Sprouts’ second cafe Five years ago an expat couple decided the best way to remedy a lack of healthy options in Yangon was to convert their apartment on Yaw Min Gyi Street into a salad bar. Since then, Sprouts has become one of the city’s most reliable eateries for clean and nutritious fare. Its newly opened second major branch on the ground floor of Sanchaung’s Pyay Garden Office Tower promises to continue that tradition, with a range of innovate new additions to the menu. Served in its laidback coffee-shop environment are classic and creative salads, breakfast omelets and toasts, rice bowls, smoothies and more. The second branch will also act as a delivery hub, ensuring takeaway dishes reach their destinations quicker. As part of its eco-friendly ethos, Sprouts provides compostable forks and spoons as well as brown paper bags in its deliveries, while its straws are compostable and available on request only. Spread throughout its offerings are ingredients sourced from reputable local outfits, such as Shwe Taung Nyo Gyi farm’s free-range eggs, Kokoya organic farm’s vegetables, and Yangon Bakehouse bread. The bread can be enjoyed in a selection of toasts (4,000-5,500 kyats) including feta toast with spinach and two poached eggs or the more indulgent peanut butter spread on a thick slice with honey and chocolate shavings, best washed down with Sprouts’ banana smoothie. Stand outs include the filling brown or white rice bowls, especially the spicy sesame chicken (5,500 kyats) heaped with broccoli, peanuts, capsicum, cucumber and chili with a side of ginger dressing. Or for the most popular dishes, try the Holy Guacamole Salad, Pumpkin Patch, with feta, chickpeas, roasted veggie, and an addictive honey mustard dressing, and the Superfood Salad which of course includes quinoa and chia seeds. Veggie, vegan and gluten free choices are abundant, and Sprouts cleverly stems its use of sugar by replacing it with dates. Try the chocolate nut truffles and coco energy bites for the flavorful result. These treats are available by the box along with jars of basil, beetroot and hummus pestos Plus fans of the cafe will be pleased to know that the ‘build-a-salad’ bar— the original concept for the eatery—is included in its new branch. Address: Pyay Garden Office Tower, 346-354, Pyay Road, Sanchaung Township Hours: 8am-7pm Contact: 09 955563298 / sproutsmyanmar@gmail.com

Japanese comfort food galore at Gohanya New Japanese restaurant Gohanya is enticing students and other Yangonites with its traditional donburi rice bowls. Set on the third floor of Kaplan Myanmar University College in Kamayut Township, the airy restaurant has a modern interior of wooden furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing the light to spill in. Japanese-themed graffiti made by local artists decorates the place, and there are plans to bring everything together with a faux-sakura tree in the center. Underneath some art of Mount Fuji, Myanmore was invited to sample three donburi bowls, each served with miso soup. The first was succulent chunks of sweet and sour chicken (4,800 kyats) with peppers and eggplant and dressed in sweet vinegar sauce. Pan-seared Norwegian salmon with cabbage salad and teriyaki sauce (6,200 kyats) and gyudon—thinly sliced US-imported beef sautéed with onions and beef sauce—were the other two. The bowls were heaped with fresh ingredients; simple, healthy fare that would fuel any diner through the day. Singaporean head chef Gabriel Tan has insisted on making all the sauces in house using a dashi base and seasoning with additions such as Japanese soy sauce, mirin, saki, and ginger. A range of fruity teas including passion fruit and peachy oolong are available for 2,500 kyats, along with coffee and soft drinks. Small plates (2,600-4,500 kyats) such as agedashi tofu, truffle fries and tempura are served on attractive wooden boards in the clean environment. Address: A/6 Waggi Yeikthar Road, Kamayut Kaplan Myanmar, University College Building, Level-3 Hours: 11am-9.30pm, closed on Sundays Contact: 09799331636
