NEW ILLUSTRATED MAP CREATED FOR YANGON BY ANNE POULTER

Myanmore media house in Yangon have teamed up with Visa Card to produce a pocket-sized illustrated Yangon map that includes a suggested 24 hour itinerary in the city. The map has been designed to make it super easy for visitors to enjoy their stay in Yangon by providing local tips and the essential information about Yangon’s heritage buildings. The contents of the map have been produced in cooperation with Singaporean graphic designer Richie Chan and British illustrator/cartoonist Ben Hopkins. Comprising over 60 hand drawn illustrations depicting the principal places of interesting, iconic buildings and fun activities, Ben Hopkins explains, “The intention was for the map to serve as an accurate visual representation of the Yangon’s attractions and the city’s character that are central to the visitor experience. To do so, we created a guided tour using made-up characters representing key interests such as shopping, photography, sports and adventure, gastronomy, heritage, arts & culture.” Visitors can follow in the footsteps of renowned figures of bygone years through the city’s historic attractions, find unique dishes in friendly restaurants, visit unforgettable landmarks for memorable photographs, engage in fun activities and delve into the Yagonite’s favourite shopping areas.

Some might argue the map represents an overly sanitized version of Yangon, a point not lost on Ben, “I suggested we include a few hole in the wall restaurants and cheap whisky shacks, but Visa were havin’ none of it. I’m already planning an alternative version, if anyone’s up for sponsoring us”. That aside, the tips on how to spend 24 hours in Yangon is packed with fun information for Yangon’s tourists beginning with breakfast recommendations, moving through landmark attractions, activities for all ages, key areas in Yangon and highlight a diverse range of restaurant recommendations for all budgets. Practical information is also provided, such as a list of travel tips on money matters, finding accommodation, travelling light, health and hygiene, getting around town and conversing in basic polite phrases. “We’re excited about how it turned out and are confident it will be a useful resource for Yangon’s visitors,” says Myanmore’s artistic director Richie Chan. Embassies are clearly marked with national flags so visitors can spend less time looking up addresses and more time enjoying their holiday. Visa commented, “We are delighted to release this unique illustrated map of Yangon as part of our service to ensure visitors enjoy the best experiences Yangon has to offer. More than just a map, this is a unique creative approach to visiting Yangon gives a lively and vibrant depiction of the city and at the same time celebrates its great heritage.” ‘Yangon Map’ has been released just as the monsoon season ends and the high tourism season begins. Packed with information for dry season travellers, the complimentary map was custom-made for Visa Card by Yangon-based media company Myanmore and is available from hotels, restaurants, bars and shops around Yangon.

MANPUKU BUFFET A JAPANESE BUFFET that WON’T BREAK THE BANK BY MARC SPINNEKER

WHAT IT IS - With branches in Tokyo, Los Angeles and now Yangon,

Manpuku Buffet is a buzzing Japanese barbecue that is equally popular among locals and expats. In fact, if you come during prime time from Fridays to Sundays you may have to spend some time at their waiting area for a table. However, fret not. What you are about to experience is well worth your time. This Japanese chain has everything you need for a fantastic evening (starts at 3pm). Enjoy fresh and delicious meat, sea food, and side dishes in ample supply that you can grill to your own level of perfection. Highlight: all this for 12,800 kyats flat plus drinks.

ATMOSPHERE - Hosting up to 200 people, the one-room diner is dominated by a bustling activity with waiters and guests alike walking around. Still, you won’t feel like the place is cramped or as if your neighbor could unintentionally become part of your conversation as the tables have a good distance from one another. The attentive staff spots your every need, cleaning your table every so often, offering drinks, and exchanging the grate as soon as it becomes necessary. Most importantly, the seating is wonderfully cozy—a rarity in a city where most locations don’t seem to bother much about comfort. RECOMMENDATION - Choose from 18 varieties of meat and have it freshly marinated with one of four different sauces, each as excellent as the other. Special recommendation goes to the beef tongue, the pork belly and the chicken hearts. If you don’t feel like having meat this time, you may find joy in the sea food bar with mussels, squid, prawns and other delicacies, the daily changing soup offer, or the extensive salad and fruit bar. All ingredients are strictly sourced locally, giving them a wonderfully fresh taste. Once you have your selection together and start grilling, indulge in a gratifying evening of superb food, especially the assortments of meat. PRICE - 12,800 kyats for 1.5 hours as much as you can eat. Afterwards every 10 minutes, you’ll be charged 1,000 kyats. Beer, whiskey, wine, cocktails and fruit drinks (juice, smoothies, etc.) come in many variations.
