TEN GREAT BOOKS ABOUT MYANMAR AND WHERE TO FIND THEM The bookstores of Downtown Yangon are packed to the hilt with everything from modern day classics to works of historical importance. Literary critic, Greg Taylor unravels the great from the good to offer his top ten pick along with a guide on where to find the best book shops in Yangon. 1. THE TROUSER PEOPLE BY ANDREW MARSHAL Andrew Marshall’s powerful adventure story recounts the story of George Scott, the eccentric British explorer, photographer, adventurer, and later Colonial Administrator of Burma, who introduced the Empire's best game (soccer!) to Burmese natives and to the forbidden Wa state of head-hunters, who were similarly enthusiastic about it. George Scott’s journey is contrasted by Marshall's own, taking the same dangerous path one hundred years later in a country now devastated by colonial incompetence and war. 2. THE GLASS PALACE BY AMITAV GHOSH This epic novel is set during the British invasion of 1885, when a poor boy is lifted up on the tides of political and social chaos that shaped Burma and India. Many believe this to be the finest novel written on the English in Burma. 3. THE BURMAN: HIS LIFE AND NOTIONS BY SIR GEORGE SCOTT Should a Sunday-born man marry a lady born on Wednesday? To bring luck, should a house be built on male, female or neuter foundation posts? George Scott served as frontier officer for three decades at the end of the 19th century, but his enduring legacy is as collector and sympathetic chronicler of the old ways in a country "where people are small and ghosts are big".

4. BURMESE DAYS: GEORGE ORWELL An examination of the debasing effect of empire on occupied and occupier, George Orwell’s novel follows John Flory, a timber-merchant in 1920s Burma (where Orwell himself served as an imperial policeman). Disillusioned by imperial life at the European Club, hope apparently arrives in the female form of Elizabeth Lackersteen. Meanwhile, the magistrate U Ko Phin sets out to smear Dr Veraswami, Flory’s best friend. 5. FROM THE LAND OF GREEN GHOSTS BY PASCAL KHOO THWE "Nearly every night I dream of the Shan State, of Mandalay, of the jungle. The landscapes of my dreams resemble real ones, yet they shift like images on silver screens …" Pascal Khoo Thwe's mesmerising biography stretches from his grandmother's creation stories to civil war and a chance conversation about James Joyce that leads to a new life in Britain. A minor masterpiece. 6. ROAD TO RANGOON BY LUCY CRUICKSHANKS Set in in 1980s Burma, Road to Rangoon follows the travails of Thuza, a ruby smuggler from the north who encounters Michael Atwood, the son of the British ambassador who is trapped between sides fighting a bitter civil war. For Than, an ambitious military officer, exploiting those caught up in the war offers an opportunity for promotion and distinction. But as all three learn to their cost, in this exotic, enigmatic and savage country, everyone has a price. 7. FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND OTHER WRITINGS BY AUNG SAN SUU KYI In this collection of writings, which includes her Nobel peace prize speech, Aung San Suu Kyi shares the vision, hopes, principles and humanity that have sustained and continue to sustain her. 8. THE RIVER OF LOST FOOTSTEPS: A PERSONAL HISTORY OF BURMA BY THANT MYINT-U For 200 years, Thant Myint-U's forefathers served Burma's royalty. His grandfather rose to become UN secretary-general. This remarkable family story is woven into Burma's history in a work that is moving, lyrical, shocking – and essential for anyone wishing to understand the country emerging today. 9. BURMESE CHRONICLES BY GUY DELISLE How can a comic book convey the cruelty, injustice and absurdity of the SLORC years? Québécois Guy Delisle's enlightening and insightful graphic travelogue succeeds by disarming the reader, as we learn with him the truth about the struggle for survival under the generals. 10. BONES WILL CROW: 15 CONTEMPORARY BURMESE POETS The poems of Zeyar Lynn, one of Myanmar's most influential living bards are featured along with the works of 14 other uncensored writers in Bones Will Crow, a rare and impressive book of Myanmar poetry edited by Ko Ko Thett and James Byrne, poet-in-residence at Clare Hall, Cambridge.

review

Jana Mon Means Mon Food BY GEORGIA GRAHAM

‘Cultural hub, training provider….more than just a restaurant’ Tucked away off Shwedagon Road is this cute, no-frills eatery consisting of only half a dozen or so wooden tables. Although the restaurant is rather bare it comes to life with a burst of aromas and lively clatter from the kitchen. When I arrived the manager, Paing, introduced himself with a warm smile and explained how Jana Mon grew from a project called the Mon Club he’d started eight years ago at the British Council. The aim of the Club was to enhance Mon youth initiation in Yangon. The Mon Club went on to create a youth capacity training programme in Mon and Kayin State. The restaurant is an important way to gather funds to support the Club as well as providing training and opportunities to young Mon people, particularly women. The traditional Mon menu was surprisingly large for such a small establishment, but after inquiring about a number of dishes we found they were only available seasonally, something that must be considered a positive quality control. I was pre warned about the level of spice here so I mentioned to the waiter that we would like all the dishes a bit less spicy. The menu starts with an array of appetizers, four of which are different types of patties. We opted for the ‘Lemon Grass Pork Patties’, delicious, if a little dry, particularly as the sauce was too spicy to soak them into. We also went for the ‘Banana Flower Salad’, which was super zesty with a fantastic, crunchy texture. The ‘Fish Curry’ was creamy and zesty but the ‘Duck Country Style’ was a bit on the dry side with too much gristle. That said, their ‘Long Bean Salad’ was the perfect accompaniment to our meal, a fresh dish to cut through the spices. Jana Mon Ethnic Cuisine is ideal for those who live or work nearby, although its small capacity means a larger group would struggle to be accommodated and a fun dinner out would be dampened somewhat by its lack of atmosphere. Its close proximity to the Shwedagon Pagoda makes it a perfect place to take visiting friends for a unique, healthy, regional food experience. Finally, diners should be aware that this is a bring your own booze establishment with a beer shop next door. Jana Mon Ethnic Cuisine 114, Nandawon Street (off Yar Tar Shay Street), Bahan Township
