Learning can be fun. / Photography by IFB
part time classes in yangon For those that feel the need to exercise their little grey cells occasionally, there are plenty of opportunities to learn something completely new in Yangon. The first class you should consider really is a Myanmar language class, and there are no shortage of teachers offering these services. But other language classes are also available. In fact, all manner of skills can be picked up: dancing, art, music, theatre, even cooking. Ask around Facebook groups or on forums, and you’ll find exactly what you are after.
MYANMAR LANGUAGE SCHOOLS Learning Myanmar language is a great way to immerse yourself into the country and culture. Learning can be fun and enjoyable, but it does require a great deal of motivation and commitment. You could also join a language exchange club to practice your language skills, but you’ll learn the most from chatting with Myanmar friends and colleagues. And of course, taxi drivers are a valuable source of knowledge for everything from football scores to local news. They are a great group of people to practice with, which helps make the traffic jams more bearable!

review
Color Stones - Japanese Fusion Cuisine by Mr. Itchii BY MARTYN BROWN SURF n Turf, a New York roll, eggs sunny side up. Hang on a minute, I must be in the wrong place. I’m supposed to be doing a review of Yangon’s newest Sushi restaurant, not an American diner. Mr. Itchii’s Color Stones, however, is no ordinary Japanese eatery, it’s the city’s first Fusion Sushi restaurant and boy, there is some serious experimentation going on. Australia meets Hawaii meets Italy meets Japan in a mesmerising global culinary fiesta. Mr Itchii, which occupies the top floor of the long-established Color Stones restaurant in Tamwe, is the brainchild of Say Yar Phyo. Growing up in New York and learning his trade across the USA from South Carolina to Hawaii he is now bringing his worldly culinary skills back to his birthplace. “I am looking for something different, traditional Sushi is boring,” he says. “There are so many wonderful tastes around the world – why not make Sushi out of them.” One glance at the menu and the names of his creations read like a roll call of popular international meals. Sushi Italia, a delicious combination of prosciutto, mozzarella, parmesan and tomato with a parsley aioli is La Dolce Vita wrapped up in rice and seaweed. The New York Roll, a personal favourite, packs in a moreish combo of cream cheese, crab stick, mango and salmon sashimi. Fear not, the restaurant does offer all the old favourites too, Sashimi, Teriyaki, Ramen, Japanese Pizza and traditional Sushi among others. The beef steak I tried, another highlight, was juicy, delicious and washed down with a crisp Japanese beer. Mr Itchii packs a considerable punch on your tastebuds it gives you a bang for your bucks. Small signature Sushi dishes start at only Ks3,400 for a Sunnyside Up while a large Surf n Turf, enough for two people to share, costs Ks12,000. Under the one roof there are semi-separate Chinese and Thai dining options and now Fusion Sushi. You can mix it up and eat dishes from all three if you or your fellow diners prefer. It’s a little bit out of the way but Mr Itchii is a little gem that is well worth visiting for a fun night out and a tasty culinary road trip around the world.
