Hlawga Wildlife Park

Wildlife Sanctuaries and Animal Shelters BY GRACE TUN This weekend (or anytime you feel like it), take time off from the stressful endeavors of life and get in touch with nature. Whether you want to want to get to know some furry friends at a dog shelter or go bird-watching, these places are worth taking a look at.  Hlawga Wildlife Park Just an hours’ drive away from downtown Yangon, the animals here live in a relatively comfortable environment: deer, monkeys and even wild boars can be seen roaming about freely. You can go hiking on jungle trails and will have the opportunity to feed certain animals you encounter. This is one of the few rare natural places close to Yangon, and if you are looking for a day trip, this is the place for you. Location: Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division

 Meinmahla Kyun Wildlife Sanctuary (ASEAN heritage park) Located in the Ayeyarwaddy Delta, this wildlife sanctuary gives you the chance to observe crocodiles, turtles and a variety of birds in their natural habitats, while taking a suspenseful boat-ride through a maze of beautiful mangroves. If you are lucky, you might even get to see the Irawaddy dolphins (usually spotted from November–February), an endangered species with only a population of 50-70 left in Myanmar. This place is perfect for an overnight trip; and you’ll also get to experience village life with the many friendly locals in the area. One of the most well conserved sanctuaries in Yangon, it’s highly recommended for those who want to get a taste of wildlife at its finest. Location: Bokalay Township, Ayeyarwaddy Division

 Phoe Kyar Elephant Camp In honor of World Elephant Day (August 12), why not pay a visit to Phoe Kyar Elephant Camp near Bago? It’s a village that’s home to over 70 elephants, most of whom were born in captivity. Spend time with these majestic animals and participate in feeding activities, as well as watching them get a shower. You could stay overnight in private bungalows and might even get the chance to go on a trekking expedition to find elephants out in the jungle. Location: Near Thargaya Village and the Bago Yoma Mountain Range (Around two hours’ drive west of Taungoo, Bago)

 Moe Yun Gyi Wetland Moe Yun Gyi is a wetland situated in Bago Division about 70 miles north of Yangon, writes Mathis Ayma. This area used to be a reservoir that over time turned into wetland, which today hosts more than 120 species of water birds. It’s a little paradise for all picnickers, naturalists, botanists and bird-watchers, and also for everyone looking for a peaceful place. One of the best activities is the boat cruise that departs from Moeyungyi Resort. The best time to visit Moe Yun Gyi is between November and March. Check out moeyungyiwetlandsresort.com. Location: Pyin Bone Gyi Village in Bago Division

 Yangon Animal Shelter Yangon Animal Shelter founder Terryl Just and her team have pledged to rescue stray dogs that are vulnerable to hunger and disease on the streets of Yangon, writes Anabelle Ayma. This shelter is located about 30 kilometers north of Yangon and is home to about 500 friendly dogs waiting for you to adopt them. Any help is welcome to maintain the shelter: you can meet the animals and help feed them, live a unique experience by becoming a foster parent or a volunteer in the shelter, or simply donate money to this non-profit organization. Visit yangonanimalshelter.com/ contact.

Underground speakeasy Hush Hush opens its submarine door BY MIN YE KYAW Tucked down University Avenue road beside Spice Girls beauty spa is a new and different Yangon nightlife experience. Opened in early July, Hush Hush is set underneath the ground floor dining area, where a secret submarine door leads downstairs to a world of pop hits and fancy drinks. As well as its own lavish signature cocktails, the establishment has an Asian fusion and Western menu. With your first order comes complimentary popcorn.

Deep fried taro Dishes include Thai grilled pork neck salad (4,500 kyats), Greek salad (3,500 kyats), deep fried taro (3,000 kyats), and fried seabass with aromatic vegetable sauce (8,000 kyats). The chocolate lava cake with ice cream and banana (4,000 kyats) comes highly recommended from the bar’s manager and co-owner Swe Zin Aye.

Chocolate lava cake At 3,500 kyats per classic cocktail and 5,000 kyats for a signature concoction the drinks are reasonably priced. One signature drink, the ‘Electronic Brain’ has a potent mix of rum, gin, vodka, tequila, blue curacao and Bailey’s—guaranteed to hit you with one glass. For an even sweeter taste, try ‘My Treasure,’ a mix of vodka, blue berry, and apple juice. Or for something less flashy, there’s a selection of draft beers, mocktails and juices. The Reasonabilists An antidote to the EDM epidemic sweeping across Myanmar is a nascent indie scene, a small bunch of bands penning original tracks for a growing audience. One of the bands, The Reasonabilists, takes their name from a doomsday cult on US sitcom Parks and Recreation. Lead vocalist Paing Lynn Aung, 23, his brother and bass guitarist Kyaw Lynn Aung, 17, and lead guitarist Okka Kyaw, 26, formed last October. Three months later they enrolled local drummer Ye Khine Oo, 27, who plays lively tunes with them at Yangon’s usual suspects: 7th Joint, Basement Bar, French Institute. Counting among his influences The Smiths, Kings of Leon, and The National, Paing writes most of the lyrics, laying them over his guitar riffs. Most of his writing is in English though the band also plays in Burmese. “I can express myself more freely in English,” he says. “I find Burmese a bit constricting.” His song Flowerbed is a good example of their offerings: a post-punk, upbeat track with catchy rhythms and a melancholy undercurrent, supported by the backing vocals of the other Reasonabilists. Okka, who grew up listening to his father’s heavy metal albums, “never imagined” himself to be in a band despite habitually practicing the guitar as a teenager. And then Paing “dragged me in,” he says, adding that he is thoroughly enjoying the experience. For Paing, doing a business diploma was enough for him to realize that music was the way forward. But not the ‘copy-track’ genre that has come to dominate Myanmar’s music industry, where artists modify popular Western songs with Burmese lyrics and pass them off as their own. “They can do what they want,” he says. “If it was me, I would be ashamed.” The local indie scene is a friendly one, with Paing and his band mates often making appearances in the performances of other bands, such as The Peacists and Mooni. “I want people to go to more gigs,” he says. “I want them to support the local bands that are doing original music.” The Reasonabilists’ debut four-song EP Amour will be produced by Big Bag and released under Bipolarbear Records within the coming months. “Grunge and mod rock is still strong here,” adds Paing. “Indie rock hasn’t really taken hold yet, but I think it will. What’s there not to like?”
