ROOT What is it?: Keen to try out exotic ethnic cuisine from a remote part of Myanmar? Located on Bo Myat Tun Road, ROOT is the first modern Wa restaurant and bar in Yangon, serving traditional Wa ethnic food with traditional cocktails made of Wa liquor. Atmosphere:Its décor exudes comfort. Wa elements have also been sporadically introduced into the space.The wall has been decorated with Wa instruments, bamboo frames with photos of Wa people from the region, along with twig-designed lamps and a bull’s head. On the chairs, colourful Wa fabric with a unique style of weaving is sewn onto the cushion covers. Recommendation: Dining is usually a group affair. Wa rice or moik is brown rice cooked in stew. It can be cooked in three styles; wet, medium, and dry, with your choice of additional vegetables or meat like pumpkin, chicken or beef. We start our meal with chicken salad (8,000 KS) for sharing. The meat is juicy and the dish is slightly spicy. They can also accede to your request should you want a spicier dish. Our highlight of the meal is the grilled fish(8,000KS). It is seasoned well with herbs and grilled to perfection. We have enjoyed the Wa green tea (2,200 KS). The leaves are organically grown in their hometown in the owner’s yard in Wa State. Wa liquor is a leader in the cocktails section. It is fermented millet that can be added/mixed with traditional cocktails. Other recommended drinks include the pure Wa liquor, Wa Tang Clan(7,000 KS), Wa Dream (7,000KS), and Wajito (6,000KS). Final thought: ROOT has done an excellent job in showing us their tradition and culture through their healthy and hygienic food, refreshing drinks, cosy atmosphere, a well-thought out decoration, and an attentive service. Café Amazon Coffee Greenery amid Busy Downtown New buildings are emerging almost every corner of downtown Yangon. Traffic is getting more congested these days. Green area this part of town is diminishing. Hidden toward the corner of the underground floor of the newly opened extravagant shopping mall “Sule Square” next to the five stars hotel Sule Shangri-La, we find the largest coffee shop franchise from Thailand “Café Amazon.” Café Amazon Myanmar has recently opened in December 2016. As the name indicates, Café Amazon aims to be your greenery comforting space. Decorated mostly with plants, green and brown color, the atmosphere is tranquil and pleasant. Coffee beans here are a mix of Arabica and Robusta from the hill-tribe region of Thailand. Signature drinks include Iced Latte Amazon, which gives a perfect blend of all main tastes—strong, creamy, but not too sweet, fresh milk or blueberry smoothie can be a choice for non-caffeine drinker. Staff is friendly and attentive. Always greet customers with smile. Apart from the coffee, the real highlight here is the exceptionally FAST WIFI that many are yearning for in a coffee shop. Prices are considered reasonable, ranging from 2,250 KS for a cup of hot espresso to around 4,000 KS for frappe drinks. Varieties of cake and bakery such as soft red velvet cake, white chocolate macchiato, dark chocolate cake, or cheesecake are available for you to match with your preferred cup of coffee.
