lots of culture and history. The Lab is now open for lunch, dinner and anything in between. Free deliveries are available all throughout Yankin township. ATMOSPHERE It’s a compact restaurant with a mini bar, the colourful walls give a feeling of space. Modren décor, warm lights and an intimate atmosphere, the place provides a comfortable fun spot for couples and families. After dinner, you can head for the tables outside for chilling with drinks and shisha. RECOMMENDATION The choice of dishes range from spaghetti, carbonara, fusilli and raviolis, and prices are from US$7- $12 ...I went for the Seafood Tagliatelli, and loved the properly served al dente, with a delicious toss of tomatoes, cream, pepper flakes, chilies, lemon, prawns, mussels and squids, all tangled up and slicked in fresh pasta sauce. The Ravioli with cheese and sauteed spinach retained a nice bite, finished with a swab-worthy sauce: a bright arugula pesto for the orecchiette and chunks of fresh tomatoes on top. It was the star dish! ... Gazapacho Soup is the perfect dish for the coming Summer season in Yangon. Icy and crunchy, chunks of gardenfresh tomato, prepared to bring a great savory note.... There is a wide variety of drinks, Wines(US $5), Spirits (US $6), Cocoktails(US $5.5), and hot and cold drinks. Freshly-made Juices available as well. FINAL THOUGHTS The Lab is clearly the most spirited space around the area, separated from the others by an old while country fence. The food is superb, the décor is voguish, and the service is fast and friendly. The restaurant is therefore, more sophisticated but relaxed than the upscale dining concept. 202 Yan Shin Street, Yankin Township, Yangon 09 45138 8602 | 11:00am-11:00pm
