A Foodie’s Guide to Urban 86 BY MIN YE KYAW

Crowds have been flocking to trendy downtown bazaar Urban 86 since it launched in December. Opened from 10am until late from Tuesday to Sunday, the indoor market has enough local and international food stalls to satisfy the fussiest of eaters. But which are really worth your money? TUK TUK has become one of the most popular stalls, with a range of light and authentic Thai salads including papaya, cucumber, long bean, rice noodle, corn and pork. TASTRY faces 48 Street, it’s delicious aroma of spices pulling in passersby. It’s the only Indian food stall in the market, but fortunately they serve quality paneers, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, tangdi kabab, samosas, chapathi and more. Representing Chinese and Taiwanese food are three main players: IMPERIAL GARDEN, franchised from a Cantonese restaurant started by Hong Kong chef Paul Wong that serves good Taiwanese chicken rice, SHWE WANG, a spicy option that serves Mala noodles, chicken wings, and pork meals, and finally, Chinese barbecue I LOVE BBQ, serving reasonably-priced lamb, chicken wings, fish, squid and more. BIG BITE—a well-known brand in Myanmar—has Malaysian noodles, fried rice, spring rolls, chicken satay and French fries. Some of the best Myanmar food includes XIAN'S, a traditional Shan food stall serving potato rice salad with minced pork fermented in rice, Shan noodles, and rice salad. There is also PA PHAUNG, originally a Sanchaung joint which has finally brought its signature grilled fish downtown. Plus a special shout out to the Kachin food stall, SHAR MU which serves ‘spicy chicken gruel’ that tastes better than it sounds, and the Vietnamese stall, where one can slurp pho that would pass the test of any vendor in Ho Chi Minh City.

DESSERT & DRINKS  CHA THAI The biggest Thai tea brand in Thailand already has four branches in Yangon—the latest one here and featuring their signature milk teas, smoothies and juices.  THE LAFES A lovely coffee place decorated with artificial turfs and green color everywhere for a peaceful vibe while you’re drinking coffee. They serve tea, juices, smoothies and other snacks.  THE JUICE BAR Looking for a fresh juice? Wanna try out a combination of fruits? The Juice Bar is the right place for you.  CORN HEYN A great spot for snacking and beer drinking, Corn Heyn is a Japanese place boasting an array of corns (sweet or sour, up to you).  MYANMAR BEER After all that grazing on the stalls, you’ll need to chill with a beer. Urban 86’s only beverage beer, Myanmar Premium is waiting for you in a sitdown area near a stage where musicians often play. You can order with draught glasses or a tower of beer for you and your friends.

review

‘Lakeside venue that does not disappoint’ BY EDWARD SAILLAND After reviewing a spate of pretty lackluster restaurants towards the end of 2017, I was hoping for a positive dining experience in my first assignment of 2018. Signature Fine Dining / The Garden Bistro on the shore of Kandawgyi Lake did not disappoint. Good service, pleasant surroundings and well-cooked, reasonably-priced dishes make this place worth a visit. Both have the same menu and service. I visited on a moderately cool and sunny lunch and opted for a seat on the terrace (The Garden Bistro), charmed by the wooden and rattan furniture and the vintage ceiling and standing fans. The service was good from the outset. The menu features restaurant classics from China, Thailand, Myanmar, and the West, with the latter taking up the largest space. I was surprised to see some French staples including duck confit and chicken cordon bleu alongside the pasta, pizza, burgers. I went for a cross-section of the cuisines on offer: Pasta chili aglio olio, clay pot rice with chicken, lotus root and pork rib soup. I ordered sautéed spinach and green beans as sides because it’s January and I’m feeling portly after the festive season. The pasta itself was cooked very well, on the edge of al dente, with quality olive oil, strong garlic notes and a nice heat from the paprika chili. It was simple but comforting and worth the 9,000 kyats price tag. The two sides (3,000 kyats each) hit the spot—fresh and lightly seasoned. The soup was also a winner. It tasted as though the lotus root was cooked separate from the broth and added later—it had that brilliant crunchy yet chewy texture. The pork tasted good and the soup was enthusiastically, seasoned. The clay pot was the low point of the meal, but was not terrible. I spied a tempting cake cabinet but, because January, I didn’t try any. I believe the Garden Bistro is a slightly overlooked option for us in search of a nice al fresco venue close to downtown. It may also be a good place for afternoon drinking—I tried a dry martini and it wasn’t bad for the 4,500 kyats I paid. Or breakfast, since it opens at 7am. Address: Bahan Road, Yangon. Hours: 7AM to 10:30 PM Phone: 01 546 488

"It is a really nice restaurant. There are monthly specials and daily promotions. Dimsum is very popular. PEPPERONI Pizza is really nice. There are also specilal rooms for business meeting." Aung Min Sein

myanmore awards 2018

STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE The Myanmore Dining and Nightlife Awards of Excellence 2018 are set to be the most exciting yet. The 2018 Myanmore Awards are fast approaching—the deadline for nominations is on January 14 and the awards ceremony will be held on February 3 at Meliá Hotel in Yangon. This year the awards are set to be the most exciting and innovative ever, with five award categories focused specifically on the type of venue, and six new awards presented to individuals, venues or organisations that have especially contributed to the promotion of excellence in the dining and nightlife industry in 2017. Myanmar Beer will again be a major sponsor of the event and will present the award to the best local bar or beer station. They have supported every Myanmore awards ceremony since the first back in 2014. KBZ will be lending their support for the fourth year running and will be presenting the coveted Entrepreneur of the Year award. Previous award winners include Min Lann Seafood restaurant, Father’s Office Bar and Genius Shan Highlands Coffee, who used their 2015 win as a springboard to grow their fledgling company into the celebrated social enterprise that it is today. Meliá will be hosting the awards ceremony and dinner for the first year as venue sponsor. The event is set to be a lavish night of extravagance and celebration. Myanmore are also pleased to welcome back another key sponsor this year—Premium Distribution Co. They too have a long history of supporting the awards. Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd., Marbled Black Co., The Table & Chair Co., Sarmal, and our lifestyle sponsor Training Ground Myanmar are also providing vital support to the awards.

There are several other sponsors that are being brought on board to support the awards ceremony and these will be announced nearer the date. However it is not too late to take advantage of this unique event and register your interest to become a sponsor of the Myanmore Dining and Nightlife Awards of Excellence 2018. There are several exciting advertisement opportunities still available this year including sponsoring the new and innovative individual and team awards. Winners of the Green Award, Wine and Spirits Ambassador of the Year, and Chef of the Year will all be regularly featured in Myanmore print publications and online. The Green Award will be presented to a venue or organisation that has demonstrated a strategic approach to business that prioritizes the importance of sustainable and ethical use of resources. The Wine and Spirit Ambassador of the Year will be presented to someone who is at the top of their game and who demonstrates a creative, knowledgeable, and innovative approach to their work. Chef of the Year will be awarded to someone who exhibits an extraordinary talent that is comparable with the best in the world. Regardless of the style or type of cuisine, their food and menu will be evidence of a chef mastering their art, pushing the boundaries of excellence, and providing a unique “one of a kind experience.” Chef of the Year will be someone the dining and nightlife industry can look up to, attempt to emulate, and learn from. As always the awards ceremony will recognise and congratulate the efforts of members of the dining and nightlife industry, but the emphasis this year will be on cultivating and driving a culture and ethos of excellence going forward. Individual and venue winners will become ‘Ambassadors of Excellence’—their standards and qualities will promoted to inspire others to aim for the same high standards of excellence. Winners will be featured in regular print and online articles and exclusive video ‘catch-ups’ throughout the year. If you are interested in sponsoring the awards or would like to contribute towards the continued growth of excellence by supporting the new and exciting individual awards of excellence then please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team at awards@myanmore.com or call on +95 (0)9 779 003 701, +95 (0)977 6174015.
