Local djs guide
DJ Kendrick
local dJS Guide Clubs in Yangon are quick to bring in international DJs, usually from Bangkok or Singapore, but the talent pool here is worth keeping an eye on. The electronic music scene in Myanmar is small and in the middle of finding an identity. Many of the DJs from this list got to play at Thingyan Music Festival stage or at the Together Festival, a concert held on 7th May. You can see these folks play at Brave Bar, Pioneer, DJs, the new FUSE place and the other local clubs. Follow their Facebook pages if you want to check out their schedule.
DJ KENDRICK 1st Runner Up at Myanmar DJs Championship, DJ Kendrick has slowly moved up in Myanmar’s EDM scene. After playing electro and progressive house for a year at Brave Bar, he is now a resident DJ at FUSE, the newly opened club. DJ Kendrick has been performing since he was seventeen and is a hard act to book ever since he headlined at the Guardian’s Water Festival Stage years ago. He DJed at Thingyan Music Festival for this year’s celebration. Most recently, he was a featured DJ at the Together Festival this past Saturday. He's a growing name in modern EDM who mixes with classic rock tracks.
DJ BOBY FUNK DJ Boby Funk is a veteran turntablist who has been on the scene since 2008. One of his recent achievements was winning the 2016 Myanmar DJ Championship. Currently, he resides in Singapore but he comes back to Myanmar to play a gig every now and then. He mashes up HipHop/R&B, EDM, House and sometimes even reggae or jazz. His several years of experience have led Boby Funk to also work as an instructor in Singapore as well as a pillar of nightlife.
DJ DOUBLE U DJ Wine (goes with the alias, Double U) starts his DJ career in the early 2000s with underground dance music. He is notable for making EDM popular in Myanmar with his “sickest” track such as Shwe and Thit Sar. As
one of his notable achievements, he made the background music for the popular Burmese Movie, “Angel of Eden”. He was also part of the lineup for the Together Festival.
TERROR BASS Pump-up music that is fitting for cardio or a Vin Diesel movie. They are an intense act that combines dubstep and hard trap to engineer a sound that is popular with ravers and local hip-hop groups. People who frequent the big Yangon clubs have probably heard their remix of BTFWD.
DJ ICEZ With more than a decade of experience under his belt, DJ Icez is one of the most prominent DJ in Yangon. He has thrived in the the growing music scene, playing a range of genres from Hip-Hop, Trap, Progressive House, Electro and even 80s or 90s depending on the demand of the audience. He is an eclectic artist who has succeeded from his broad mainstream appeal where he resonates amongst different age groups and music tastes. DJ Icez headlined for the Thingyan Music Festival stage, possibly playing in front of the largest of crowd of the whole festival. He is currently working as the head instructor at the Juzie Muzic Centre, an established DJ school.
M INVADERS Another TMF performance group, with diversity as their identity. M Invaders is a group of 4 DJs who combined forces to make one of the biggest acts in Myanmar. They are DJ Lu Lu, DJ Mickey, DJ Naung Naung and DJ Dynamite. So far, they have released 4 CDs with the latest one released this past March, titled M Invaders Vol. 4. Each DJ bring a different style and genre preference M Invaders to the group, diversity is their identity. DJ Lu Lu focuses on Trap and Twerk music, DJ Mickey’s genre is bounce, DJ Naung Naung’s suit is mash-up and big room and DJ Dynamite’s specialty is EDM.
RIGHT D (BLACK SHEEP) Right D is a DJ and music producer who works with all music that is electronic. He has already produced two albums with other local DJs under the record label, Black Sheep. He has an EDM version of ‘Thingyan Moe’ for those interested in a 'bouncy' cover of a Burmese classic. You can find him at work at Immortal Titan’s Phantom Lounge.
DJ JAY DJ Jay (Dhamma Phunk), also known as Illskool, is a veteran DJ who is from Pyin Oo Lwin. He was exposed to EDM as a young child and has made a career in developing Myanmar electronic music. He works within EDM, Hip Hop, R&B, Dubstep, Trap, Drum n Bass to even Psychedelic all from different eras. He has a classic sound that is popular with those who grew up with house music in the early 2000s. He is definitely in the Myanmar DJ Hall of Fame if one exists. He has a lot of tracks on Youtube if you feel like giving it a whirl.

MYANMORE Review of Gringos Chilangos BY CHARLIE TURNER WHAT IT IS - Gringos Chilangos translates to 'White People, People From Mexico City' in an informal vernacular. The name is fitting since it is owned by a diverse group of friends which include a British manager and a chef from Mexico City. The concept in the kitchen is to recreate the street food from Mexico City using locally sourced meat & vegetables to ensure freshness and affordable prices. ATMOSPHERE - The big dark oak-like door on Bo Aung Kyaw Street set the tone for the two-storied, hacienda styled interior. The central location of GC make it a lunch favourite for professionals in the area while their new cocktails menu and Happy Hour deal should draw a similar crowd for dinner. RECOMMENDATIONS - The Michelada Mango (3000 Ks) is highly recommended if you want a drink that smacks you awake with spice and citrus rather than the bite from booze. You can sample these drinks, as well as new cocktails, for their Happy Hour launch party on Saturday, 28th May - all drinks half off. The tacos are their bread & butter (not sure about the Mexican equivalent of this idiom) and your table should get at least one order to share. The Carnitas tacos are said to be their flagship, pulled pork with onions and cilantro (6000 Ks), but I personally liked the Tinga de Pollo (5000 Ks) which was topped with a tomato and onion marmalade that kept the meat moist and a balanced flavour. FINAL THOUGHTS - No one can give me a good answer as to why Mexican has taken off in Yangon. But with 2000 Ks tacos, an innovative kitchen and a trendy interior I could see Gringos Chilangos functioning in most world cities. They have plans to shake up their menu but GC's willingness to make their own tortillas and salsas all with local ingredients indicate they plan on keeping prices low and their food fresh. Check out their Happy Hour: 2 for 1 drink deals at Mon-Fri 5:30pm-7:00pm. Starts on 30th May. 257 Bo Aung Kyaw Street Township, Yangon. Ph: 01 245 631

Bring The Cavalry To The Lab BY ELIAS DUBOSE
WHAT IT IS - The Lab provides an upbeat environment for the social and well to do crowd in Yangon. The dimly lit restaurant plays steady house music that’s unobtrusive to the customer experience, which skews toward the intimate variety. The menus then inform the customers that this bar is a cut above the casual dive that can be found just around the corner. ATMOSPHERE - If you are looking to share an intimate evening with friends or coworkers, sharing drinks and plates alike, The Lab provides an excellent blend of upscale, yet easygoing dining that won’t break the bank as long as you bring the tribe. RECOMMENDATIONS - I started the night with the hummus, gambas al ajillo, and the new Chicken croquetas. As is the nature with tapas, most offerings here are sliced and served in three’s. Indeed, the food here is promoted, albeit subtly, to be shared amongst the table. As alternatives to the wine, their spirited offerings range from 6,500 to 7,500 Ks. Though wine can start as low as 35,000 Ks per bottle, their selection can climb to as high as 99,000 for wine and 159,000 Ks for champagne.... As a second wave, I then tried the stuffed chicken breast and the chicken burritos. The meat in the stuffed breasts were a delicious delivery system for the feta cheese mix packed inside, making it a perfect companion to my aromatic drinks. The burritos fulfilled my primal need for alcohols devilish cohort, cheddar cheese, that left me wanting more. FINAL THOUGHTS - The Lab offers great atmosphere and tip top service for groups looking for fairly priced food and an assortment of options to pair with them. The wine menu is engineered toward customers to enjoy whole bottles rather than a glass or two. If you want to take advantage of their tremendous backlog, it is recommended to bring your friends to justify the entry fee. Additionally, they have specials on their food and/or drinks just about everyday, so it’s best to plan out your trip beforehand to maximize your meal. 70a Shwegondaing Rd, Yangon
