Sunday Brunch

An ideal way to start a Sunday is to wake up late — gather some friends together — then head off to a wonderful brunch. There are many options for brunches in Yangon to suit your appetite, whether it be French-inspired cuisine, a live jazz band accompaniment, a champagne-infused light meal, or simply one that has flavours from around the world.

Cafe Sule @ Sule Shangri-la – Sunday Brunch Buffet

The buffet held by Sule Shangri-La provides many cuisines and treats. There is something for everyone with flavours from Japan, India, China, Burmese, Western and many fusion varieties. Pancakes are made fresh, on demand! They have now arranged a Kid's corner. Expect some added noise. ? 223 Sule Pagoda Road, Pabedan Township t 01 242828 P 12pm to 3pm Cost: US$36

50TH Street Cafe, Restaurant & Bar

The Brunch at 50th isn't a buffet, order à la carte. The best choice definitely is the traditional Egg+bacon+toast+sausage+tomato+mushroom+hash brown+baked beans combo. ? 9/13 50th Street, Botahtaung Township t 01 397060 P 11am to 2:30pm Cost: $US7.50 - US$12

Acacia Tea Salon

Every Saturday and Sunday, Acacia Tea Salon brings out their à la carte brunch menu. Composed essentially like an American breakfast with pancakes, fresh juices and hot drinks. It also features omelets, mini sandwiches and pastries. Don't forget to visit their bakery while you're there. ? 52 Saya San Road, Yankin Township t 01 554739 P 9am to 3pm

Agnes @ Kandawgyi Palace Hotel

Agnes has now moved temporarily to the Thiri Cafe location while renovations are being done to its former beautiful lakeside site. Agnes offers a magnificent spread of French-inspired food every Sunday. A real highlight of Yangon’s culinary scene, it’s easy to see why. Its great selection of meats, salads, grilled meats and desserts sets it apart from the other brunches around. ? Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, Kan Yeik Thar Road, Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township, Yangon t 01 249255-9, 01394837-9 P 11:00 to 14:30, 18:30 to 22:30 (evening BBQ) Cost: US$35 includes sparkling, red, and white wine on request

Orchid Restaurant @ Inya Lake Hotel

The Orchid Restaurant at Inya Lake Hotel hosts a good spread of food every Sunday. The Free Flow includes red/white/sparkling wines, beer and juices. The brunch experience is topped off with a great jazz band. ? 37 Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Yankin Township t 01 662866 P 11:30am to 2:30pm Cost: US$35 + free flow drinks (US$17.50 for kids)

The Square Restaurant @ Novotel Yangon Max

This is Yangon's biggest and most crowded brunch. Their choices are impressive. You will only enjoy this brunch if you don't mind eating in a loud place. Ideal for parents with kids who need to run around, and parents who need to let go. ? No 459 Pyay Road, Kamaryut Township P 12pm to 3pm Cost: US$35 (plus freeflow sparkling and wine)

Union Bar & Grill

Finally a Sunday Roast! It isn't a brunch but it is a good Sunday treat. All the classics are there, à la carte. All roasts come with roasted potatoes, root vegetable mash, sautéed greens and homemade gravy! The kids have an area to play while happy parents enjoy their traditional English Roast. ? 42 Strand Road, Botahtaung Township t 09 420101854 P 12pm to 9pm Cost: US$16 (Roast Sirloin Aged Beef, Yorkshire Pudding)

Shopping Mall Buzz Kuay Teaw Thai By Amy Li

WHAT IT IS Kuay Teaw is a Thai restaurant opened by Tummour, which serves mainly Kuay Teaw, a traditional Thai noodles dish, usually served in or with different broths and meats. It can be found served many street vendors in Thailand. ATMOSPHERE Kuay Teaw is located right in the middle of Secret Garden at the Junction Square Mall. The restaurant has short fence-like structures around it, which makes it a very public dining area. With simple furniture and decorations inside, diners also have a view of the vibrant interior decorations of the Secret Garden that is around them. Expect the usual shopping mall buzz as you enjoy your noodles. RECOMMENDATIONS The restaurant offers a variety of different Kuay Teaw, all with different flavours and meats, as well as chicken rice, other traditional Thai dishes, appetisers, and drinks. Recommended is definitely the Dry Kuay Teaw with Pork Tummour Style (3,300 Ks). This is almost like a noodle salad, with complexities of different Thai seasonings in every bite. A tasty broth is also served on the side. Another tasty dish is the classic Kuay Teaw with Chicken Soup (3,300 Ks), with its tender chicken and flavour-packed broth. All dishes can be adjusted to customers’ taste with the condiments served on every table. Price Range: Foods, 2,500-5,000 Ks. Drinks, 5002000 Ks. FINAL THOUGHTS If you’re looking for a private, quiet place to dine, Kuay Teaw is definitely not the right place to go. The noises and buzz make it a fun place to have a quick delicious snack or meal with friends. The noodles taste quite authentic, and eating there feels like going to a cleaner, more pleasant version of the street vendors at Thailand. Bonus – it’s very affordable! No. Six-613, Level 6 (Secret Garden), Junction Square, Pyay Road, Yangon. Phone: 09-797979607 Opening Hours: 10:30am - 8:30pm

Dim Sum Me!

Novotel yangon max - Dim Sum Saturday Brunch By Manny Maung My fondest memories of dim sum are relegated to Saturday brunches with my family in Sydney. We would gather every other week at our favourite dim sum restaurant downtown for a sibling ritual: to collectively gather our wits after a big outing the previous night while working through mountains of dim sum to recover.. Soothing black tea would restore some of our senses but mostly it was the essential ingredient to help digest as we gorged on delicious, flavour packed portents of dim sum. It was with pleasure that I learned one of the more recent hotelier giants to open up in Yangon, The Max Novotel, was hosting an all-you-can eat dim sum brunch every Sunday. To help us get started, Chef Raymond and his team laid out a few items on the table beginning with barbeque pork buns, fried prawn dumplings, vegetarian rolls and siew mai, a steamed pork dumpling topped with fish roe – one of the dim sum all stars. There are about 14 choices of dim sum on the menu all up, plus a few specials that differ from week to week. On this occasion, we were treated to an egg custard bun served hot – the outside casing was a delicious chewy texture and the interior, a bursting yellow viscous of sweet and salty custard guaranteed to expand your waistline. Another special that blew our taste buds into overdrive was the pork puffs, a sweet meat filled buttery pastry that melted on the tongue. Room for dessert is also a necessity. I opted for the mango pudding, an excellent way to finish off what turned out to be a rather heavy brunch. The mango puree was fresh and not overly sweet with a light texture that cleansed the palate perfectly. My only gripe is to ask that coffee and tea are included in the price. for most people arriving on a Sunday morning, it would be a nice consideration. Rating: 8.0. Ground Floor, 459 Pyay Road, Kamayut Tsp Opening Time: 11:30 am – 2:30 pm, Saturday | Phone: (+95)1/2305858 Cost: USD $29.00 ++ (Free Flow of Beverages)
