Credit to Yangon Yoga House

Yoga in Yangon As a Southeast Asian nation with a multicultural history, Myanmar is home to many ancient spiritual practices such as yoga. While there are many schooled yogis in Myanmar, it can be difficult to know which are providing classes. Yoga studios come and go as the people do...Big retreats or special classes can be easy to miss.. This is a list of yoga spots in Yangon, far from a complete one, that includes the well-established practices as well as the up and coming ones- not all of them are taught in English but all are welcome.

JENNY YOGA No.237,3-A Anawyatha Road Lanmadaw Township

There are more expats joining but the classes are predominately Burmese students and while there are some English lessons, most are taught in the Burmese language. That said, foreigners are welcome to join and encouraged to call ahead in order to find the most suitable class available. After learning Iyengar Yoga in Beijing, Jenny has led classes for over three years, grooming Myanmar instructors to help her grow her studio. Apart from the physical aspect of yoga, Jenny Yoga (AKA Myanmar Yoga) also provides knowledge about the benefits of yoga and the dos & don’ts for when you do it on your own. There are 3 classes per week of varying skill levels. Customers can choose to do yoga for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year. Prices need to be inquired. Phone: 09421025389, Email: myanmaryoga@gmail.com

EMBASSY OF INDIA 545-547 Merchant St, Kyauktada Township Yangon

FITNESS WHARF Instructor Aldrich Sawbawa holds individual classes (a group of friends or just one person) for those that call and arrange it. His studio is in 9 mile but he can meet you somewhere else if need be. He teaches Bando Yoga, a traditional Myanmar practice that has been referred to as ‘slave yoga’ in the past. It originated from peasants who wanted to maintain their health

before and after manual labour. The focus is less about enlightenment as much as training the body on flexibility, balance and strength. Sawbawa also holds martial arts and other fitness classes for those interested. Classes usually go for USD $60 an hour but another deal can be reached for multiple sessions or people. Call 09 420280430

Grab and read! Innwa Bookstore & Cafe BY VICKIE WHAT IT IS Locally-owned Innwa Bookstore, established in 1993, now has three locations: on Pansodan St. (HQ), Hledan and the newly opened location at the Myanmar Plaza. With increased Western influence, the owners have decided to change the concept to a more youth-friendly café alongside the bookshop. ATMOSPHERE It absolutely had the look of a modern looking café, where I was within arms reach of a massive magazine rack, filled with the latest issues of local and overseas magazines and books, waiting to be picked up and read. There are comfortable seats surrounding coffee tables, with the feel of a typical living room. The rest of the room was covered with shelves holding different genres of Burmese and English books. One corner held a cosy, hideaway, with a carpet for readers to feel even more at home. RECOMMENDATION The café menu has a narrow variety of choices, however, the coffee was remarkable. They use a traditional local brew, which immediately differentiates them from the rest of the cafes available at the plaza. There are about five different types of drinks available, including hot and cold cappucino, latte, hot chocolate, sodas and soft drinks, prices ranging from 500 Ks to 3500 Ks. I was astonished by the wide range of books available in such a tiny space. Burmese books typically sold at 1500 Ks and above. English fictions, adding to my amazement, were only around 10,000 Ks, cheaper than most bookstores, much to the delight of my inner nerd. FINAL THOUGHTS It was refreshing to encounter service that genuinely cares about what you're looking for. This place is a small slice of heaven for bookworms. I almost broke out in applause when I learned they take book orders from overseas for titles not yet available in Myanmar. Address: 206 D, 2nd Floor, Myanmar Plaza. Kabaraye Pagoda Road, Yangon. Tel: 09 5119134 | Opening hours: 10 am to 9 pm.

Sapporo Style

Ramen Bar (Japanese Noodles & Food) BY VICKIE WHAT IT IS A food haven for Japanese noodle lovers, the Ramen Bar is set in a cosy and tidy two-storey space, Unlike other Japanese restaurants, this place focuses on authentic ramen dishes. ATMOSPHERE Although the restaurant occupies a small space, the creative owner knew how to utilize every inch. From Japanese traditional decorative lights and props, to the traditional low eating tables, the restaurant gives a homely vibe, unmatched by any other Japanese eateries. It is almost like eating at your Japanese aunt’s house, if you have a Japanese aunt... I don't. RECOMMENDATION The noodles were toothsome and chewy, with just the right firmness . My partner and I agreed that the Miso Ramen (4000 Ks) and Chashu Ramen (6000 Ks) were the favourite – ‘stunningly good’. the broth was rich and thick, but never too oily, allowing the other vegetables, nori, scallions, and chewy bamboo toppings to shine through. The Pork Gyoza (2500-3000 Ks) was one of better gyozas in I’ve eaten in town – cooked just right, the inside was vicious with flavour and was not too dry. The Ika Ringu or Tempura squid (2500 Ks) was also a favourite. Once inside your mouth, the taste of omelette rivals with the crumbly squid, to create a melt-in-your-mouth level of texture. We also tried the new ‘Cold Noodle’ dish. The noodles were perfectly cold and balanced, with fresh vegetables, bamboo and egg toppings, emphasising the subtler flavours. Perfect during a Yangon afternoon in March. FINAL THOUGHTS Ramen Bar is one of the cleanest and nicest looking restaurants in town. Service is top-notch. As for price, it is cheaper than other Japanese restaurants. Ramen Bar is an instant recommendation. Address: 17 A/ Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Shwe Gone Daing, Bahan Township. Ph: 09788196631, 0973054628 | Opening hours: 11 am to 11 pm
