the old man & the damsel (1970's) This movie, The Old Man & The Damsel, was based on a Hollywood movie Blue Angel, starring Kurt Juergens. The actress’s name is Khin Than Nu. She won a Miss Union crown around 1960 and then became an actress. She also won many Myanmar film industry’s Academy Awards. She still lives in Yangon. The Myanmar adapted version of this movie also starred Collegian Ne Win, another famous actor. One of the last old cinemas in Yangon is the Waziya Cinema in Bogyoke Aung San Road. This was called was Excelsior Cinema before nationalisation in 1964. The government changed all cinemas with English names into Myanmar names after nationalisation. On the 33rd street side of the cinema there used to be a shop called ABC Hirers. It hired out tables, chairs and cutlery etc. for outdoor functions. Also at a small shop at the front of the cinema was a milk bar called Golly Bar. You could get fresh chilled milk and ice creams there. Many Hitchcock’s famous movies were screened at the Excelsior, like Psycho, North by Northwest as well as other blockbuster Hollywood movies starring Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, William Holden. This building is now being restored and renovated.

Buffet Is The Star

Shiki Tei Japanese Restaurant at PARKROYAL By Robert Berg WHAT IT IS Yangon, while many miles from the culinary adventures and delights of Japan, is starting to offer a much more international feel when it comes to new restaurants. ATMOSPHERE Dinner here brings a broad range of choices for even the heartiest of eaters. Light coloured wood and handmade paper accented with rope and stone keep the windowless space organic and welcoming. Geometrically stacked sake boxes create pleasing patterns and room divisions, all the while keeping the room light and airy. RECOMMENDATIONS The buffet here is the star, and tempting dishes take you on a culinary journey. The centre buffet focuses on salads, noodle dishes, long cooked dishes, and more than a few regional favourites. Pork lovers of bacon wrapped asparagus will definitely find a well executed winner here. The seafood salad is another winner with just the right amount of seasoning. Other offerings include a tasty assortment of salads, chilled tofu, sauteed mushrooms, okonomiyaki, panko fried fish, butter cooked salmon, three kinds of soba noodles, and several long braised dishes. Sashimi here is the real standout. Everything was very fresh with three kinds of local sashimi – sea bass, mackerel and sea bream. Other offerings are Norwegian salmon belly, Japanese saba and Thai-caught tuna. All are quite skillfully prepared with perfectly cut slices of fish. Tuna, salmon and steak tataki are beautifully prepared with subtle flavours. FINAL THOUGHTS All in all the sushi is quite fresh, and the central buffet and nabe mono pleases, but the teppan yaki missed the mark from overcooking. The buffet at US$45 is a deal, and any sushi fan will be satiated. An a la carte menu is available, with pricier selections of wagyu beef available. The wine list is quite expensive, Still it is hard to find sake elsewhere in Yangon, so kampai! – and breakout that business account. There is a set lunch offering for US$12. 33 Alan Pya Phaya Road, Dagon Township. Phone: 01 250 388 Opening Hours: Lunch 11:30am to 2:30pm, Dinner 5:30pm to 10pm

A Perfect Escape for Kids and Adults

Sule Shangri-La Sunday Brunch By Cliff Lonsdale WHAT IT IS From the carved-ice Champagne buckets at the entrance of the restaurant to the mouthwatering array of sushi and sashimi you will pass to get to your table, it is fairly clear that brunch at the Sule Shangri-La Yangon is going to be spectacular. And it is! RECOMMENDATIONS As well as the magnificent array of fresh seafood, there is a banquet of cured meats on the charcuterie stall including rich dried biltong and melt in the mouth smoked beef. The carvery provides three different cuts, on this visit it was roast duck, tender pork belly with a lovely crispy skin and an exquisitely tasty Tandoori-lamb, though the selection changes each week. If that is not enough for you then there is a make-you-own pasta counter, tapas selection and an international foods buffet that are worth planning your portion sizes around. Situated pride of place in the centre of the room, the desserts section is breathtaking. Although the bright orange white-chocolate fondue fountain provided the perfect ‘Willy Wonka’ finishing touch to the counter, it actually tasted pretty dreadful. Never mind you can’t win them all. ATMOSPHERE Unlike some other Sunday offerings the ambience here is one of peace and calm. The reason for this is perhaps because the children of the diners have their own Sunday Brunch in the adjacent room. Under the watchful eye of child-minders it was packed with kids eating child-friendly finger foods, and playing with balloons, watching cartoons and having all manner of fun. FINAL THOUGHTS Whilst the kids got on with enjoying themselves, the adults can do the same. With free flow wine (sparkling, red and white), beer and non-alcoholic drinks the adults seem to be doing OK without their child chaperones. Price: US$36 per head. 223 Sule Pagoda Road. For reservations call 01242828 Extension 6401, 6402 email: restaurantreservations.ssyn@shangri-la.com.

bREAKFAST IN BURMA Best Toeshay! By Robert Berg

Toeshay – Dosa with potato curry, tomato/mango chutney & daal Breakfast is one of the best times to sample the local flavours, and experience the start of the day for many people. Most any street sidewalk will be filled with a wide assortment of offerings, ranging from the ubiquitous mohinga, to assorted fried delights & Indian breads. One of my favourites is from the south of the Indian continent. Toeshay is a thin crispy flat bread made from a combination of rice flours, water & a bit of baking soda, and is comCredit: Robert Berg mon all over Yangon. It is cooked over an open-fire pit on a wide cast iron plate called a debya, which works so well it makes one wonder about our endless need for non-stick & elaborate cooking surfaces. One of the best toeshay stands is on the north-east corner of 47th Street & Anawratha Road. This particular sidewalk vender produces one of the best toeshay we have had anywhere in Burma. Family-run and delivering a constant stream of both toeshay and poori to sit-down & takeaway diners alike, Malar, the family patriarch, has been making breakfast on this corner since 1988, when she first set up to help feed the students who were protesting government reforms. It is a family enterprise, with daughters, Sandar and Aye Aye Cho, supporting her. Toeshay can be as simple as the crisp bread itself, served with a delicious potato curry, redolent of fresh curry leaves, a delightful mango & tomato chutney and daal dipping sauce. It can also be made a bit heartier by ordering che’ oo ne toeshay, served with a chicken egg spread over the still-setting batter. It can also satisfy the sweet tooth by ordering tha ja ne toeshay (sprinkled with sugar). All are served with the same wonderfully flavourful accompaniments. Everyone who eats here walks away with a knowing smile. Malar’s breakfast will cost you less than a 1000 Ks, but get there before 9am as by then, all may be happily consumed.
