National Museum

Guide To The Original Museums Of Yangon BY GWAN HO TONG

A new Myanmar has lead to new museums. Here is a list of some of the first museum in Yangon that have lasted the test of times. These places aren't comprehensive educational institutions, but offer a glimpse into what the country was like before opening up to the rest of the world.  NATIONAL MUSEUM The National Museum in two words, ‘Royalty’ and ‘Buddhism’. The institution is a full account of Myanmar history, but since Myanmar is rich with kings and queens and buddhism, it is understandable that the museum’s focus will be on that. Altogether there are 14 halls with different themes in the 5 storey building. This museum contains historical artifacts about Myanmar but nothing about the recent history, so its far less controversial. One maybe be disappointed visiting the place without knowing this fact. The first hall on the ground floor is based on the relics of Burmese kingdoms, you will see is the scriptures and epitaphs. The first floor is filled with displays of pre-historic Myanmar. It shows what Myanmar is like millions of years back: the kind of people and animal who lived here and the tools they used. There is even a moon rock donated by NASA. The second has to do with culture and the way of life. Displays of the evolution of musical instruments and modes of transportation show the tools of another Myanmar. The third floor can be considered the art floor with paintings from different eras and different kingdoms: Bagan, Innwa, Konebaung, Yadanabon and Taungoo. But the content of the paintings are limited mainly to pagodas and monks. Interestingly, you can see the difference in the way the pagodas are drawn depending on the period. The last floor contains the list of ethnic groups depicted with a row of mannequins wearing the traditional dress of the respective ethnic group.  DRUG ANNIHILATION MUSEUM Don't be surprised when you see former General Than Shwe when you walk into the museum. It is understandable that his picture will be there

since it is the military that mainly tackles the problem of widespread drug in Myanmar. The main purpose of the museum is to raise awareness about the danger of drug usage. The museum is set up into three different floors with each floor conveying a different aspect of drugs in Myanmar. The ground floor is about the history of drugs in Myanmar. By history, I mean the introduction of the drugs to Myanmar, and where it came from. The floor houses various charts showing the routes where the drugs travelled into Myanmar. Besides some of the charts are soundbox when pressed offer narratives about the routes. The narrative comes in dual language but the majority of it is in Burmese. Moreover, the narratives are quite long - overly long I must say. There are also exhibitions showing the battle between the colonial soldiers and the Burmese soldiers. The message of the displays clearly indicates that the colonial power was the source of drug problem in Myanmar. The first floor is about the fight against drugs. Basically, it is about how the military junta tried to eradicate drugs by means of destroying the poppy field or the drugs themselves. The second and the last floor focuses the nasty effects of drugs usage such as drug overdose, HIV and other related diseases are on full display. The floor also contains a case of drugs available in Myanmar such as marijuana, ecstasy and heroin and so on. An obvious case of propaganda in Myanmar. Never focusing on the drugs themselves, instead focusing on the military and their success in drug elimination. Some of the exhibitions are poor maintained, even physically broken. The good side, however, is that not many people come here, so you can have the entire museum for yourself. As bizarre and weird as the museum may seem, it is a place that everyone should visit at least once.  BOGYOKE AUNG SAN MUSEUM This two-storey building is the home of General Aung San before he was assassinated by Galone U Saw, allegedly. The house was built in 1921 but only transformed into a museum in 1962. This house contains person artifacts of General Aung San and also photos of his famous achievements. There are three parts to the museum: the ground floor, first floor and the garden. The ground floor is mainly a photo exhibit of the young Aung San and his activities during his political career. Other items include personal items from Aung San such as lighters and mementos. There is also a car that Aung San used while he was still alive. The first floor is the personal place for Aung San’s family. You can see the bedrooms of Aung San and his wife and even their children. There is also a library where you can see the kind of books that General Aung San read, seems legitimate. In the garden is a pool and a statue of Aung San. The pool is the place where Aung San Lin, one of the sons, had an accident and lost his life. The museum is less educational, geared more towards showing you how Aung San’s family lived. It is a must-visit place for anyone interested in the history and culture of Myanmar.  U THANT’S HOUSE Similar to that of Bogyoke Aung San Museum, U Thant’s house is also a museum of an individual. U Thant, the former Secretary General of the United Nations, is a revered figure in Myanmar. The house was where he lived before he started as the Secretary General. The progression of U Thant’s life as a teacher until his time as an international leader is the theme of the museum. U Thant’s House is more than a museum, it is also an event hosting venue. Befitting only for small events, this would be an interesting spot for Yangon socialites.

Refined Tex-Mex at AJ's BY MARISA WINDIYANTI

WHAT IT IS: AJ’s is a shiny hard-to-miss American Tex-Mex restaurant in an increasingly packed downtown dining scene. The Yangon-born chef who spent the last decades in California and was part of a famous US cooking show guarantees for the authenticity and quality of the cuisine. Our main impression about what both the place and the kitchen has to offer was comfort food in a comfort atmosphere. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is located upstairs from a hotel lobby and is decorated in a classy way with warm lighting which represents the better version of the local trend to modern interior. We have seen other places where the attempt of a contemporary interior has gone quite wrong, so it is a pleasure to see a place that managed to make all the furniture pieces fit together harmoniously. RECOMMENDATIONS: We started out with 2 starters: chili fries and pork ribs. The chili on the fries was well spiced with a distinct taste, yet on a level of spiciness that should be acceptable to all palates. Unfortunately, the chili fries were a bit stale. The pork ribs on the contrary were excellent. The very tender and juicy meat was falling from the bone easily and had a delicious smoky taste that matched perfectly with the sauce, which was freshly prepared this time. We tried mixed tacos, AJ’s Burger and the chicken sandwich as main courses, as well as a chocolate lava melt as dessert... The AJ’s Burger we had was delicious, a must get. The Australian beef had a great smoky taste and was perfectly grilled to medium-rare doneness as requested, which made it juicy and tender. The garnishes were a good match, yet the deep-fried onions didn’t have a very strong flavor, which made them disappear in front of the savory meat. The bun had a rather light consistency, which turned out to be a good combination. FINAL THOUGHTS: AJ’s is a perfect place for everyone looking for comfort food. The style and atmosphere make it suitable for various occasions, be it a casual office lunch, formal business meeting or romantic dinner. The restaurant has enough signature dishes as well as an extensive wine collection and excellent cocktails that make it worthwhile to return. 132, Anawrahta Rd, Yangon

Artisan Lunch At Vestige BY RICHIE CHAN

WHAT IT IS - A casual dining concept in a mid-town accessible retail mall that offers business set meals and a good variety of local, Asian and fusion a la carte dishes at affordable prices. The name “Vestige” according to the owner was first conceptualized to signify the opening up from isolation that is Myanmar. Vestige Café marks the brand’s first foray into the food and beverage business, offering light-hearted traditional Myanmar dishes. The brainchild behind the concept explained that it offers street food and snacks, like those typically found in downtown Chinatown, but in a setting that is ‘super-hygienic’, modern and internationally appealing. ATMOSPHERE - Vestige’s menu is impressive on several points, especially as a design enthusiast: 1) printed on slightly-smaller-than-A3 off-white recycled fiber paper reinforces the Vestige brand and narrative, and the owner’s attention to detail in decoration. 2) the menu, crafted by the owners and chefs themselves, reads affordable prices of hasslefree business set meals and a la carte dishes that included predominantly traditional local fare (tea leaf salads, soups, etc.). Recommendations - 6 business set menus (5,000 Ks), which consists of rice, steamed duck, baby dry fish and kale oyster sides. It was served almost instantly (plus point for busy people) and the portion was reasonable. The baby dry fish were flavorful, as was the kale with a tinge of sweetness in the gravy. Fuss-free and satisfying. I had also gotten to try one of their highlights: Ikan Bakar (oven-baked seabass fish fillet with homemade spicy chilli marination wrapped in banana leaf, 3,000 Ks). What really stood out for me throughout the whole dining experience was the humble traditional beverage Kachin Ale (comes in regular or special, 500-1,000 Ks). Whether it’s the first sip upon arrival at the café, in-between each course, or to round up the meal, each sip was always refreshingly and contrastingly pleasant-sweet – kind of like Korean rice wine. FINAL THOUGHTS: the café’s easy accessibility, environment, affordable menu prices, high standards of hygiene and quality, makes this establishment an ideal venue for authentic traditional Myanmar and quick Asian fixes, there’s something for everyone.
