Taing Yin Thar

Ethnic Food Made To Order By Win Lei Lei Tun

WHAT IT IS Taing Yin Thar is an upscale eatery that aims to promote the flavors of Myanmar by serving ethnic cuisines from all over the country. Here, the quality of their food is paramount. ATMOSPHERE Taing Yin Thar gives off a rustic vibe with its traditional dÊcor. Myanmar paintings adorn the walls while miniature Pathein umbrellas and decorative lacquer bowls are displayed on the shelves. Hanging lanterns give the space a warm glow. RECOMMENDATIONS Definitely order kyet thar san hlaw hin yae (5,000 Ks). This hearty bowl of chicken soup will make your taste buds sing. Roasted rice grains are blended into the soup, making it thicker and giving it a richer flavor. The greens not only give the broth texture, but they also add some healthy fibre to the soup. We had kachin ngar paung (6,000 Kyats), Kachin-style steamed fish with herbs. Mind you, this is not for the faint of heart. When the waiter put the dish on the table, we could barely spot the fish under all the spices! This extra-spicy steamed fish is packed with flavour. It will probably have you reaching for your glass of water after every bite, but still leave you wanting more. Price Range: Appetizers: 3,500 Ks to 12,00 Ks; Main Courses: 2,000 Ks to 11,000 Ks; Desserts: 2,000 Ks to 3,000 Ks FINAL THOUGHTS This is the only place in Yangon where you can enjoy ethnic food from different parts of Myanmar. The food is made to order, so it might take a while to get served, but it’s definitely worth the wait. 5A, Cnr of May Kha Road & Parami Road, Mayangone Township 01-9660792 | Daily from 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Piano Bar & Grill, parima hotel The New Spot Uptown By mitch albaniel WHAT IT IS At Parami Hotel, this is Yangon’s first rooftop bar with a pool - only checked-in guests are allowed to take a dip. Nonetheless, it does provide those north of the city a great and convenient place for after-work sessions, with a stunning panoramic view of Yangon and Kabar Aye Pagoda. ATMOSPHERE The whole vibe of the bar is modern chic with very clever lighting. It has been set up with four main areas: a lively bar, a lounge area, LED cocktail tables in front of the stage and the outdoor pool deck. The little touches they have added definitely makes this place stand out from the rest. RECOMMENDATIONS The Piano Bar & Grill prides themselves in their special cocktails, and topping the list is the 7 Treasures. A mix of, you guessed it, seven different drinks in a giant pint glass which can be shared by two to three people (US$20). Other notable cocktails are the Parami Passion Effect and the classic Mojito (both US$6). The bar also serves food described as 'local Myanmar taste with international standards’. Their bestsellers are the Seta Tar Chout (dried mutton salad, US$4.50) and the Nga Kin (grilled tilapia that was marinated overnight, US$6.50). Most of the items on their food menu are chic antipastos, tapas, and meals intended for sharing. They also have a small desert selection for your sweet tooth. Prices range from US$5 starters to US$25 steaks. FINAL THOUGHTS Though the monsoon season has slowed down the activity on the pool deck area at Piano Bar & Grill is still a must visit. You will be greeted by their enthusiastic staff who will be more than glad to teach you how they make your cocktails. It is a breath of fresh air… literally! 9th floor, Hotel Parami Yangon, No. 2 Parami Road, Mayangone Township (95-1) 658 118 / (+95) 9 977 955 633 | Opening Hours: 5.00 PM to 1.00 AM (Sunday to Thursday) 5.00 PM to 2.00 AM (Fridays and Saturdays) Website: www.pianobarygn.com
