downtown indian sweet shops BY YAMUNA MARIADOS If you need to feed the sugar fanatic in you, it would be a good idea to take a small adventure to downtown Yangon. Your sweet tooth will crave the wonderful Indian sweet that is Laddu. Laddu is a ball shaped sweet made from semolina flour, sugar and cooked in loads of ghee. There are also many other varieties of Indian sweets. The ones most commonly consumed are Jangiri, Chum-chum, Burfi, Halwa, and Mysore pak. Indians generally refer to all sweets as Mithai. The sweets have various origins in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Mogok Butter House
Mogok Butter House is a little shop located next to the Sri Kali Temple along Anawrahta Street. This shop has a small selection of Mithai. What they lack in variety, they make up for in quality. I was attended to by a friendly Nepali shop assistant, who seemed so happy with life that it almost made me wonder if there was something in their Mithai which made everything seem a whole lot better. After my first bite of the Milk Burfi, I was pleased with myself too. The shop also has freshly churned butter available, if you fancy something different from the regular store-bought ones. Price range: 200 Ks - 300 Ks. ? No.300, Room No.2 Anawrahta Street, Pabedan Township t 09 310 62 060 / 01 374 635 P 6.00 AM -7.00 PM
Maharaja Indian Sweets
Maharaja Indian Sweets is situated along the bustling Anawrahta Road, if you don’t know what you are looking for, you might just miss this shop.
Apart from the commonly consumed Mithai, they also have a good selection of Murruku (fried rice flour titbits). It is commendable that they take pride in the way their Mithai is packaged. If you buy three pieces or more, the shop assistants will gladly pack it for you in a nice little box. Price range: 200 Ks - 500 Ks. ? No.88 Anawrahta Road, Between Seikkan That Street &39th Street, Kyauktada Township t 09 250 649 425 / 09 250 649 426 P 9.00 AM - 9.00 PM
Mithisu Indian Sweet
Mithisu Indian Sweet is a hive of activity. When we visited the shop, the assistants were very busy packing Mithai into boxes to fill out a large order. The shop has at least 4-5 people attending, therefore service is very swift. There is an array of delicacies to choose from, such as Mithai, baked goods (bread, cake, pudding) and Murukku. All the Mithais are labelled in English and Burmese, so you can take this chance to learn some Burmese as you chomp away on Jangiri. My personal favourite is their Milk Burfi, you’ll relish every bite. Price range: 200 Ks - 400 Ks. ? No.472 Corner of Bo Soon Pat Street & Mahabandoola Road, Pabedan Township t 01 252 722 P 8.00 AM - 10.30PM
Liberty Indian Sweets & Snacks
This seems to be a well-known Indian sweet shop among the locals. Liberty Sweets also has another outlet located along 33rd Street. The assistants are not very chatty, but the Mithai we ate spoke for itself. The Jangiri was nice and firm and not soggy from soaking in sugar syrup. If you are travelling along Anawrahta Street, you cannot miss the bright red signboard, calling out to you to come take a bite. Price range 100 KS - 500 Ks. ? No.313 Corner of Anawrahta Street & Kon Zay Dan Street, Pabedan Township t 01 386 590 P 9.00AM - 9.00PM
Royal Sweet
Royal Sweet by far has the largest variety of Mithai available. Laddus that come in three different sizes, Coconut Burfi in different flavours (chocolate, strawberry, milk), Jangiri, Mysore Pak, Rasgulla and Gulab Jamun. Their Laddus are a definite must try. For those who want to just get a taste of what’s on offer, the smallest Laddu comes in the size of a lollipop at 100 Ks, pop it to get a feel of the Laddu magic. The shop assistants were as sweet as their Mithai, can speak in English and are eager to serve. This is the only Indian sweet stall that was labelled as Halal. Royal Sweet is fit for Kings! Price range: 100 Ks - 1000 Ks. ? No.507/519 Mahabandoola Road, Corner of Shwebontha Street, Pabedan Township t 01 387 285 / 09 448 004 282 P 7.30AM -8.30PM
Vijay Sweets
Vijay Sweets is a small shop tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. It is managed by the man behind the name, Mr Vijay. He speaks English very well. He prepares each of the Mithai at home before they are brought over to the shop. Vijay Sweets carries the largest Laddus I’ve ever seen, one bite and you get hooked. Also try the warm delicious Samosa on offer, they are the perfect end to a cold rainy day. Price range: 200Ks - 700 Ks. ? No.19 29th Streer (Lower Block), Pabedan Township P 8.30 AM - 8.30 PM

KeCo Hot Pot By San Htar Htike WHAT IS IT What do you think is the most suitable food for a rainY day? Have you ever imagined experiencing the atmosphere of formal Chinese and THE taste of hot-pot for a rainy-day lunch? This KeCo Hot Pot is situated in the downtown area and it was the owner’s creative idea to provide a place for dating, parties and social meetings. ATMOSPHERE The service here is smiling and friendly, with a backdrop of Chinese style decorations. The red, black and white wallpapers try to make the restaurant feel atmospheric. It would feel a lot more romantic with the use of natural light rather than super bright LED bulbs. Downstairs is alive with the movements of downtown Yangon. Bar style self-portion pots are available so as to make it easy and casual for the diner. You are able to view the kitchen as well, giving a chance for the restaurant to show off its use of fresh meat and vegetables. Upstairs, the feel is strongly romantic, with adjustable tables and quiet ambience. RECOMMENDED Two tastes are made available, curried spicy and ordinary soup, with two kinds of menu, set choice and plate-by-plate. Chicken, USA beef, pork, pork belly, goat, fish and seafood are all available at reasonable prices. The Seafood Set with ordinary soup is the perfect accompaniment and it made my day on this visit. The cost is only 12,500 Ks, with free orange juice and dessert, making it the best value hot-pot restaurant in town. The set menu comes with a variety of vegetables. to be totally sure of the excellent smell and the taste of the food, we also ordered from the plate-by-plate option. Prices range from 8,500 Ks to 12,500 Ks FINAL THOUGHTS The service was perfect, as was the food. The restaurant can easily be found at the corner of 44th street and the Merchant Road. They are now planning to expand the menu, and one should definitely go there while in Yangon. It’s the best Chinese-style Hot Pot restaurant in town. No.438, Corner of 44th Street and Merchant Road, Kyauktada Township, Yangon. 09-262 611 112, 09-262 611 113

L’Alchimiste
Creativity, passion and local produce BY NIKITA BLACK WHAT IT IS L’Alchimiste is a French Fine Dining restaurant set in a colonial villa by Inya Lake. All ingredients are sourced locally and the lunch menu (3 dishes - 18$) changes almost every day according to goods available at that point of time. ATMOSPHERE It is an intimate place, quite simple and romantic, with few tables and attentive service. This weekend was exceptionally sunny for rainy season so we asked to be seated outside and enjoyed the sights of squirrels playing and dragonflies fliting around the garden as well as the lake view. RECOMMENDATION The menu boasts a selection of soups, fish, meats and salads to satisfy the varying appetites of the guests. To give us an idea of the options, the French Chef dished out a real gastronomic menu: 12 dishes were served, so for the full review, please check the website! The definite highlight of the meal was a small yet outstanding scallop and quinoa risotto, creamy with old Parmesan cheese. Piercing the skin of the braised scallop opened the door to juicy and tender flesh which melted away in the month. The quinoa added some crunchiness to the dish while the cream gave it a hearty feel. (US$19) The Nga Myin (butterfish) was hidden away in a shellfish bouillon while the Seabass was arranged with tangy flavours of ginger, citronella and celery. (22$) Meat-wise, the Chef had prepared a 5 hour roasted lamb foreshank lacquered with thyme honey (US$26) and a Pork Filet Medallion (US$14). FINAL THOUGHTS The fish dishes were refined and the meats were copious but L’Alchimiste definitaly impressed us most with its seafoods. Most dishes hid a game of textures and structures which will delight refined food lovers. We liked that the Chef only works with local meats which require creativity and risk taking to successfully dish out. No.5, U Tun Nyein Street (North-east bank of Inya Lake) Open from 11 am to 11pm, everyday.
